Worked on these since I was a kid 1976. High ring piston issues after 1977 caused many to blow up. Otherwise one of the best motors ever made . This one has early single power pack and choke. I was a salt water marine mechanic here on Long Island NY. These OMC years were awesome. I built many mercury 6 cylinder POS motors . I smiled when these OMC came in shop .. Many still running today in salt water. Power packs always failed . Yamaha took over in 1980s we became a dealer and never had electrical issues anymore. The 140 v4 has that bump in back thermostats hard to change . Overheat alarms saved these but VRO ruined many of them .

I know more about the 140 v4. After going through several coils I would not recommend testing for spsrk without either shorting all the other coils sparks to ground or disconnecting the signal. The reason why, is because the first spark which jumps the coil winding will create a carbon arc through the insulation which weakens it making future shorts likely resulting in a failed coil after a short time. Seems to me, its more of an issue with modern coils than the OEM too.

As a hobby, I work on small engines. Mostly single cylinder Briggs and Chinese Honda clone. I am very interested in outboards, especially their carburetors. You really should get a set of hollow ground screwdrivers or at least a set of hollow ground 1/4" hex bits. Much less chance of damaging brass jets or binding/fillister head screws.

@jackpatteeuw9244 Well, I have hollow ground drivers, but no way they are getting into most jets; with the float seat, they would work, except as they get larger, they get wider so it wouldn't work anyway.

Hi Brandon, do you plan on making a video about the thermostats on these V4s crossflows ? They are a pain in the butt to access. It would be interesting to see you do it. Thanks

Yikes, the ford emblem on the motor is bad karma!

I’m looking for advice. I wet sanded my evinrude hood, repainted it with Evinrude branded rattle can paint. 3 weeks later, I gently wet sanded the spray paint, wiped it down with denatured alcohol, and squirted rattle can Clear on it to help make it more durable… Well, the Clear wrinkled the paint.. Can you recommend anything? Thank you

@danstoops8501 try a different brand of clear, Or, don't apply clear?

Hi Brandon, what would cause the float setting to change? A poorly designed kit installed at one time? I don’t see how it could bend itself out of adjustment. Great video as usual
@BrandonsGarage12 күн бұрын
@tomreynolds5767 it doesn't, prior installer installed them like that.

invested alot of time working on these v4 motors that only resulted in failure. wish their was the same amount of yamaha 2stoke available.
@BrandonsGarage11 күн бұрын
@fishawk90 well they are becoming more popular; but compared to the number of OMC engines around the US, they could still be considered rare.
