Back in the early 1960's when I was about Griffin's age, my dad bought a 1958 Oldsmobile Fiesta station wagon. It was blue and white, with factory air conditioning, which was rare back then. It was our first car that had A/C, and I loved it. My dad called it the "chromemobile."

Wow. I've never seen a 58 olds wagon in person. I bet it was a sight to behold. A/C?! Y'all we're living large. One of the best parts of doing this is hearing stories like yours. I love it. Every one of these old cars meant something to someone. It's a treat when you get to hear about it. Thanks for watching.

The name of that paint from the factory is called Desert Glow. We call our car, the Pepto Bismol Special. Great Car! It belonged to my grandfather.

With internet, ebay and such, it's easier now to find parts for a 50's Olds than it was in the 1980's. In the '80's, the only sources were auto parts stores who just laughed whenever I would walk in and ask for a part (I didn't think it was funny)...or Hemmings Motor News, which was priced higher on parts back then than things are nowadays.

There is a specialty shop in Connecticut that I've gotten most things from. The cadillac is almost impossible to get anything for. I've been having to get real creative.
@jefftofte94192 жыл бұрын
Yeah, to add to the difficulty 58 is a one year only body style. the 371 engine was only made from 57 - 60 and several internal parts are only compatible between 57/58 and then 59/60. Fun times!

@@theotrmechanic3624 If you have the old part, or the OEM specs, you may be able to reverse engineer it and make a new part using a 3D printer. I had a 3D shop make a new vacuum part for me awhile back and showed it on a KZbin video ("SmartTech 3D Printing Created Unavailable Part...").

The paint on your Oldsmobubble is in really nice shape, especially if that is THEE original paint. I think you might have a low mileage specimen there. How many miles on it? That being the case, you might want to grease up your speedo cable being that it is "dancing around." If you are going to drive it, I strongly recommend installing a dual chamber master cylinder. Safety trumps originality. Also it's good that you cleaned the windows not only for safety's sake, but also to set a good example for your son. Outside of that, I like the chemistry you have with your kid!
@theotrmechanic36242 жыл бұрын
It shows around 65,000 miles. I'm believe that's original. The paint is 90% original, but has been touched up here and there. It'll be getting a full wash and wax soon. I appreciate you watching!

@@theotrmechanic3624 Don't blame you for the paint, I'd planned initially to ratrod the engine in my Edsel, have it running like a barn find, but so much work needed to be done and so much to be stripped I bought some period correct yellow engine paint to restore it to stock. Best laid plans, and all that! My old boy's just grumpy, its like you gotta argue 'I'm trying to help you!" with him to get bolts and parts taken off. Love the name Tina too, heck she's oozing character, gonna be a shame when she goes back to her owner. You ever consider buying one like her when she's gone?
