This is my brother plowing with my 1959 D17 Allis-Chalmers gas tractor. I think the plow is a model 53. The ground had been left alone for about 10 years and was pretty rough. Took a while to get the plow shined up and the depth set but it's working pretty well now. Lots of stones, broke the tips of the front and rear points later.

I had a D17, I loved that tractor. It had a homemade/aftermarket 3 point hitch on it. Not sure what it was, but I cleared a lot of land with a Bush Hog. The Power Director hand clutch was perfect for dropping it back into low speed or even neutral when hitting heavy brush and popping back into high for lighter grass. The 3 point setup lost the traction booster, so I didn't plow with it.

Brings back a lot of fun memories. I used to run a diesel D17 wide-front for my uncle when I was a teenager. Was ferrying grain wagons one day, and forgot to unlock the brakes on one trip. Didn't realize it until I noticed smoke starting to come out of the axle vents, lol! Didn't kill the brakes outright, but they did need to be replaced sooner than normal. Amazing how much power that diesel had, never even noticed the brakes were still locked. It pulled just like they weren't engaged.

Now, that's plowing. Years ago, I plowed a lot with a JD B and a two bottom David Bradley disc plow. We had a field with a lot of stumps and several bushes and the disc plow worked well cutting bushes and rolling over the stumps. Really looked forward to the ground drying up enough to start plowing in the spring. I like the WD and the D, nice sounding tractors and pulled really well.

I have the same set up. The reason the ground is turning over in ribbons is because of the sod. You want the dirt to be broken up normally but is hard to do is sod.Plus some moldboards are designed to always lay the soil over like that. But for the most part you want the soil broken up.The way it is will probably take an extra pass wiith the disc or field cultivator to get it ready to plant a crop.Great video !! Love plowing with my 59 17 and #82 plow.

Noooo Tim, the reason the ground is turning over in ribbons is because that's how a moldboard turns the soil. It stands the sod on its edge if it contains enough clay. A discplough will turn the sod totally upside down but it's rougher disking on the first pass.

This os the tractor I first learned how to operate when I was 14. My dad bought it for $1000 and traded a s10 to get it. He used it for years until a tree fell on it after a storm.

Thanks for the nice comments. I didn't do much. Just set the rear wheel width and make a few adjustments to the beaming screw and the lift are's to get the angles right. I have a 4 bottom Allis semi mounted snap coupler plow I want to try on the D17 yet. I uploaded a video this spring of my D14 pulling this 3 bottom plow. It did a very good job. It did have to work a little more in spots.

Thanks for viewing and the comments. That land hadn't been worked in probably 10 years but it is a sandy soil with spots of better soil here and there. There are stones. Whenever you see the plow "jump" it's because it's sliding over stones. Automatic reset plows are very popular around here. In fact I broke the tip of the point on this plow later.

The D17 pulls it pretty good. Only time it really snorts is going up hill or if a sudden change in soil type where the draft control doesn't respond quickly enough.

Plows normally aren't lifted with the pto. There are two arms sticking out the back of the tractor below the seat that lift the plow. There is a hydraulic cyinder inside the rear end that lifts the two arms on a rockshaft.

Our D17 is in good mechanical shape and only has about 2000-2100 hours. It had a new idea picker on it when my dad and I bought it around 10 years ago. It had the picker on it since new and had only been off once and that was to use it to go load up another picker. The tachometer cable broke at about 1900 hours. I use it to square bale with a NH 273 and kicker, although the D19 handles it better. I do have a 4 bottom Allis mounted plow but I'm not sure the D17 can pull it.

@whspioneer89 If the Traction Booster is set right and the engine is healthy you can easily pull a 4 bottm. I pull a 4x14 fully mounted in black soil with some blue clay in 2nd gear high range (5th gear) with a D17. I have taken it to plow days and been told that if they hadn't seen it they wouldn't have believed it. 720 JDs and 880 Olivers couldn't pull 3x16 in hard dry alfalfa field one year while I walked in 5th gear and 9 inches deep. Tractor is weighted to about 6,900#.

@tod3k I do have a 4 bottom Allis plow with hydraulic tail wheel that I could try on the D17. I'm leaning towards trying it this spring behind my D19 diesel. Although I don't think the turbo is working very well since it only dyno'd about 60HP 10 years ago when we bought it. My dad used to pull a 4 bottom plow with his D17 diesel and WD45 diesel tractors, but I prefer to not push my tractors to their limits.

thanks for viewing my video. To answer a few questions, the rear tires are the same size, I have no weights to add to the tractor and the rear tires don't have fluid in them. I hate rusted out rims. I'm sure I could pull my 4x14 tail wheel plow with this D17. I might try it this spring. My uncle picked up a newer model 3 bottom plow with tail wheel wheel and I bought it from him. Just have to get it, he's in IL, I'm in WI.

The first tractor I remember plowing with my dad was a Farmall H with an Allis 2 bottom pull type trip lift plow. It was the first tractor I plowed with. Next was a Nuffield 4/65 with a 3 bottom three point mounted Allis Plow. That one never worked right. It wouldn't fold the dirt over no matter how shallow or deep you plowed or how fast or slow you drove. Then we used a Farmall 706 diesel with a 5-14 IH semi-mounted plow and then a Ford 4-16 semi-mounted. Best was Long 1310DT with Oliver 6-18.

We need to go back and build simple dependable tractors like this again when a farmer could repair his own stuff and do it economicly!today every damned tractor made has lots of stuff on them they simply don't need ,junk the EPA insisted on that malfuntions more than it works and really doesn't help the environment all that much!Good simple engines can and have been made by caterpillar and outhers that worked ok and didn't polute anymore than this newer junk and they ran forever it seemed between breakdowns. How often I've seen trucks setting on the roadside smoking to high heavens during a dpf burnoff my own Cummins px8 did this it smoked so much it would piss off anyone nearby it did this about 3 times a week it took 45 minutes and 1/2 tank of fuel every time ,now I ask you how good is that for the environment??EPA is pushing companies to meet silly unattainable levels of emissions, sure they pass when new but down the road at 20 thosand miles aprox.they fail big time leaving the owner with a pile of junk no one is able to fix ,I know I had one I got my dpf deleated egr valve blocked off computer reflashed to do away with all this crap my milage went up five yes 5 mpg to my way of thinking less fuel burned eqauls less pollution!!
