If he has the heads redone with hardened valve seats he can run unleaded at full throttle without issue. The reason old engines require leaded fuel is that the valve seats are soft iron and the lead keeps them properly lubricated with the high temps of the high compression. Running unleaded in a high compression motor without hardened valve seats can lead to carbon buildup and detonation.
