Dear Rambling Around, that is a marvelous basic car. Please don't ever think of turning it into a V8 (either 3-speed or auto). It would be an unforgiveable sin! Not everyone was after a V8 and pushbutton in 1959, and this car is proof. Reminds me of my father's 1957 Chevy 210 pillared 4-door he drove in the mid 60's here in Sao Paulo, Brazil, when I was a teen learning to drive. A 6 cyl & 3-speed just like this one. Basic and good rational transport from A to B. He bought it second-hand and we had a very good time with it.

Beautiful car, love the 2 door full size cars. I was surprised by the flat head six cylinder engine to say the least. Back in the day I rode many miles in my neighbors 1956 New Yorker that had a 354 cubic inch hemi in it. The Coronet here is still a great looking example of how cars were made in the USA at that time, and I am sure there were other engine options as well. I looked it up, 59 was the last year of the flat head six, the slant six came out in 1960. Good choice on this one Jeff, Thanks !!
@RamblinAround5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the flathead surprised me too, especially in a '59. I'd have to swap a V8 in there if it were mine. Still a great looking car though. Thanks for checking it out my friend!

@@RamblinAround Yeah, one of the older Hemi's would be a nice substitution for the flat head six. Chrysler had been also putting L head sixes in the same year. Still a great car the way it is, be a great car show car with the engine that is in it.

Flathead six engines were used by AMC through 1965!,,,I also owned a 59 Rambler American, 3sp manual...that car was not as heavy as that huge Dodge...however, that flat six in the Rambler was only rated at 90hp!...I could barely keep up with VW Bugs coming off a light!...Good mpg though, 22/29mpg...and so smooth!

'59's are just *bizarre*! gotta love it for the style, whether good or bad, it had style for miles. Have seen so many with dual quads this or hemi that, so its great to see one how Grandpa would have driven it with the little flattie and the 3 on the tree. I believe this was the last year for the flathead...Ford and Chev had OHV I-6's for years so Mopar was really behind the times. although the flathead exhaust note is great. Thx for sharing this vid...so cool

Me too! My Dad owned repair garages from 55-94. I remember the 225 was installed in some late model 59's and became the base motor in 1960 clear into the early 80's before replacement with the Mitsubishi 4..... I believe this was Chrysler dumping the flathead into anything they could to rid themselves of this very expensive motor to produce. I looked up the 1/4 mile time for that huge car with that engine combination 20.6 seconds...... I'm assuming a 0-60 in 12-14 seconds!!!!! Holy crap what a slug, even for it's time. LOL!
@curbozer50064 жыл бұрын
I had a 59 Plymouth Savoy, 3spmanual, with that flathead!...the thing about flathead engines, they were so smooth...I could stand a nickel on edge, on the engine block, while running, and it would not fall over!...that flathead was used for many years, but in 1960, that great slant six showed up, and I believe that was the end of the flathead....I gotta admit, the flathead was simply not enough power to move that car quickly...the slant six was an improvement on that score.

Didn't the slant 6 come out in '60? But man, that flathead was a leftover of the 40's, I'm surprised they were still putting them in cars by then, I know they were still going in some of the trucks, but only ones being sold to government from what i heard. That car is a survivor though, cars of the period rusted out fast and chryslers had a reputation of being some of the worst for it.
