1959 Ford F-100 Update

I'm fixing an old '79 GMC "Heavy Half"up for my weekender camp/fish truck. All it really needs is the pinion gear bearing replaced, and the Carter carb rebuilt. Maybe some O.D. paint someday. Runs great, shifts great-no slippages. By the time I get done, I may have an $800 truck which includes original purchase price. No computers on this truck, and its paid for. Love it!

Big old truck sixes like the IH had a lot of power. Always liked the idea of leaving one side of the brakes put together for reference cause I got CRS syndrome. I was taught put shoe with shorter lining to front.

For those Ford stick on center caps just put another layer of two way tape or a blob of silicone will hold them on. I did this too I put VW stickers over top Ford hubcaps.

I've got a 59 with a fresh rebuilt 292. I'm debating on electric or manual fuel pump. I've got msd electronic ignition. 4 barrel intake. Painless wiring harness. Your videos help a lot. Thank you. I am kind sad you are selling it. It's a work in progress I wish I could watch more of. I did my brakes when I was 16. I'm 31 now and your videos bring back a lot of memories.

A lot of time is I'm on a outside feed, I take the life off at the pump and feel if it is pumping then quickly threed it back on and check the farthest line connected to the pump. I also run a wire up the line into the tank and twist it a bit to see if it carboned over there' I say this for the readers incase you forget to mention it as you've done these more times than I can count' Again another great video that show some one with minimum skill can take it to the next level with a friend or a motors manual and some scotch bright and a HVLP paint gun and have a classic in their yard. I love your videos Jonathan and am surprised that you don't have a week emd tv show as they are so popular now. I don't think there is much money in it but you have ten thousand subscribers and they wold watch... Hell, I would watch the reruns cause I constantly pick things up from you

You might try putting compressed air to the tank filler to prime the system and clear out the line. Just take the feed line off at the pump and the air pressure will force gas through the line to clear out the gunk. Just wrap a rag around an air nozzle to make a seal and pressurize the tank. Same trick works to siphon gas , just add a siphon hose next to the air hose, the back pressure will start a siphon. Just plug the vent, if any.

Some shade tree mechanic had a field day with this beauty. Make sure the pickup tube in the gas tank is not plugged. Fuel should show in the filter.

The truck is coming along great, engine sounds pretty good for sitting for 35 years! Good idea on the clear fuel filter between the tank and pump, I'll have to remember that one. Not surprised that the pump is bad seeing how long it sat though. The previous owner of my project truck also had to replace the fuel pump along with ignition and brakes to keep her on the road, currently needs a radiator next just like yours... seems like those are always the main things that need attention to get or keep any old vehicle running.

I was taught the same thing about doing brakes one side at a time. But ya gotta be careful with relying on the other side as a reference when you're new to working on drum brakes. If the previous owner put them together wrong, you could just be copying their mistakes. Doesn't hurt to check your manual or the internet just to be sure.

Try just getting some Ford Stickers and clear coat them into the cap. Hot glue should hold them caps in. Also welding a wire to the inside of the cap can also hold it. You should raffle this truck off to Subscribers for a $1 or something. I am waiting on the lbs swap van rat rod build.

Jonathan, before you go to the trouble of pulling the fuel pump down to rebuild it might be worth filling it with carburettor cleaner and letting it stand overnight. The one-way valves in the pump can get gummed up and stuck as the old fuel sitting in it breaks down and turns into varnish but the carb cleaner should break the gunk down and maybe free them up... For the centre caps on the wheels maybe getting some suitably-sized Ford stickers and stick them on to the centre caps after you've painted them and then lacquer over the top of them. The lacquer should stop them from peeling off for a good few years at least...

Pretty cool, in much better shape than you'd have thought. That was some jury rigging on that tranny install. Those Ford emblems are convex BUT if you carefully cut the Ford logo out it will lie flat then!

Also another source for those lug nuts is Costco. For under a buck you have it, a chromed lug nut. Yes you need a membership and go to the tire dept for help.

Since you are not going to keep the truck , have you ever tried that Lucas transmission treatment sealer and stop leak. It is good stuff. Really does work. Will soften and swell old seals and not hurt anything else.

James Sullivan As far as he has gone on this one, might as well do it right the first time. As you can see in the video, the leak had caused a streak on the under side of the floor board so it has been doing it for awhile. Mechanic in a bottle is a band aid at best, not a fix.

I did not see any streak nor on a truck that has been sitting for 35 years do I see how one could get there but I will get back to the Lucas sealer. It really does work. I have used it it is made for applications such as this where old seals have gotten hard from not being used. This is why I normally do not even bother to reply to things on the net because as soon as you do some guy in his mommy's basement wants to play gotcha! FYI Mr Gray I owned a service station for 30 years and worked for 3 automobile dealerships, I don't need any advice about mechanic in a bottle That is what set me off!

James Sullivan Mr. Gray is my dad. And the mechanic in a bottle wasn't pointed at you either. But why go through all the trouble of putting brand new brakes on all fours, but instead spend the money on a bottle of "hope it works" when a rear seal cost less and takes so little time to change out. Somebody can do something for 30 years and be doing it wrong too, not saying you are that guy.

Ok, if you have a mech. pump that has been sitting, sometimes it needs a little help. The check valves become dry, and will not seal. A trick is this- use a small amount of compressed air in the fuel tank to force the fuel up to the pump and through it, and out the discharge. Another way is to use the pcv connection on the carb hooked to the discharge of the pump while cranking the engine. (Not running). The engine vacuum will be enough to pull the fuel through the pump and wet the diaphram and check valves. (Just enough to pull the fuel through, clear hose helps here) Costs zero dollars to try.....

I had the same problem with that tank, turned out to be small pinholes rusted into the top of the pickup tube inside the tank. I couldn't get any suction. I ended up having to get another tank.

i had a 57 gmc with a good pump and if you ran it out of gas you had to pressurize the in cab tank a little to get it up the pickup tube and flowing again

I can't even find a decent quality manual fuel pump to buy. The pumps from the usual suspects all leak externally, and not at the fittings. One actually had the arm collapse and break. I was lucky it didn't fall down into my brand new timing chain. I now have emergency electric pumps all set up to put in place with alligator clip leads to the battery for both my vehicles, that's how unreliable to the manual pumps are now. I guess I'll try Rock Auto Parts next.

Dang, after seeing the fuel line to the carb was clogged, I was hoping the fuel pump would catch and pump fuel for ya. Is it normal to put a fuel filter down so low and near the ground hard to see and maybe catch a rock and break? Just asking, not second guessing cause I definitely don't know squat! Going to the next video hoping you got fuel from the tank to the carb.

Is a center cap really necessary? I don't put them on any of my wheels because people think that it's a step in the middle of your wheel. Love your 59' though, I had a 60' step a few years ago.
