That white knob on the back was for manually changing the channel if the automatic motor burns out, which ours did. The remote worked on sound, not light like today's TV's. Our dog would run in front of the set and the noise from his collar hit the frequency and changed the channel. '

We had the same exact TV (except it was a french provincial cabinet). In the back you can individually adjust fine tuning for each channel, so when you change channels with the remote, don't have to get up and fine tune at the TV itself. It had a nice sound with bass and treble controls,, with 3 way speakers on each side of the TV.

I got a circa 1970 Zenith color console. I had some heartbreak happen when I got it home. Apparently, somebody didn't put the socket all the way on the CRT before buttoning up the set in years past. I go to take the back off, it slips and hits the socket, the socket breaks the keyway off and the CRT goes to air. I later discover the blue screen and drive controls all the way up. I think the only green control was near all the way. It's not a space command set, but it has power tuning. I hope to track down a good CRT someday. With nothing to lose. I put the socket back on the pins and hit the top repeatedly with my fist. It's then that I realize what happened there. Mental note to self. Be careful when removing back panels.

RCA in their ads said you can turn the TV set completely off. What they do not say, that that the remote needed batteries.
@wurly11005 жыл бұрын
No batteries needed for this remote. Tuned metal rods in the remote control give a frequency sound that's picked up by the TV mic which sets off a relay to change channel etc.

These were the best sets of the time along with Motorola refusing to use printed circuit boards. The other makes with printed circuits had problems develop from cracked solder connections and deteriorating phenolic of the circuit boards themselves due to the heat from the tubes. Zenith really meant quality with the hand wired chassis. This would have been the top of the line set in 1959 as very few sets had remote control separate bass and treble controls and separate tweeters. I think the "400' was the best remote of the series that year.

Can i use othe type of media player instead of the wester media player you have?

Nice TV! Had I been alive in the market for a TV in 1959 however, I probably would have gone with a Color TV instead, though this would have made great backup TV for a bedroom or office area.

If you had plenty of money. They were very expensive. Also I believe there was still very little color programming at that time.

Would you ever consider selling this set for the right price?

Nah...This and the Zenith "Porthole" are favorites of ours and get used just about every day. I do know of a "French Provincial" style same model as this in PA. Might be available for sale.
