Man, this is good film. The boats and drivers, and the mystique of that era in hydroplane racing will never be matched again. There's a book out about Mira Slovak called "A Race to Freedom" by David D. Williams, and another about Bill Muncey by Stephen A. Garey that capture the awesome feel of this era of racing. Good stuff.

I remember a boat that was sponsored by Reynolds named "Hawaii Kai". Pink paint job. Watched it race on the Potomac River in the mid to later 50's. My dad would anchor our boat on the Virginia side of the river right next to National airport. I was a very young kid, but what thrills I remember to this day.

I was born in Seattle in 1957, I've got a picture of me @ 5 years old sitting in the Miss Thriftway in this video, I was wearing Bills helmet, picture was taken in 1962 in Muncie's shop, my dad worked next door at Drag fast, it was a company that made floor shifters and other race parts for cars, I think some of those shifter designs are Hurst shifters today. My dad was a friend of Bill's, Bill helped my dad get into racing, he started with the 280 class hydros, my dad set a course lap speed record of 100 mph just before he hit a sinker log and ripped the back of the boat out, his racing days were over. Fast forward to the late 90's and my dad found a 16 foot pickle fork hydro and we built a 350 chevy for it, took it to boat drags and raced against the ski boats, they didn't like a circle boat drag racing the straight line boats so we played with the boat more than race it, I got to take it for a few laps a couple times, it would do about 90-100 mph it was a blast. I was also a Bardahl fan, and many others. I can't remember all the boat race people I met, got to hang in the pits a few times, my dad worked for Bill doing some repair work on a pleasure boat they had, I remember helping sand the boat when I was about 8 years old. Muncie was friends with Chuck Lyford, Lyford flew p51 airplanes, I missed an opportunity to go for a ride in his plane when I was about 10 years old,, Chuck was giving someone else a ride and I was next, he blew an oil line and rides were done for the day, I've never flown. There's chuck Lyford videos here on youtube, check em out.
