Rare original TV Broadcast footage from the 1st Quarter of the 1960 Baltimore Colts vs. the San Francisco 49ers. This was the season that Niners Coach Red Hickey introduced the Shotgun Formation which was later popularized by the Dallas Cowboys and is now used by virtually every team in Pro Football.

Jim Holt Ah yes, the Dodger caper. I have a little more sympathy with Walter O'Malley's move though. He had wanted to build a new stadium right in the heart of Brooklyn, an urban renewal project in a very nasty part of town, but somehow he had some local politicians the wrong way and was denied the building permit based upon the city's wish to put a shopping centre there and stabilize the social climate ... or so they said. The Public Works head, Robert Moses, also refused to give him the permit to build a stadium. O'Malley wasn't even asking for any local money. Anyway, the combination of an aging stadium, an overwhelming financial and property deal offered by the city of Los Angeles, and a hint of a racially based decision, i.e., more Blacks now lived in Brooklyn than ever before and it seemed the MLB still fought that angle, offered Walter O'Malley a new start, but he could still claim honestly to have been a prime mover in shifting baseball racially and geographically to the new era. Now Mr. Irsay ...well, now that is a different story to be sure.

They were all announced sounding failrly tall: 6'1, -6'9 but their weights were so relatively small; 220-250, about 50 lbs less that today. I also noticed they looked heavier, but it seemed the loose fitting uniforms of the day added some weight. The tight fitting stuff of today streamline the players.
@alijes827
@alijes827 9 жыл бұрын
Mingus Pingus 6' 9" is tall in any generation to be sure. It's the 260 part that is probably the biggest cultural change. It seems our present day dependence upon genetically modified foods, high fructose corn syrups in almost everything, and sugars in many forms, and not to forget steroids, have made our general body weights excessively and needlessly high. In the athletic world there is also that every present awareness of performance enhancing drugs. I have an old 1971 NFL FOOTBALL magazine that lists rookie first round draft choice LB Isaiah Robertson of the Los Angeles Rams, as 'large' at 235 lbs. That same period also saw very respected Def. End Jim Marshall, Vikings, at 190 lbs. ... that would NEVER happen today ... by the end of his career, say '73 or so, he would succumb to his own age and advancing steroids in the monsters of 280+ set before him. However there still very large men: Buck Buchanan, Ben Davidson, that 6.9 guy for the early KC Chiefs AFL, one of the Black players not given his deserved chance in the racially divided NFL. Thanks for sharing friend.

Mingus Pingus The only player I can think of that was taller was Richard Sligh; who was part of the first Oakland Raider Super Bowl team and was the only 7-footer in the history of professional football (could definitely picture Sligh being sent in to block kicks)

@alijes827 9 жыл бұрын
HRTVFan2 I googled it up and yes, Richard Sigh appears as the tallest at 7 feet even, but it appears that his ability was not as good as his height - didn't last too long and never started. I remember Ben Davidson (Oakland) 6'8", Ed 'too tall' Jones (Dallas) 6'9", Ted Hendricks (Colts/Raiders) 6'7", but weighed 'only' 220 ... tall, lanky, strong as hell, big with a very strange sense of humour. John Ogden(Ravens) 6'9" and 345 is listed as one of the tallest and THE heaviest ... teammate Jared Gaither also 6'9", 340 massive people. That weight level is what marks the difference between the golden days of the NFL and modern times. To illustrate that size is not the only thing, witness Doug Flutie, all 5'10" of him goes down as one of the greatest to play the game in the NFL, CFL (Canadian Football), USFL, and not to mention winning the Heisman at Boston College.

What do you mean "'borrowed' his watch? Additionally anybody who knows anything about Balto. knows that game was not played in "Municipal Stadium" as the opening announcer indicated. That guy's way of speaking sounded anachronistic even for 1960.

Story goes that at some point after the Jets beat the Colts in the 1969 AFL - NFL Champions' Exhibition Game (Super Bowl III), Sample was running his mouth to his former teammates about how his Jets had won. Unitas was there listening and after Sample bragged on for a bit, Unitas turned to him and said, 'By the way Johnny, do you still have that watched you lifted from my locker?' lol...Sample apparently stopped talking. That's how the story goes anyway.

@kingbee1500

Think he meant the original Dallas Texans (1952 NFL only), a team so bad that they finished their season on the road. Baltimore did well as an AAFC city, but wasn't included in the 1950 merger with the NFL. The Texans' colors and records were sold to Baltimore businessmen, and the NFL agreed to bring them back as the Baltimore Colts, the same name as the AAFC team there earlier. Confused yet? It really went down that way. Fast forward to 1984...no, better stop!
@Dachshund

King Bee Actually, the AAFC Colts were included in the merger. Those Colts played only one season, finished 1-11, then threw in the towel on the eve of the 1951 NFL college draft.

efrem1 He definitely meant to say Cowboys, but this was their inaugural season as well as the AFL Texans and Soltau would have played against the '52 Dallas Texans. Definitely easy to be confused back then!

The Dallas Texans played just one NFL season in 1952, and because the franchise was so terrible and drew flies at the Cotton Bowl, it finished its season on the road and moved to Baltimore to become the Colts. Dallas had the newly-formed Cowboys in 1960; the Texans played in the new American Football League (AFL) that season. In 1963,despite winning the AFL Champion- ship, the Texans moved to Kansas City to become the Chiefs.

Re-enactment of the coin flip??
@allanohare7934
@allanohare7934 8 жыл бұрын
+Tony Wilkins That's how they used to do it back in the '50s and '60s. I'm not sure why, but the actual coin flip used to be held well before the game, during warmups. The refs would then "re-enact" the coin flip just before kickoff for the benefit of the fans and the TV viewers.

I recall this still going on in the 70s when I started watching football. From time to time they would mention this procedure of the coin flip having already been settled and I could hardly believe what I was hearing. I still don't understand why.
