Wikipedia states it was later owned by Ringo Starr and Englebert Humperdinck. It was then sold to developers who had it demolished. That put me in a melancholy mood.

I want it, I want it! This beautiful mansion! I'm glad this programme finished when it did - because IT finished ME off! What finally was TOO much for me, was the final shots of the MOSAIC bathtub, on which to be able to display that beautiful ornament/ ashtray/whatever! And it ISN'T MINE! Miss Mansfield, and Mr. Hargitay had really EXQUISITE taste. Someone, who only THOUGHT he did - Louis 14th couldn't compare!

_The violet piping, like a Neon tube, outlined the tops of the ugly, hump-backed hills and they were almost beautiful._ _But not even the soft wash of dusk could help the houses. Only dynamite would be of any use against the Mexican ranch houses, Samoan huts, Mediterranean villas, Egyptian and Japanese temples, Swiss chalets, Tudor cottages, and every possible combination of these styles that lined the slopes of the canyon._ _They were all of plaster, lath and paper. Steel, stone and brick curb a builder's fancy a little, forcing him to distribute his stresses and weights and to keep his corners plumb, but plaster and paper know no law, not even that of gravity._ _On the corner of La Huerta Road was a miniature Rhine castle with tarpaper turrets pierced for archers. Next to it was a little highly colored shack with domes and minarets out of the Arabian Nights. Both houses were comic. Their desire to startle was so eager and guileless._ _It is hard to laugh at the need for beauty and romance, no matter how tasteless, even horrible, the results of that need are. But it is easy to sigh. Few things are sadder than the truly monstrous._ - from _The Day of the Locust_ by Nathanael West

Lovely Jayne. I'm sure she had truly felt like she made it when she opened this home to the public. She also had an open bar for the press that was open for 8 hours a day, 7 days a week. She really enjoyed inviting the public into her life and sharing all she had. Sadly this house probably gave her more trouble than it was worth. Her contract was dropped by 20th Century Fox 5 years after its purchase and the house was a huge financial sinkhole. Since she wasn't getting her contract salary of $2500/week ($100k a month by today's standards), she couldn't be as selective of her roles in Hollywood and took pretty much any scrap that was thrown at her to make ends meet, which cheapened her image greatly. She was doing lowly bar and club shows towards the end. While some of the supper and dinner clubs paid well ($1500 a pop in some cases), she had to keep doing them night after night just to stay afloat, which left little time for focus on her acting career. The carpet in the bathroom though, that's a dumb idea. Never liked the idea of carpet in the bathroom, and in Jayne's case it was all over her walls and ceiling too. Bathrooms get humid and there's lots of water spilling in a bathroom, which is why they're usually tiled. I for the life of me can't understand why anyone would do that. But eh, to each their own.

She didn't lose her head, like most people believe. In fact, only the very top of her head was impacted during the collision with the truck. Her face and the rest of her body were left intact. What you see in most pictures of the car after the accident is her blonde wig on the dashboard, NOT her head or scalp.

I've seen the place in colour, and it overwhelms. However, seeing it in black and white, the non-architectural stuff is thoughtfully and carefully done. The patterns and textures found in her choices of textiles, surface finishes, etc., shows a very sensitive approach to creating depth and interest in layers beneath the color choice. That shagadelic bath room is something, but if you consider what that tub was made for and how much time and privacy was required, the ankle-twisting carpet on the walls was a practical option. Horrid looking, but practical.

We see certain features like the rounded doorways and other interesting aspects not done in buildings these days. Interesting the home had vacuum ports, I remember some older large homes that had those. These ports with piping to a central vacuum tank and pump so only need to grab a hose instead of an entire machine to vacuum the floor. That thick carpet must have been high maintenance. The craftsman work by Mickey is outstanding. Shame to think it no longer exists when replaced by a forgettable building or whatever.
@Kaboomboo
@Kaboomboo 11 ай бұрын
I think it's just an empty lot now. Some insight into the home: it was built in the 1920's and had a myriad of issues. According to Jayne's biographer, Raymond Strait, there were constant plumbing and electrical issues and cost $5k a month to maintain ($50k by today's standards). The home itself looked nice but it was a financial sinkhole and I think that's a fact that Ringo and Englebert discovered the hard way thus they sold. Having so many issues that even some of the highest earning celebrities couldn't overcome would make it a hard sell for future prospects and probably didn't seem practical to keep maintaining so it was torn down.
