Fall 1960, Laguna Seca. There used to be a hill after the start/finish line ( they bulldozed the hill away so now it is flat) and the Birdcage Maserati would fishtail a bit going 100 MPH or so cresting over that hill. Jay or his friend said it was the most advanced race car in 1960. However at that same race there was a green rear engine Lotus 19 driven by Sterling Moss. Sterling left every car in that race in the dust and took the win. Smoothest driving I have ever seen.

Saw this car run at Sebring in 1960 with Moss driving and he really put on a show. On one lap at the hairpin he slowed and asked a marshal for a Coke which he picked up on the next lap. At the Webster turn he would come through the second half in a full drift and adjust his goggles with both hands. BTW it was hard to hear but the owner kept mentioning the Maserati brothers. They were long gone from the company by then and had nothing to do with this car. Last fun fact: in the still photo at the factory Guarino Bertocchi, Maserati's head mechanic is sitting in the car.
@Urbie47 ай бұрын
My Mom and Dad were also at that 1960 race -- I *think*. I have a snapshot my Dad took of Moss driving the #23 up the front straight. I've been looking at photos from the 1960 and 1961 races -- in my Dad's photo, the 23 is painted further back, on the door, in front of the rear wheels. I've been looking at articles about Sebring each of those two years, and that photo appears to match the 1960 car -- in the 1961 car, the number is further forward, and the "CAMORADI" writing is behind it. My Dad's been gone for 14 years, though, so I can't ask him for sure which year it was! He said Moss was much smoother than the other drivers -- they'd all be squealing around the corner (that must have been Turn 17), but Moss just came around smooth as silk every time, no drama, no squealing tires.

When I was a young teenager my friend and I were at a race in Cumberland, Maryland and Roger Penske was driving a Bird Cage. He had problems with the car and needed help to push it back to the pits. He had no pit crew (hard to believe). My friend and I were available and close by so we helped him push the car back to the pits!
