I used to never care for these at first glance, but the closer I've looked at them the more I've come to appreciate their unique design. This example in this color is magnificent!🤩 I do love the Fords, so I would go with that first, but would pick this in the second. 😎

Sweet choices somebody always would ask me what is my favorite fins on a car before doing this episode it was 1959 cross country Rambler wagon was my favorite fin profile after doing this episode these are my favorite fins i’m not partial to the commode seat on the deck lid though it ruins the lines for me.. I can’t believe how rare these are I also can’t believe that knowing the steel issues Mopar had wonder why they decided to go to unibody I guess because everybody else was doing it?

When I was born, I came home from the hospital in a 1960 Plymouth. It was a two-door hardtop, and was white with a red roof. It was a gorgeous car. Plymouth wins both rounds for me. It’s like looking at an extremely bright light, and then you look away, and you can’t see anything else. After you look at that Plymouth, the Pontiac and the Ford and the Mercury just don’t cut through the glittering WOW-ness of it. 😂

The 1960 Fury did have a gorgeous interior. I don't recall ever seeing one in person. I remember the 1961 Fury vividly. A man at our church had one. In scenario #1, I would choose the Galaxie. In scenario #2, I would choose the Catalina. I'm a Ford guy, but the 1960 Mercs never did it for me ... and my mom had a 1960 Star Chief, so I've always been partial to that year of Pontiacs.

Nice Fury in my favorite color green . If you like the 60 Fury, beside Cold water's Fury, Charles Phoenix has a video of a beautiful white 60 Fury 4 door hardtop . Prefer the 59 dash. Cool commercial ad, great addition to the episode. Loved the Plymouth and Pontiac translucent steering wheels, think early 60 Dodges and Chrysler's had them also. First pick the 60 Plymouth, second 60 Pontiac.

Check out the whole play list of Cold water rebuilding the Fury from the time he pulled it out of a yard with no trunk floor and lots of under frame rust, to him splicing the Fury body on to a 60 Dodge Dart sedan floor pan and cowl, to the finished car. You will dig that one

Stunning car. My favorite year of Plymouth. Love all the chrome. Can do without the cross-ram set up. My favorite is the 4- door hardtop. I'll take the Plymouth in both scenarios.

Sweet choices the long tubes look really cool but they could be super finicky I got to drive a 60to Plymouth Savoy 413 max wage last year and that car could turn within an instant, when it hooks up and hooks up Great but in the same instance he could go from running completely awesome to running like a complete turd all within the same thought.. I was Jk Galleria‘s media guy last year and I took that out to go get pictures of it and I shut it off in front of the dealership and I could not get it started so I had to push it back inside the show room which was a quarter of mile away and that car was a really easy car to push if it happened in the Corvette I probably would’ve cried..Corvettes are really hard to push for some reason I also ran out of gas in a 409 bubble top Belair the car was really hard to push

Did a great job on a great looking Plymouth. The hi-way hi-fi was very unique. So were the swivel front seats. And that optional steering wheel is to die for. Check out Charles Phoenix. He loves Mopars from the late fities through the early sixties. He has several videos of the matnificant 1960 Plymouth Fury. WYR #1: Fury, then Galaxie then lastly Impala. WYR #2: Pontiac, then Fury and lastly Mercury. WOW how I remember these vehicles. While the Plymouth was simply gorgeous and its performance spectacular, its build quality lagged way behind Ford (which wasn't that great in 1960) and way, way, way behind GM, which were extremely solid vehicles. A co-worker of my dad bought a new Fury n 1960. Had so many body, trim and rattle issues he dumped it after 3 months and bought a used 1959 Olds 88.

I was seven years old in 1960 and I loved the Ford. I think I was the only person who liked them. I think they look great even today. The Fury I have never appreciated the design until you presented it here. Great effort and accomplishment by Plymouth.

60 Galaxy, we had the Impala it was great. I would like a hybrid of the 59 Fury exterior and the 60 interior. Gotta love that mid century modern - Jetsons look.

That commercial about the Plymouth being more durable than lasting longer than other cars is interesting. I bought my 1960 Plymouth Suburban Station Wagon in 1966 in used condition, obviously, and while it wasn't ragged out by any means, I paid a whole $150 for it. I bought it just before I went into the Air Force, and I drove it, and my new wife and daughter on the way, from Wisconsin all the way out to Edwards Air Force Base in California by the old Route 66. Then in late 1967 I drove it back by the northern route up through Utah and across the plains. I had to do some repairs on it along the way, but by and large it was perfect. It was big enough to hold both of us on the way out to California, along with all of our belongings. On the way back we put all of our belongings on the roof, and the baby's crib mattress in the back bolstering it with luggage, and the baby wrote all the way back to Wisconsin like that. Those are definitely different times. But I have no complaints about that old car. It served us well.

for a low-cost Car, the 1960 Plymouth had a lot of appeal. I never realized how Elligent it was until I seen Scott at Cold war Motors Do the restoration on his Car it is loaded with Stainless steel trim.

What I mint was Plymouth like Ford, and Chevy were the entry level cars, Plymouth was a lower level than a Dodge, just like a Chevy Was lower grade than a Pontiac! some people don't agree with this but The Manufacturers of these car advertised then as such in the 1950's and early 60's.

A real beautiful design...especially when compared to the 1961's. Her headlamps and the body work around them predict more outlandish Exner designs soon to come, like the '61 Imperial's. Engine bay is a work of art The toilet seat decoration on the rear deck doesn't seem to fit the rest of the car, but that was high style in the early 60's. WYR: 1 & 2 Plymouth!

This is the one I kind of regret not buying, In 68 or 69. I thought of buying a 60 plymouth conv, white with black top. For $100 or $150 with new motor mounts. 318 auto.I was driving a 60 chevy conv, with burnt valves. Later it moved me to a 64 chevy conv. with a smashed front end. After fixing it I drove it till I enter the service. The 60 plymouth was a strange design over the 59. It surprised me you like it. That one is like new.......... I like your dog he is cool..........

The '60 Galaxy for sure, and that red one specifically. When i was a kid the neighbor came home with a brand new '60 plymouth- It was the El Cheapo Extreme model, and boring medium metallic blue. I'll always remember my buddy Francis and I laughing at this whacky, bizarre-looking machine in his driveway. I don't think he kept it a year before he traded it for a used '58 chrysler. So much for the Plym! BTW, neither the ford or plymouth for '60 are generally regarded as good looking, well styled cars and the dealers were pretty upset with what they were expected to sell. Today, the plymouth doesn't look just so bad, but it took 63 years for that look to grow on me.

Love this car! My dream car! Exner excellence! I prefer the 2-door hardtop to the convertible, because I love Exner's curvy top design with the large rear glass area. Love the rear "sport deck" option, in spite of its being called "the toilet seat" by those who don't like it. It looks regal on the Imperial, Dodge and DeSoto also. The 1960 Plymouth had the largest tail fins in automotive history, and the most beautiful contours as well, right up there with the 1959-60 Cadillac and Dodge Polara and Matador, and the Chrysler and DeSoto models. The final year of the big fins would come with the beautiful 1961 Imperial. That 383-V8 Golden Commando engine is spectacular with the dual quads and the crossover Ram Air Induction system, as shown also in the 1960 Chrysler 300-F and DeSoto Adventurer, and the Dodge Polara. However, just one 4-barrel carb is enough for me, with gas prices being what they are. Love the push-button Torqueflite auto transmission which will really make that engine scream!

The average 1960 Plymouth Fury did not have nearly as much chrome trim as this obviously top-of-the-line example, nor as fancy seats. The 318 was probably the most common engine in these and the slant-6 was in some base models. The speedometer is interesting. It's a revolving drum behind the bezel which rotates as speed changes, giving the illusion of a red mph line indicator.

Beautiful restoration. In the latter 1960’s, my family had a used “plucked chicken” 1961 Fury coupe in red, complete with the glittery steering wheel. I was embarrassed to be seen in it. Now, it’s a coveted classic. Btw, your dog is a super cutie!

My uncle Mike bought a 1960 Plymouth wagon brand new. It had a 225 slant six and three on the tree. (I can vouch for the slant six, I saw it many times.) He lived in southern California and kept the car until the late 1990's. It had over 300k miles on the original engine. He said top speed was 65 mph, but the car was rock solid and hauled samples around for him (he was in sales) for four decades. Rock solid automobile. I have many memories.

I used to think of these later Exner designs as cartoonish but as I get older I've grown to appreciate the unique styling My choice would be the Ford Sunliner with the Fury a close second. I'm actually more partial to the '61 (finless) design. If you watch the final seasons of the series 'Peter Gunn' the '60 Fury drop top was his car...👍🏁

Great choices this is the end like I always had this analogy for Chrysler and the forward look 1955 through56. You are getting ready to go to the shindig ( huge party ) 1957-58 you get to the party and toss a couple back 1959-1960 partying like it’s 1999 ( remember Y2K ) 1961 I can’t feel my face when I’m with you, but I love it 1962-1963 Guinness book of world records level of hung over it was like what happened The backstory to all of that was Virgil Exner had a heart attack he already had the 1962 drawings done up they were to build a big car but there was rumors flying about Chevy making smaller cars which Ed Cole was talking about the Chevy two series Newburgh who is president of Chrysler overheard and Cole talking about the smaller Chevy‘s at a garden party and he panicked. He made Virgil Exner and his team redo the car and he only had a week to do it not only did Virgil Exner‘s team redesigned the car they had to make a clay model of it and final presentation piece in a week they did that in the car, and it flopped, consequently Virgil Exner got fired for it..

I think the 1955 and 56 cars were Exner's best looking designs that Plymouth probably had a restoration and better paint job/prep than any new Plymouth ever came with ! @@What.its.like.

Rust was an understatement…back in the day, it was said these rusted out while sitting on the lot. Scott at Cold War Motors did a salvation of a 1960 Fury hardtop…literally splicing the lower half of a Dodge Dart to the Fury to save it. Check it out here on KZbin!

This Fury has the "swivel" seats up front. That is the release lever on the side of the seat. The final year of that option (I think).

I’m not sure when they discontinued the swivel seats but I totally forgot when I was there that this car had that option I always do it it’s like it’s one of the stupid things that I try to remember but I was just in complete aww that I was in front of this thing.. these are such a hard car to find and I’ve been wanting to do one for a very long time and I’ve never seen one up close like this..

Ford had a 9 inch rear strong transmission but a big Block with hydraulic lifters rattling 😒.. Mopar was going into the muscle car Years Strong !!! I love these... my parents had a 60 Savoy wagon when l was a kid.. few options- V8, radio, automatic. I think my mom hated it becuase it didn't have power steering, so my dad installed a spinner ball to help her out 😊. Great video as always!

I never did like the styling of the '60 Plymouth, but I do like the dashboard and gauges much more than the '59. One other difference between the '59 and '60 Plymouth is in the outer door handles. The '59 had the crank door handles, whereas the '60 had flush door handles similar to what Chrysler already had since 1957. The taillights on the '60 Plymouth remind me of the '56. Although the Fury name was dis continued after 1978 the Gran fury name was used for a number of years after that. My cars of choice would be the 1960 Galaxie and Monterey.

WYR1: Chevrolet (love the jet motif on the rear fender, though the fins on the Plymouth are outrageously cool. Front of the Plymouth really looks like a Buick Invicta). WYR2: Plymouth. Got to say I like everything about the '59 better, with the exception of the fins on the '60. Dash on the '59 and '60 remind me of a toy I had as a little guy - all sorts of bling, lights, horn, buttons... The gas cap behind the license was a feature of tons of cars into the '70s. When I worked at a gas station in the late '70s, Illinois still had you replace the plate every year, so the plates were very flimsy. Most were all bent up from grabbing them to access the gas cap.

For WYR, this is a tough one for the first scenario. So I'll cop out and choose all three. The second one I'll take the Pontiac Catalina....I always liked the bold styling of that year. This is a very nicely-kept car...was it restored? I think the 1960 model was more attractive that the '59, and don't get me started on the '61! I was never a fan of the toilet seat on the trunk or the placement of the rear view mirror, but I really like the wheel well treatment, especially the front. It made it look like a more expensive car. And thank you for that commercial in the middle.

You have good taste. Like I said I still regret not buying a 60 plymouth. It is not pretty , strange but interesting. If it had been a 57, 58 or 59 I would have grabbed it. The 64 chevy was my best choice easy to fix in fact fun to fix and second hand parts were every where. 283 is fun to overhaul. Then again later I had a 73 charger I up graded a 318 to a 360 high performance. It was fun too........ Keep putting the dog on he is cool.

WYR 1: None, but would sway towards the Ford - WYR 2: 60 Pontiac. Love the color on this 60 Plymouth and interior, nice restoration, don't care for the dash. Personally I prefer the 59 Plymouth.

The condition of that car is amazing. It's a heck of a restoration, and probably a restoration of a car that was such low mileage that it didn't need restoring. To confirm that, I was looking for the mileage reading in the odometer - but - danged if I could spot the odometer! Can you see it anywhere Jay? On the 'would you prefer', I don't usually weigh in, but this time, I find the styling of the 60 Chevs just too good to pass up.

Exner was running out of (good) ideas by this point, but he kept trying stuff out - especially on the rear end. The headlight sheet metal workout sort of presages the 63 Chrysler treatment (Ex was gone, but that bit was a holdover) Never a particular fan of the 60, but I will say they look better in person; maybe because they are so arresting. Weird dash - that little pedestal - GM did this on The BOP compacts and Cadillac has a (somewhat) similarly disjointed affiar on the 86-91 Seville. The Fury nameplate this year was cool, however.That huge rear window show in the 59/60 comparison was the 'Sky-Hi' option, which would bake back seat passengers. This is a nice restoration. WYR: 1 - 60 Impala - cause Mom had one new / 2 - 60 Fury because it was better equipped than the other two and arguably more roadable than the others.

Hi Jay! That is a PRISTINE Plymouth!! The color is NICE! The interior is AWESOME! The styling. . .well, I like the front end ok, but those fins are TOO big! NEVER liked those Bird Bath things on the trunk of those cars. Looks tacky to me. Either you have a rear mounted spare that shows or you DON'T. I kind of wish that V.E. had done the rear end of the Plymouth more akin to the 1960 Dodge. I kind of like that "jet tube" with a smaller fin on top. The Dodge has a kind of ugly grill and the Plymouth a pretty nice one. Now the engine! Those cross-ram MOPARS had the sweetest looking induction system on any American car at that time!! Might want to pull a small gas tanker behind one, though, if you are going on a road trip!! You know, despite the fins and the bird bath, I would probably buy that car too! But, WYR#1 Galaxie all the way. I'm weird, I guess, I like the styling of the 1960 Galaxie! My Dad worked at the local Ford Company when those came out, and he and the other guys at the dealership, didn't like that one too much at the time. WYR#2 Catalina! Another 1960 design I really like!

WYR #1: The 1960 Fury is my 1st choice, the 1960 Ford 2nd choice. To me, the 1960 Chevy was just a plain Jane, very pedestrian automobile.

This is a exceptionally nice furry, it’s amazing a guy had one he generally kept tarped in his driveway that we walked pass every day on our way to and from jr high school it was some kinda special model as the emblem on the tail fins called it out as some kinda of special model not just a furry I think it said golden or sport the amazing thing was the was 1976-77 and me and my buddies used to laugh at the fact he spent more on the tarp than the car would ever be worth lol 😂 from what we could tell it was a 1960 and the car was in very good condition , but nothing like this one . As far the would you rather I’m going to have to go with the 1960 furry and the mercury, I think that year of mercury was special in my eyes maybe just because I’ve got a soft spot for mercury’s and that model seems like it’s a foot longer and lower than the rest

I met a guy who had a bunch of Mopar wagons he was into the whole fin era it was one of those deals he was going to let me go and do some of his cars but anytime that we would get a time together he’d call me hours before supposed to go over there or you can’t come today so I just kind of gave up on him which kind of sucks because he has some stellar stuff.. but neither here nor there Thank you so much for the story great choices =)

The- yeah it’s crazy to think how taste and appreciation changes as time goes buy nobody wanted anything with fins but could you blame us when we could buy a sweat 69 mach 1 4 speed 428 scj for under 2k or a 67-68 Camaro for $1200-1500 every day I bought a convertible 68 firebird 400 4 speed in 1980 for $1k and it ran great. My first car was a 1962 mercury meteor s 33 four speed in a cream white with blue bucket seat interior and console, I paid $200 for it and it smoked so I put a 64 289 k code engine out of a falcon sprint it was the same engine as the k code mustang just advertised at a Lowe horsepower as not to upstage the mustang, I drove it a couple of years and saved $2 k for a 67 cougar XR7 in gold with a black vinyl top 4 speed and saddle brown leather interior and the high performance 390 gt package

As an animation buff, I'm curious who did the animation at the beginning of the Plymouth ad. Possibly UPA. It has a very mid-century modern look to it. I also wonder who did the singing. By the way I love the car. Virgil Exner designed the big Chryslers from 1955 thru 1964, but I really think that he hit is stride from 1957 to 1960. I know that the round feature on the trunk lid is not to everyone's taste, but please don't call it a toilet seat! 😀

I really like that commercial there was other commercials but I could not find a commercial with a convertible I take that back I found one with a convertible but somebody put their stupid name on it and they don’t own the rights to the video and it really pisses me off when people do that.. because nobody else can use it once they do that I mean you can their name will just be on there and I thought about using somebody’s thing that had their insignia on it and say this guy did it wasn’t around making videos I don’t think.. rang over lol

About 8:50 I guess that 383 ran out of RPM at 125 miles per hour rather than power -- if it had another (overdrive?) gear it could have gone faster? Unbelievable around that time (don't know the exact year) my mother's sister and husband had a huge station wagon,might have been Plymouth,with just a 225 six and a 3 speed gearshift,it was quite scary when they had to stop on a steep uphill and had to get it moving with that little engine -- should have had a 4 speed with a granny gear like certain school bus and medium duty trucks had

I was a kid when these things rolled out, and 60 years later, I still find them abominable. In 1960, 61, and 62, Exner gave the world some of the ugliest cars ever intentionally produced. They would not be topped until the Pontiac Aztec. All of these Plymouths look like they were in a horrible accident then put back together by people who had never seen a car before. There are stories out there about how Plymouth's dealer meetings to introduce the 1962 models were met with gasps--much like the Aztec intro. Some dealers actually walked out. Some cars truly established their brands. The Shoebox Fords, the Tri-Five Chevies, the Wide-Track Pontiacs, the 1955 Coupe de Ville come to mind. Exner's final Plymouths actually destroyed the brand. Plymouth would never be #3 in sales again, falling behind Pontiac, Olds, and even Buick.

All that said, it's unfortunate because a 318 with Torqueflite was an outstanding powertrain, and the cars handled quite well. As James Brown once said, "Beauty is only skin deep, but ugly is to the bone."

To be 100% fair Virgil Exner had a heart attack and then Ed Cole was at a garden party with Newburgh and they overheard that Chevy was making smaller cars but didn’t know that they were just making a smaller line of cars like the Chevy too hard so Newburgh made Exner redesign the cars and it was a total flop the proposed design did it look terrible I do agree that they get to be acquired taste past 60.. I was never a huge fan of the Plymouth valiant I always thought those things were really ugly but they are growing on me to the point that I would maybe buy one.. I like weird cars and this car takes pretty much all the boxes but they are super rare I am sure that they cost a fortune because they are so rare this is the only one that I’ve ever seen in my lifetime.. i’ve been to a lot of car shows this summer and I didn’t see any well I think there was one at Hershey but I couldn’t get anywhere near it it was too many people around it I really wanted to do it then this was an unplanned review I went to Jk Galleria to talk to one of the guys that works there and I saw this sitting in the corner and I was like where did John get that.. People that have these cars call these the fin car because of its fins =) I have never seen a 61 fury in the wild but they are very interesting looking on paper

It depends on what it is I was thinking about doing a video to rival his video there are peaks and valleys there always has been I mean these cars got real cheap in the 60s 70s they started getting valuable then took a dive again and started getting valuable took a dive again it fluctuates like the stock market just remember you’re always want to buy low sell high.. On a different note there are people myself included who are waiting for the market to Tank on some of these cars because in a lot of ways it’s become a rich person’s hobby which it shouldn’t be.. there are some cars that aren’t collectible even if they’re rare and then there’s some cars like Ferrari F 40 for example they made a lot of those for a limited production car that car is never going to become “cheap “.. sort of like a Duesenberg those cars are never going to become attainable

For WYR#1, I'll take the '60 Impala. I can sell it for way more than it's worth in Los Angeles. for #2, The Catalina. I prefer those lines and the I find the fins on the Plymouth to look rather awkward.

Hey Jey, I owned a 66 Fury Convertible in the 80’s ,I believe the 60 shown here is way Superior.The quality degraded a lot in 6 years,mine had a 318.The Dashes interior way worse,Styling Not as good .I owned mine for about 4 years,sold it when I bought my house.Noisy drive,Ride not good.Hard to find parts for ,Expensive to maintain ,I would not recommend buying one ,Think the 60 might have similar issues

1960, the year Chrysler lost it's ever loving mind when it came to tail fins. The ONLY saving's grace to MOPAR that year was ONLY the Dodge Polara, which, imho, were a set of the coolest looking fins ever. Chrysler, itself and Desoto were just ok. Plymouth and Imperial? Ugh! Oddly enough, in '61, Plymouth really pulled off a beauty, and Dodge became the homely sister no one would date. WYR: 1) Galaxie 2) Merc... SURPRISE! lmao But only in a ragtop, wasn't a fan of the hardtops.

Exner want the biggest fins that’s an episode that I really want to do is compare the imperial fins to a 59 Cadillac fins.. but that is a super tall order I have never seen those two cars at the same event I’ve never saw the imperial 1960 I have seen 59 Cadillacs.. but never a 60 imperial Cool choices =)

I do not like either dash, but the '60's is worse. I would go for the Ford and the Mercury. I have driven a '60 Plymouth Fury (and others)--the gimmicky steering wheel feels awkward and unnatural, the rear view mirror on the dash gets in the way of a clear view all around, in front and back, and is too handy for your hand to knock it out of position, and the pushbutton transmission selector is a pain. The buttons are fragile, and are difficult to repair, the selection is unintuitive, unlike with a lever, whose position can be felt without looking, and access to the dash is less handy than with a lever right next to the steering wheel. It all adds up to a real hassle when trying to rock forward and aft to get going in deep snow out of a parking spot, when you have to look forward and back, turn the wheel, and shift quickly and repeatedly from forward to reverse, while trying to keep from knocking the rear view mirror out of position. That will cure you of any fondness for the gimmicks. The car also could have used more sound deadening with the new unit construction, and came across as cheap and tinny compared to its recent predecessors . By the way, the slant six was indeed available in the '60 Plymouth, and gave excellent fuel mileage compared to the V8s, even with the automatic. The '60 Plymouth has retained a following because it represented the era (the '50s, actually), was followed by an ugly '61 and downsized '62s, and few people remember what it was like to live with. That record player played 16 2/3 rpm records, which supposedly were resistant to skipping from road bumps. I have no personal experience with it, but you can assume from its absence from later models (and competitors) that it was about as successful as the other gimmicks. But for years, phonographs had a 16 2/3 rpm setting--until it was later dropped. The '60 Plymouth looked like it was from the '50s--Ford ran ads making fun of Plymouth's ads for its 1957 model ("Suddenly it's 1960!") by saying with respect to the Plymouth "Suddenly it's 1957!"

NP. That rectangular steering wheel was available only on cars with power steering--they actually charged extra for it, when it made things far worse. You couldn't run it through your hands like a circular wheel--you had to see where the next section of wheel was coming up. The slow ratio, requiring lots of wheel movement, only made it worse. The whole car's controls were nonintuitive, fighting each other and demanding the driver's undivided attention. Even the space-age instrument panel was hard to take in at a glance. The whole ensemble was work to drive. @@What.its.like.

@@What.its.like. With all due respect, I thought those Pontiacs were not good looking either. I had an early '60s Pontiac, and whenever the engine was hot it wouldn't start, and the transmission was a hot mess to drive--it never wanted to downshift. It also had that daffy vacuum thing that was meant to not let the engine return to low idle until the vacuum built back up--to prevent the engine dying due to the transmission locking up so hard ... DID NOT LIKE owning that car.
