This 50 year old Gumball machine was sent to me by a subscriber. He asked if i could restore it for him. I didn't work well when i received it. I sealed the the black paint on the inside with a food save clear coat. When i was a kid i used to always have pennies in my pocket, just in case a found one of these old machines! Now you need a quarter to buy anything from a machine like this! Crazy. Thanks Edward for sending this old machine to me to get back into working order. RS
PS... I added a black sleeve over the the sliding handle.

That is amazing how you restored that old gumball machine to working order. I was wondering where you would put a lock, and now I saw a little padlock on there. It looks much better than before and it works like a charm too. Excellent work.

Is it missing a return spring? Btw, I searched the entire web for a book on restoring the ford gumball machines. Anyone want to work with me on creating such a book? If you know enough about all of them, and would prefer to do it yourself, please do!

Nice, though similar models I remember the handle would pull itself back into position. I also remember the handles jamming often. Probably why they fell out of favor.

Hi Rusty, I have one of these gumball machines that my grandfather gave me about 8 years ago. Sadly he is no longer able to tell me anything about it and I need help getting it back into working order. Where did you get the globe and gasket? I ordered a new globe but mine won’t go on easily like yours. I’m not even sure if the machine works.
@RustyShepherd

All the parts were sent to me by the owner. I don’t remember where I got the gasket. I think I looked up gumball machine replacement parts online, and found one that fit the diameter of this one. I hope you get yours working soon! Thanks for watching, and the comment. ❤️

I remember those. They usually were mounted on a stand. I haven't seen one for ages, I think they don't make a profit these days, the gumball probably costs more than a penny to buy, even in bulk.

@tootall5559
@tootall5559 4 жыл бұрын
@@animeangel1983 they are still made here, but they farmed the job out. They're made mostly of zinc now. Oddly a private concern can make them for 1/2 cent each and make a profit, the government can't. The hundred dollar bill costs about 27 cents to print, but they can't even make a profit on that. The government took over the infamous Mustang Ranch in Nevada fora while, they figured the only way to get the money they were owed was to run it, so here they are selling booze and sex and still couldn't make a profit. The government can't turn a profit at anything. 80 percent of what they spend on any program is just wasted, and they don't even get good value for that remaining 20 percent. in 2010, (2020 figures not available yet) they could have given every man, woman, and child receiving any social benefits 40K each, and still only spent half the money they do adminstrating the programs that net families only less than 8K per year. Same with social secuirty and any other programs they spend way more on admin than benefits. By the way, now they're calling Social Security benefits... right, they're earned benefits, Social Security was supposed to be an insurance program that all workers were forced to pay into, and their employers matched those payments... we're owed it, it's not a gimme. It would be okay if the jerks in DC like Pelosi didn't steal the money for BS like the impeachment crap. Here she is trying to say the president is impeachable, while she steals the money from the people to do so... why do the idiots keep electing her? Nuff rant for now, careful, don't set me off on a good one.

OK, less, slightly mad an amusing, but, so, great job as always, should go without saying, RS, personally can't associate lime green with anything edible but that's just me. I was thinking, though, that a gumball machine is a perfect example of a thing where it's function is not at all obvious. So, one might ask the question: "What does this gumball machine do?" And another might answer: "It dispenses a gumball each time you insert a penny and use the lever." And that's completely true, except, throwing together some arbitrary figures to illustrate... Let us say the machine holds one hundred gumballs. Let us say that it sells one gumball for every penny. Let us say, further, that the gumball machine owner can purchase gumballs in bulk, where they get two gumballs per penny. Each gumball sold, therefore, earns the owner half of a penny. All good so far? But let us also say that the gumball machine costs one hundred dollars. If so, then in order to pay off the machine, the owner must sell twenty thousand gumballs. That's a lot of gumballs. It's not impossible by any means, but, what if the owner, instead of buying the gumball machine opts to simply sell gumballs, one for a penny. Now the owner is making money from gumball sales immediately. So, if one assumes that the buyer does not care whether their gumball comes from the machine or from a jar, one must conclude that the gumball machine's purpose is not to sell gumballs. Perhaps, then the gumball machine is a loss-leader, a very expensive way to sell gumballs that pays for itself by bringing you into a store where you are likely to then purchase other, more profitable goods. Perhaps some of that is true. In which case the purpose of a gumball machine is to sell everything that is NOT a gumball. It does, though, save the owner from having to conduct the sale, but this seems a very expensive way to save very small amounts of effort. However, one could suggest that what the gumball machine is really selling is the experience of using the gumball machine, and the gumball itself is an ancillary bonus. In effect, the gumball machine isn't for selling gumballs but is actually an arcade machine. The experience, for a child, of inserting the penny, cranking the lever in two directions, trying to work out the hidden mechanisms, and then being rewarded with an edible point forms a game of sorts. Maybe that's why they appeal to people odl enough to remember them fondly, and those with a touch of machinophilia, but are seen as kinda vulgar and crass to many. Or maybe I'm going completely loopy in my cell, and am just trying to lose some time typing out musing on pointless hosspoop. Either way, is there really a need to padlock the thing when the entire unit would fit in a plastic bag? ;-) Also, dog treats, just a thought.
