What a joy to listen and watch an intelligent conversation about something. Great comment at the end about the purpose of the theatre.

Have to say, the BBC were masters of producing the best quality kinoscope back in the day - at first glance, you'd think this was shot on film. Keep up the great work archiving TV history!

He directed one of Ian McKellen's first professional Shakespeare plays and helped him a great deal. There's a nice tribute on McKellen's website.

I love the concept of producing Peter Pan as a gothic drama with Freudian undertones.

The camera framings are way too close for my liking even with these two marvelously chiseled faces and the fine lighting. But it is a pleasure to listen to two knowledgeable adults discuss drama. This interview was recorded in 1960. These days these kinds of theater bits on American TV are a repetitive plague. I was a big fan of the original Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis where I live. It has been replaced here by a new Guthrie Theater building. The theater craft remains top-shelf but its home (with several stages) is an eyesore.
