This is a very beautiful clock, Dan! It has an unmistakable mid century design, these are some of my favourite designs of clocks. The mechanism is fantastic, early battery operated clocks are really cool even if they're obsolete thanks to crystals and other electronics. Your improvised method of lubrication is really fascinating. I personally use a syringe with no sharp point, and it's filled with a synthetic clock oil, very light weight like you said. I think it'd be very interesting to see a video of you explaining an electromechanical clock with a transistor(s) and a magnetically impulsed balance wheel and maybe also troubleshooting one that doesn't work! I love how well you explain things in a way that I can understand, even though I'm not well versed on electronics.

Niice. I have a similar clock (Kienzle) which has run continuously (except for battery changes) since 1967. A Duracell 'D' lasts for several years. Your content is always interesting, ham radio, charger teardowns, repairs.... like it all.

The one you repaired is an "electric wind" mechanism, while the other type with the single transistor is an "electric pendulum" (and works similar to those pendulus ornaments with swinging features).

German here, GDR German, never seen this thing, and I use to go on flea markets. But I know the mechanism from the Russian clock, it was widely used in GDR products, pretty the same, but cheaper with some more plastics. It came even with alarm function, it's in the "Robotron Lausitz 2011" for example. This mechanism is electronic, calling the winding function "electronic" is an overstatement. When it comes to Ruhla, a design classic is the "ruhla Sumatic", basically a wrist watch with an electric buzzer for traveling. Ruhla is famous for wrist watches.

Interesting clock. A similar wind mechanism was used in 6- and 12-Volt car clocks in the 1950's/ 60's.

In the UK, we had many mains powered clocks powered simply by a 2-pole synchronous motor. Early ones had to be started manually, or would run backwards! Later ones had a one-way mechanism built in, so they would always start running forwards. In large buildings such as hospitals, factories or schools, there would often be a master clock using a pendulum to keep time, sending regular pulses to slave clocks in each room and maybe with a bank of cam switches controlling bells to sound shift changes or ends of lessons. Of course, every manufacturer had their own, incompatible system .....

I had an app on my phone that listened to the ticking of the clock and said if it was running slow or fast and by how mutch and how to adjust it. I adjusted my old watches preattly nicely.

There was also the resonator clocks, they used either a tuning fork or another resonator to keep time. Unusually that resonator drove the gear train directly, either through an indexing mechanism or a magnetic escapement, although sometimes it is used to provide an AC signal for a synchronous motor to run off of. Some quartz clocks also use that principle to power a synchronous motor instead of a stepper motor. There was also the AC powered clocks that also used a synchronous motor, but those weren't battery powered.

"Like a speeding, runaway train nobody can stop". I've been yelled at and even threatened with physical harm for saying that, so it's nice to hear someone else say it :). I've never seen this type of clock and it's quite interesting as it shows the typical evolution of technology. The most practical timekeeping method at the time was a spring, so the obvious path to electrification was to add a self-winding mechanism. I enjoy mechanical clocks, so thank you for sharing this hybrid.

Nice, I liked this repair of the clock. I also quite like clocks, both modern and older, this type really shares quite a lot with the older wind up style clocks. I wonder what the battery life would be with a D cell, compared to that of a pair of AAs? (And I would use up that nasty TESCO Zinc Chloride battery first, then switch to better quality ones.) Can't wait for the video of the other clocks. :)

Nice classic clock! It's interesting to see the evolution of the electronic clocks especially those operating off of the battery - this clock is as simple as you'd like, no electronics, except for the solenoid to wind it back up.

interestingly it clearly wasnt a cheaply made clock, the jewels and pallet jewels proved that. I have a Kundo electronic from 1966 which has no jewels.

@@juslitor Yep, those bearings are amazingly expensive. The ceramic bearings like this one (the ruby pallets) is sought after for very low friction especially with tiny gears while also being relatively resistant to scratching, and of course they are still used in both mechanical and electronic watches that cost a whole lot.

The UMF factory, along with watches and clocks, also built precision machinery- die filers, saws, shapers and universal milling machines. One rather unique machine is a shaper designed for making punches which has a special mechanism to produce the draft taper and radius. The only fault I can really see with this clock mechanism is the lack of a maintaining power, but then the action of the rewinding mechanism is fast enough that it really doesn't matter.

The solenoid type, my parents had one in the '70s. Every 2 minutes or so, CLACK, as the solenoid fired and reloaded the spring. It used a linear spring rather than a coil spring.

Very interesting. I had an old 1965 Vauxhall Cresta PB, which had a clock above the internal mirror, set into the roof. It was a German made 'Kienzle'. It always fascinated me because you could hear it tick. So I knew it was clock work. Every few minutes, you could hear it buzz, as it wound up. I guess they used a motor instead of a solenoid to wind it.

I think it was made in east Germany since that triangle with the 1 inside it was a mark for good quality and good for export. There's also one with a 2 in it and the tip of the triangle facing to the bottom which meant worse quality but okay for use. Sorry for my bad English

Although they're not battery powered, don't forget Telechron clocks, which use the AC frequency to control the time. Also, I made a mechanism like this as an auto winder for my Lego clock, but it uses a motor instead of a coil.

Hi, I've modified a FS1000A rf transmitter to output a signal as 868.35 mhz instead of 433.92 (just swapped the cristal) It works some of the time, and i've gotten my garage openned with it but the reliability is not on point. Seems to oscillate properly with some nice harmonics only when it wants to, or else I only get a weak signals dispersed on a big range of frequencies. What components should I change in the circuit to get it to oscillate correctly ?
