Seeing that Cheetah at the very end made me have flashbacks!

I was born and raised in Riverside, no far from Mt. Rubidoux. I remember going to the races with my Dad and brother back then. There was just something about it all - the roar of the engines, the sound of them speeding past, the smells, the crowd. It all came together. I’m 50 plus years older now and my family is long gone. But I do have some terrific memories of those days. I left Riverside in 1978 and live up by the Canadian border, a mile or two on the US side.

Spent many week ends at Riverside as a spectator of Trans Am, Winston West, Can Am, SCCA etc. in 60's to 80's. Great track, lots of fun and good people

If this was 1964 your dad won this race. I own a red Austin healey that was in this race number 163 driven by Bob Darby. Not sure if I saw it in there though.

We had an Ohnstads Foreign Auto Wrecking in Fresno, California also. My friend almost pulled the trigger for a Lotus twin-cam and trans. for his '68 Ford Cortina that was sitting in front of the place back in '72.

Classic track, classic racing. Nothing like it is now, all big money and factory support. And real estate put an end to one of the best tracks in the world.

Love the vintage rac8ng clips. One small mistake or one little broken part and either your life changed forever or you were dead. Crazy.

It's all gone now, where brave men and women raced. A shopping mall in it's place. Now only memories placed. Good bye, Riverside. Rest in peace.

Good video, I like to run them at .75 speed so you can get longer view time of each car.. Was in a sports car club at Valley College 66-68 and they were the SCCA Grid Crew for many races so we lined up the cars at the start of each Class and then stayed right there until next Class ..Mini Coopers and Fiat Abarths were amazing to watch and hear the Buzz of a pack of them going by as they never let off the gas or did much braking..Of course A Class Cobras and Vettes were great and then Group 7 took the Top. 180-200 down the back stretch then brake for big turn..All the big name drivers were there at this fine course with plenty of turns of all types and elevation changes...Got to drive it once after an All Night Rally with my TR4...

These cars seemed to be much slower than I would think. Then I noticed the corner worker running in slow-motion. The film was transfered at the wrong frame-rate. Other than taht this is a nice look back.

@bearloon Yes the big sports cars are definitely 1964. There are various giveaways e.g. You can see Bruce McLaren's McLaren Elva, which first appeared in the latter stages of the '64 season, but no Lola 70s - they didn't appear until 1965. We also see the works King Cobras in the race, and these were withdrawn at the end of 1964.

At this point in the safety game racers seemed to argue with SCCA about anything that added weight to their cars. At first, tubular bed ends were used without any bracing because drivers wanted an advantage and were willing to sacrifice their safety for the hope of a trophy. No one realized that if they went all the way with a rollcage that it would enhance their cornering ability due to frame strengthening. Pity the old grand Prix drivers from around WW II did not have any safety devices.

Back then, roll bars were considered unmanly. So were full face helmets, because you couldn't smoke your Lucky Strikes with one on.
