That Matador was a sharp car on the track. I may be the only one who thinks that (at least in my family). Thanks for the video.

People can make fun of the Matador in street trim all they want, but I agree with you. Classic AMC paint scheme carried over from Trans Am made it look fantastic.

I was there as a 5-year-old kid with my dad. I love Riverside! We would go there for all the NASCAR, IMSA, Champ Car/Indy car, CanAm, and IROC races! Great great memories as a kid. One time I took my little BMX bike and at the end of the race, while my dad was talking to drivers in the pits, I rode the entire long course, all 3.3 miles. The turn 6 hill was steep for a 10 yr old. But I was smiling ear to ear! The loooong downhill back straight was awesome. Took me about 30 mins. Brings a tear.

I only got to get out there the last few years it was open, for an Alfa Romeo club day, a WERA motorcycle event, and the last ever NASCAR event there won by Rusty Wallace I think. What a great track, for sure.

0:29. That Olympia Dodge Charger contested at the 1976 Le Mans 24 hours & is still racing at the Historic Le Mans races along with a 1975 Ford Gran Torino & a Chevy Monza!

Thank you so much for posting this!! I was there (the first Sunday), 7 1/2 years old. Riverside was an absolute jewel!! The cars were so much louder than today. I remember when we went to Riverside, my ears would be ringing all day at school on Monday. There was nothing like this spectacle. The best road course ever created.

I was there in 1993 but the racetrack was defunct we walked a lap that night with a case of beer, they cut 50 yard pieces of the track sos people wouldnt race it, they left the high banks thats when I realized where I was, then the grandstand still had most of the name. RIVERSIDE INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY.

They say the 70's was the malaise era of automobile styling. Well they sure made for the best looking stock cars after the aero cars were chased off the scene.

I love that fans (past, present, and future) enjoy these wonderful old races when NASCAR was a pure Motorsports racing and when it was evolving by popularity. However, the only problem I have about NASCAR back then was less road course races. Personally, I wish NASCAR had a lot of road courses back then like this year and moving forward
@HODIUSDUDE4 жыл бұрын
It was a very different era. Domestic road racing was largely the domain of the SCCA during that time. The Trans-Am series filled that void for American Muscle cars on road courses. Sadly, very little footage of Trans-Am in that era exists. You can see some of it here kzbin.info/www/bejne/aGK1lGt3ndp1ibs NASCAR and USAC both had their ladder system fully rooted in the local dirt ovals. NASCAR's Modifed and Sportsman divisions were the path to Cup in the Southeast and USAC's Midgets and Sprints performed the same function in the Midwest. The progression from dirt ovals to paved speedways and "super-speedways" was not limited to drivers. Many tracks began as dirt ovals that were then paved and in some cases lengthened and paved. By the 1970's many of the owners and promoters of these facilities had long established relationships with Bill France (and Tony Hulman in USAC). Thanks for watching and your interest in the history of the sport.

Without having the camera technology as today, it looks like it was hard to film this. Not filling the stands like high speed ovals do, in my opinion, led to the demise of these races.

Great memories of RIR in the '70s and '80s. Saw the King hit the wall coming out of the esses at the Winston Western 500. Saw the great Mark Donoghue in the Sunoco Can-Am car. Took racing lessons in a Jim Russel Formula Ford in the '80s. There was no racetrack like RIR back in the day and there still isn't!

I do...I have the Car & Track coverage of the Phoenix 150 and an audio file from the Bobby Ball 150. I will be posting both in the future. I need to re-format the video (currently VOB file) and will post in the near future. I will work on cleaning the audio from the Bobby Ball race as well and get that posted.

Today (2023), NASCAR has a Cup series race in Southern California, the Los Angeles "400" on the oval track in Fontana. But the future of that race is uncertain. I heard that around twenty years ago, NASCAR had a street race in Los Angeles for one of their regional divisions. Might NASCAR replace the Los Angeles "400" with a Cup series race through the streets of Los Angeles?
