John just noticed , re polish the top of the thrust pin to be perfectly flat, the one you just installed,, it showed an indentation from being over tightened in the past. You still have a clutch problem , The oil you are using is making it stick, use only sewing machine oil !!!!! And clean off all that grease !!!! Sparingly is a word to be addeared to apply only a smidgin if you have to with a 1/8 inch water colour paint brush very lightly !!!!

Wasn't there a ch called SEEBURG ROCKS by a guy named Glen? I think he also was into RCA 45 players? I found RETROCHAD on fakebook, look up Rare Electronics and Audio Lab, he also has a web ch with archives: www.retroaudiolab.com/

Major progress John. I believe that jumping when you reject the record is 1 of 2 things... either the thrust plate needs that allen screw to be adjusted, or the unit goes into a seek mode to find out where it is on the Tormat Memory unit. not sure.. either way, you will nail it down !!!!! Really really good. - Ron

Ron, It is the clutch, my friend,...needs readjustment now that the thrust plate is back on. We'll get back to it after the current adjust mess is wrapped up. Regards, John

I know of an instance of a Seeburg SMC 1 that had a similar issue with the plate on top of its clutch. The carriage would move but in a jerky manner because of a missing top ball bearing but nonetheless,it would scan,properly play & return the records.
@mathewbailey6718
@mathewbailey6718 6 жыл бұрын
I just recently thought of something,Is the carriage sticking with the record magazine off? If not look at the Tormat strip & the contact block that moves along it. I'm thinking the contact block is binding on the Tormat in several places along it & causing the carriage to stick. The parts of the Tormat might be warped or bent or where the carriage is sticking, those parts of the Tormat might not be adequately lubricated. I had a similar issue with a Seeburg SPS2 mech in which the contact block that moves along the strip for the selection playing indicator was dirty & not properly lubed, causing the carriage to stick, plus parts parts of the selection indicator strip need cleaning,any warped or bent spots straightened & re-lubing.

John, remove the clutch unit, clean it completely with petrol to remove all signs of grease. After reassembly only use sewing machine oil on moving or contact points. Don't use grease at this stage until all adjustments are complete then only sparingly !!! .

Well- After you finish this one the next one will go much faster. Maybe that clutch is still not working right? I think the green (or blue) transparent records are easier to see through than the red ones are. There are so many critical adjustments on that mechanism that I don't see how anyone could service it without having a service manual like you have.

Do you think there could be an issue with that lower bearing on the clutch shaft assembly. Is it adjustable or gummy?
@joernone
@joernone 6 жыл бұрын
The lower bearing is clean and I haven't seen any adjustment for it, except for the downward pressure by the thrust plate allen screw adjustment. Regards, John

+joernone, +skycarl, You know something John, with that thrust plate clearance being only 0.002-in, what Carl said earlier about the room temp making a difference in the functionality, i.e. the "taverns aren't cold" theory, holds quite a bit more weight. I'd say this is one gal who doesn't like cold weather...

John, that "Polka reject" system also ejects anything "Babs-centric", remember to stand clear of the back of the machine, when it spits "Memories" out (at light speed).....

i would think so. so when the clutch comes up, dose it run the mechanism for the record and tone arm? and when the clutch comes down dose it drive the scan? also dose the motor change directions ? maybe the clutch is still messed up. John you have some incredible patients , i think i would have taken a sledgehammer to it. i would have walked away from it for a wile! Way to go John!!
@joernone
@joernone 6 жыл бұрын
The turntable is always turning as the carriage makes its way down the track driven by the clutch being engaged with the lower sprocke pint, but a record plays when the clutch moves to the middle, between its upper and lower positions. And you're right about the clutch needing re-adjustment. That'll come later. Regards, John

I have always wondered about that sparking of the contacts. Seems to me that it would most definitely pit the contacts. Also; I think the clutch plate surface looks to me like it has a deep scoring or scratch which you maybe able to remove (or make better) by a lite polish with something fine like crocus cloth..

John maybe you could cut a strip of soda can, or fold a layer of aluminum foil. Check it with a micrometer maybe you could get close to .002

Hi John i agree with the others that you will have to readjust the clutches. The roller is not staying in the scan notch on the cam, so the clutch is jumping out. The trip lever on the clutch side has a large spring which i think keeps the roller down in the notch. This video did not show the twisted spring on its location, this needs replacing anyway. On the front face another spring has come off its mounting point it mounts parallel to the other one. If you have a look this Thermionics video kzbin.info/www/bejne/ppaTaWZtgd2dfJo at about 8 minutes in you will see the springs and how it works

It is almost impossible to get a good working Seeburg clutch to skip. (decouple from rack the gear) On 33 RPM speed,the motor will stall be for the clutch to skips. At 45 RPM's the motor has almost double the torque. so I an not sure the you can stall it. An off the wall test is using the ends of 3 or 4 fingers, against the mechanism while it is in the scan mode and attempt to stop it. It should bend your fingers back until they heart. Now you have a good working clutch. I know, you don't have a the ASU1 Auto Speed Unit that plugs in to the Tomat receiver, to check out the clutch in 33 RPM mode.

That rigged grounding on the track might not be making good enough contact, and causing the jerking.

I doubt it, but it will be checked. In fact, I plan to disconnect that ground wire to see if a record will still be picked up. It'll make for a good experiment. Regards, John
