The 409 was a great engine but it had solid lifters meaning you had to adjust valves every 25-30k miles. I had a 65 Impala SS with that engine also. It was Red also but I had black vinyl interior with the bucket seats!!!Awesome car.❤❤❤❤

I grew up pretty poor. Never had a car until I came back from Vietnam in 66. I bought my first car with money I had saved. 1964 409 conver. white over black red interior. Had dual quads and 4sped. only had 20 thousand miles on it. I paid 1800 bucks fo it. It was a running SOB.

I bought a used '62 09 Impala SS in 1963; same motor and trans as this car. It already had 20,000 miles on it and was Nassau blue with the silver blue interior. Speeds in the gears were 65 in first, 85 in second and 105 in third with a 3.36 rear gear. Fourth gear would "bury" the speedometer. Not sure if there are many alive today that will understand that terminology. I bought mine in Chicago too and the big hangout place was a huge A&W near 95th and Cicero in Oak Lawn. We raced (for money) out in the Forest Preserve area on 107th street, which was really out in the country then. Good times!

I never saw a Biscayne or Bel Air with the "pillarless" hardtop. Every one I have ever seen had the door post. This must be a really, really rare car -- and I like it. Manual transmission, AM radio and (most likely) no power steering or brakes. Top it off with a vinyl bench seat, crank windows and no A/C. No ABS or traction control - which must have made driving on wet roads almost treacherous. This is an example of a fast, no-frills street fighter of a car that doesn't have a lot of "fluff" or extra weight to slow it down.

I thought “oh geez another granny cruise”, and damn if the old f’er doesn’t get right on it. Cool. Drive ‘em some like they were made to be driven. I miss my old 63 SS 327 Muncie. Oh, and Merle, the 409 is obviously a large engine and the dual quad version uses Carter carbs that are wider then they are long unlike Holleys. They don’t fill the manifold end to end. If you look at the start of the engine shots you see the front carb starting right behind the water neck. And look how huge that air cleaner housing is to cover those two carbs on the low profile manifold. Thanks Chuck and Marty.

Bored and balanced , Howards aluminum rods, Jahns power-slot pistons, Hurst competition plus shifter, Atlas Bucron tires for the street, front bumper off, 4:56 gears and hello 12.7's which showed a lot of Maxi- Wedge 426 and 406's and 427 Fords the tail end of that beautiful Anniversary Gold 409...yeah, good ole' days.........there was no-such thing as a snow flake.

Chuck, this is the first time i have ever seen a 62 with a bubble top. I was unaware that one could still get them in 1962, as the bubble top was in 1961. When you first said a 1962 bubble top, i thought you were mistaken. LOL Very nice. I rode in a couple of SS 62's in high school. One was a 62 with a 409, and the other was possibly a 327, but not for sure. It is understandable why the owner drives with a smile on his face. "409,409, she so fine - my 409" Remember?

Keep in mind that there were three different trim levels of full sized Chevies in 1962 - Biscayne, Bel Air and Impala/Impala SS. The "bubble top" was NOT available in the top of the line Impala or SS. The 2 dr hardtop Impalas had a different roof line. Another huge difference was that the two lower level coupes were only available with entry level upholstered bench seats. The bucket seat/console option was reserved for the Impala SS. '62 was a critical year for another reason - it was the first year for the 327, one of the greatest V-8 engines ever made.

I couldn’t afford both a convert and the 409 so I ordered a white Impala convert with blue interior, the new 327, 4 speed and posi traction rear. I loved that car.. sold it to my next girlfriend when I had to go to Viet Nam in 66/67. She sold the 62, we married (54 yrs-she just passed). The guy who bought it robbed the 4 speed and posi for his 55chev and put the 62 into a field to rot away. Arrrgh!🥴😥
