Palmer should've won this tournament. But Jack Nicklaus was the greatest of all time so what can you say other than the greatest won his first Open here.?

Arnie blew it on 9, leaving two chips in a row short. A shame he came so close in his backyard twice - here and in '73.

Palmer should have won at least 3 or 4 more majors but his putting failed him so many times. I’m still sick about the 66 US Open.

I can imagine that my 6 handicap would struggle to break 90 on Oakmont under Open conditions. Maybe even 95.

Good job! Enjoyed! How the hell did Palmer not realize it's stroke play?! What have you been doing all day Palmer? Good thing for Palmer it wasn't even. That brain fart would have cost him dearly. Anyway, love Palmer and Jack... Good guys. RIP Arnie.

@Jeffrey Palmer That may be true. I forgot who said it, may have been Butch Harmon, Palmer was the best 5 iron ball striker ever. That being said, I have heard a chorus say that Palmer tee to Green was crazy good. In Palmer's 40's, when he never won, all the golf experts stated, tee to green Palmer was gold. But, he couldn't make a putt to save his life. In Palmer's prime his putting was average at best. On the other hand, Nicklaus's putting was superior, especially in clutch situations. It never left him. The '86 Masters he was making putts from all over the joint. Nicklaus's putter came thru time and again all the way to the end --Saint Andrews drains a 15 foot slider for birdie to end his career --amazing. Remember the 104 footer he made with Johnny Miller talking trash right to his face. Nicklaus was a beast, even in his '70's.

@@jamesdesch3201 yes, Nicklaus was definitely better than Palmer. Interesting fact about Palmer , he shortly quit smoking 🚬 thereafter. He never won a tourney after he quit smoking. Btw, Palmer was a great player albeit for just a few years.

The way Palmer hit his putt at 29:50 is exactly the way my brother in law cheated. If he missed the 1st time he would one hand it, miss again and not count the very last putt hard to beat that pencil LOL RIP brother in law
