My dream car 1963 Chevrolet Impala SS 409 four speed since 1972

I've owned a 63 Impala SS 327/4spd factory A/C car for twenty years. This is a beautiful car and unusual color. The 409 born cars share the same notation on the cowl tag as any V-8 offered that year. I took my first ride in my parents friends 63 SS in 1964, been hooked since. They are special cars.

Spectacular muscle iron,this takes me back.A guy I use to know had a Impala (425/409) most of the guys around us had 327 ChevyII.But the 409 Impala was looked upon as unique and fast.Thanks for the memories!and Happy Trails'😎

Greetings from Ohio ... You're right!! This car is absolutely spectacular in every detail. Awesome colors. A true classic, and real pick!! Congratulations for finding it, as well as to its new owner-to-be!! May all stay safe and well! P.S. Born during a period when Chevy could do no wrong! My personal favs in the full-size muscle cars; 62-63-64. Again, KUDOS on this beautiful find!

I absolutely love Impala's and if I won the lottery I'd procure a '59, '60, '63 through 68, all big-block SS Chevy muscle!! Please, Lord...I only need to win once! My dad had a '60, '64 and a '68. My first car was a '67 SS with a 327 and 2-speed power-glide. It was 1976 and I bought it from a dealer for $550.00!!

I bought a 1963 Impala from an elderly couple in 1977 for 300 dollars.The owner worked at Fremont Ca assembly plant. He had a 300 HP 327 installed with wire spinner hub caps.Both husband and wife were heavy smokers and the car was full of yellow nicotine stains.BUT no rust/cancer anywhere. That was another car I should have kept.(darn-it)

I had a 63 SS convertible. Took out the 327/300 and put in a 400/409. A very heavy engine. T-10 4 speed was garbage and after scrambling 4 of them put in a Muncey. Had to open up the Bell housing hole for it to bolt up. A most beautiful car, Power Windows and Steering which this one does not have. Dark Blue White top. Most beautiful Chevy ever. I don't think the grey does it justice.

Had 63SS with 327 4 speed Muncie 4:11 posi rear end. Red inside out dual holly carbs dual feed dual pump. Bought engine brand new from les Vogel Chevrolet in SF 327 fuelinjected alum. Heads with solid lifters putting out 365 hp. Tunnel ram aluminum intake manifold for 302 Z28 cost me more than the engine. Took motor to gottelis speed shop in south SF to blueprint engine. Turned out 445hp on the dyno. I blew axles separated the 2 pc drive shaft. Loved that car the money I put into it I could of bought 2 houses in San Francisco, no joke down payment. It was fast but I paid the price speeding drag racing exhibition of speed and so on. Turned 29 moved to Walnut Creek very nice area and the impala didn’t belong here. Wife had a73 Buick Riviera GS daughter had 82 Pontiac trans am electric blue.bought a new 86 BMW735i and sold the 63 Ss impala. Still crying after all this years

@ejp754 жыл бұрын
The coolest thing about the 409 is that it started as a truck motor that Chevy began putting into cars. And it has the unusual scalloped shaped heads/ valve covers. The “W” Series Big Block motor - The 409 cu in motor was Chevys top regular production engine from 1961 to 1965, with a choice of single or 2X4-barrel Rochester carburetors. On December 17, 1960, the 409 engine was announced along with the Impala SS (Super Sport) model. The initial version of the engine produced 360 hp with a single 4-barrel Carter AFB carb. The same engine was upped to 380 hp in 1962. A 409 hp version of this engine was also available, developing 1 hp per cubic inch with a dual four-barrel aluminum intake manifold and two Carter AFB carburetors. It had a forged steel crankshaft. In the 1963 model year, output reached 425 bhp @ 6000 rpm and 425 lb⋅ft of torque @ 4200 rpm with the Rochester 2X4-barrel carb setup, an 11:1 compression ratio and a solid lifter camshaft. The engine was available through mid-1965, when it was replaced by the 396 cu in 375 hp Mark IV big-block engine. Those W Series Big Block 409’s were only factory available options on heavier vehicles; full size cars or light trucks. Hence there was no RPO option for Corvette ever offered. And production ended after the Mark IV Big Block 396 motors came out. The Mark IV 396, 427, 454 motors were the top Rat Motors through to the end of Performance in 1971. When the EPA regulations brought an end to factory high performance.
@grex12424 жыл бұрын
Nonsense about the 409 starting as a truck engine. It started out as a 348, also not a "truck" engine, unless you count virtually every Chevrolet engine in that time period (including the 235 6cyl.) as a "truck" engine.

A comment implies that the 409 started as a truck motor , in fact this was not the case the 409 started with the 348 [shares same block and head castings ] and this was the Chevy answer to the Ford FE series which was introduced in 1958 in 332 and 352 displacements. Both motors were reaction to the fact that by the late 50's cars were getting heavier and had more power equipment such as power steering , air conditioning and power windows and seats , as well as power tops that caused drag on the generators of the time the Ford Engine was increased to 390 CID in 1961 and 406 by 1962 the 409 was discontinued by 1965 the Ford FE was raised to 428 CU and in in 1969 became the 428 SCJ [ Super Cobra Jet ] that at the time was rated at 335 HP that the NHRA didn't buy for five minutes given the times that the engines were running and rated them at 395 HP although dynos were saying around 435 the FE turned out to be a better engine and was produced for truck use until 1974 , and the Mopar 426 Hemi was better than either of them

A contractor buddy in the early eighties showed me his "bubble back " window 409, one of 550? made. His I believe was #383., and he built his rancher house in Lynden, Wa. specifically so he could park the car........in his living room. His story was the Beach Boys were given the first four numbered cars. He raced corporate so he should know, but people refer to these as "bubble top" and he always referred to it as "bubble back" window, which is what it actually was. Tore the lug nuts off at the local quarter mile, factory dual quads.
