My dad bought a 300SL Roadster in 1964 while we were in Germany, in 1964, I was 6 yrs. old, I of course didn't now what he bought , my mom might have at the time, he paid I believe, $2500 dollars. it was a beautiful car, and my brother has pic's of us at Travis AFB, and looking back it was the most beautiful car I've ever seen. and my dad was a man from an orphanage in Finland at 5 yrs. old ,and came to America and served in Korea and Viet Nam. I don't mean to share my thoughts and sorrows with everyone, over a car video, but I'll never forget my dad having that car. Thank you! And because of him I served in the Airforce and 14 yrs. later in the Army, My dad was a man without fear.

Hi, my dad bought his brand new in 1963 at Bozzani Porsche/Mercedes in Pasadena, CA. Identical to this one, a white/red roadster. My dad, also a Doctor, I fondly remember going on house calls with him., at over 100mph on the Santa Ana freeway. He would suspend the top to the rafters, he screwed up somehow & and it broke a few fingers. He told me it would do 145mph! He raced it at Riverside with other Doctors and their Porsches, Mercedes, Ferrari Dino's and more. The sound of it brought tears to my eyes. He traded it in, when we moved to Oregon, on a fun 1970 911E....I learned to drive on, I did get to "drive" the 300sl all over the giant parking lot at Santa Anita racetrack...they didn't race on Sunday's, on my dads lap. Very exciting for. 6 year old! Sad he didn't keep it...they're worth a cool million in great shape. Great video.

Hi Lou- I talked to my dad today, he said 145mph!? That 300sl would do 185mph! He knew how to drive it too...the fastest street production auto at the time. He is 95 now, he wishes he had kept it too, he says he would have given it to me. I love the classics, I've had a 69 280sl for 20 years as a daily driver, loved that car and, a 64 TR3 for many years...now I drive a Trusty Subaru. I will scope out you videos and subscribe too.

I might add...I would likely be dead, if not for the fine engineering of Mercedes-Benz and Guardian Angels when a huge boulder rolled off the mountain hit me and the car and we went over a 20' embankment and partially in the river. I broke my wrist and my nose, but fine..bruised where seatbelt held me. I still cry over the loss of that car. That was in 2003.

OMG, Lou, I have worked on this car! In the early '80s, I worked at a local shop in Tempe, Arizona, and I remember meeting Phil. I thought it was really cool to have serviced the LAST 300SL sold. In fact about a year later I was commissioned to restore Frank Lloyd Wright's Gullwing. FLW's car had been badly crashed. A local body craftsman did all the frame and body work, and I did all the mechanical work. It was a treat to be the first to drive it on its own power after setting for about 20 years. This video sure brings back memories. Thank you! -Steve

According to the Gullwing Group, there were only 26 1963 300SL's sold. I wonder if there is a record of how many were in each exterior color and how many were sold in the U.S. Aristocrat Motors in downtown Kansas City had a pristine white 1963 300SL on consignment on their tiny showroom floor sometime between 1969 and 1972. The asking price was $7,500. I think I remember it having a Behr air conditioner but I'm not certain after all these years. I took special interest in that 300SL since I was a teenager driving a lowly slow silver 4-cylinder 1956 190SL that I had bought from a neighbor for $600. I tried to persuade my father to buy the 300SL as an investment but I got nowhere with that idea. Over succeeding decades, I occasionally encountered "Duane" who was the parts department manager at Aristocrat Motors at the time that 300SL was on the showroom floor. Duane and I sometimes reminisced about that beautiful white 300SL.

This is a seriously interesting car, quite beautiful. Door handles so odd, yet cool. I'm dishing out the ever so rare.., "ooooooh!" with a bonus "Ahhhh!" and a WOW! White really works for this one. Observing the side view., If this same car would have originated today and marketed as a Star Wars themed roadster - it would sell like hotcakes! But then, that's just my opinion and I tend to think weird. As if you never coulda guessed - LoL. This guy had such an interesting parents

It should be noted that this car has three features that make it particularly desirable. I think the best cars were made between late 80's and 2005, that took the advantage of new materials and Automation, especially during the 90's ... Post that Excessive Automation, Off the Shelf Parts and 'gimmick and glitz' took over. Rolls Royce is producing it Logo on the wheel to stay upright ... it is first thing that goes ... Insurance Companies are writing off almost brand new cars with Automation Malfunctions ... I own two cars: BMW 750il V12 (E38), for Europe, (Sweden and Turkey), (SAAB 95 2.3t Vector (RHD) for tooling around here ... I shall keep them until they fall apart. I am also a part owner of an Auto parts and Repair outfit. New Cars are in a Mess and Dealers are the biggest Con People ..fleecing poor customers ...
