1963 Plymouth Sport Fury 426 Max Wedge Muscle Car Of The Week Video #60
This 1963 Plymouth Sport Fury was about as close to a drag-ready race car as you could buy from a dealer in '63. Besides its no-nonsense appearance, this car came equipped with the 426 Max Wedge Super Stock V8, a powerful competition engine boasting 11.1:1 compression and an advertised 415 HP at 5600 RPM. The dual-quad "short ram" intake, high-lift cam, free flowing exhaust, manual trans, Sure Grip differential, and a lack of accessories helped these cars stack up records in Super Stock drag racing. This one is from the Brothers Collection.

Ah, the Max Wedge. Aside from being a truly badass engine, the thing that makes this car so great is how unassuming it is. No fancy badges, limited chrome, dog dish wheels, but be rest assured if you pull up beside this baby, you're gettin' smoked!

As a16 year old spoiled brat my dad bought me a 1965 Sport Fury with a 426 wedge with one big Carter AFB and 4 speed. Its only draw back was an open 323 rear end. It was a blast to drive but I kept burning that right side tire down. My friend's dad owned a tire shop and he would change that right tire to the left till I wore them down slick. He new he would probably get to sell me some new tires for the rear. He sold the famous Denman Slicks and that is what I switched to. I am a Chevy guy now but I would love to have that Red with Black Vinyl top Sport Fury back now.

It is so cool that this “mom's car” with its skinny 14” wheels and three-speed could outpull most of this collection's hemi cars through the quarter. I grew up in that era and remember my mom's ‘62 Chrysler Windsor (the Canadian version of the Newport). It was a total DOG. Its four teeny drum brakes were good for ONE stop from 70 mph. After that you had to push the pedal through the floorboards to get anything to happen.

Really the first high performance car was the 55 Chrysler 300, but that was a luxury car that just happened to be fast and was way too expensive for the average working man to afford. So in my opinion, the 62 max wedge cars were the first muscle car, a mid size car with a huge engine and minimal options. I think the reason people say the 64 GTO was the first muscle car is because the max wedge cars were not really meant for everyday street use. But like the R-Code 427 Ford's, 409 Chevy's, and the 421SD Pontiacs, the Max Wegde cars all pre dated the GTO

The 55 Chrysler 300 was the first muscle car. First American car to come from the factory rated at 300hp since Duesenberg in 1928. The 56 Chrysler 300 was even more powerful than the 55. The 56 came with a 355hp 354ci Hemi...which made it the first American car to surpass the 1hp per cubic inch mark. Those cars completely dominated the 1955-56 Nascar seasons. Neither Ford or GM had anything that could touch it back then

I have spent some time with one of these cars. The one I dealt with had an automatic but the same color scheme. It had a sticker in the middle of the windshield that said the car was for high performance use only and not for daily use. It also had an aluminum K frame under it from the factory, trunk mounted battery with two battery cables for each terminal. The automatic cars had a unique driveshaft with 2 roller type bearings that slid into a rectangular tube on the transmission rather than a u joint. It could travel a long distance, allowing the suspension to work and not pull the driveshaft out of the transmission. The thing was built tough and would take some abuse. I saw it more than once get neutral dropped at 6000 rpm while hitting the Nitrous. It had a pair of 200 HP plates, Holley carbs, tube headers, aluminum rods, roller camshaft and 12.5-1 pistons, 4.88 gears and a set of 8 inch slicks. Never saw the driveshaft ever come out of it, except when the tranny got renewed.

The GTO is the first muscle car because the 389 was the engine you got with a 4 barrel or tri power no special orders no mazes either 335 horse or 360. Not the fastest but the easiest production car for anyone to order. This is why so many GTO cars are still around and there are not many 63 426 sport Fury's. Just the 318 poly block fury's which I would restore in a heartbeat.

What he failed to disclose when he mentioned the 3" exhaust was that both lead pipes from those beautiful ... but *extremely* heavy ... cast iron exhaust manifolds "kicked out" under the front seats and were capped with a 4-bolt square flange ... partially visible in at least one view during the video ... then that 2" remainder of the exhaust system takes off from the side of that 3" outlet. The purpose was that the system could be "uncapped" while racing, then capped off for the trip home. Quite a unique system for a factory-built, "streetable" race car.

I used to go to Aquasco dragstrip in Maryland and watch these Plymouths and Dodges in Super Stock class that had this motor and Trans. blow the doors off everything in their class. They ruled in the early sixties when I was 14 and I couldn't wait to watch these rigs run. Factory stock bad asses. The 409 Chevys couldnt stand the abuse and Fords couldnt either. Very nice Chrysler product before they cheapened them with plastic and stripped of chrome.

the true definition of a muscle car is a intermediate body with the biggest motor you can stuff in it dodge came out with the first true muscle car in 1955 the dodge d-500 look it up check it out not the gto or the 49 cadillac mopar ruled the drag strip forever
@1badhaircut
@1badhaircut 9 жыл бұрын
The reason the 1964 GTO is the 1st muscle car is because that was the 1st time the auto magazines began using that term. Previous intermediate body cars were available with the full-sized car's powertrains -- such as earlier Mopars and the 1949 Olds 88 - but such cars did not have special names - appearance packages - wheels etc which identified them. A 1964 Olds F85 with the B09 Police Pkg was not a muscle car until its name became 442. Muscle cars did not invent performance - they identified it as a market segment. By-that-definition a "sleeper" such as a big-block no-frills Nova is not "musclecar" but a base 396/325 Chevelle automatic is. .
@1badhaircut

The reason the GTO is considered the first true muscle car is because it did not have a small engine option. The big block 389 was the standard size engine. It's what started the muscle car trend. Big engine midsize car. Yes this combination definitely qualifies under muscle car conditions but the big engines for this car such as the 383 413 and 426 Max wedge we're all options they weren't standard. The Pontiac GTO had a standard engine of 389. If you wanted a smaller engine than 389 you had to buy a LeMans or Tempest but you weren't going to get a GTO with anything smaller than a big engine. That is why the GTO is considered the first true muscle car.

I remember back in the 60's when the GTO first came out and it ran in A/ Compact which put it running against 260 and 289 CI Falcons mostly. Needless to say the GTO blew them in the dirt, ah ,the good ole days . Back in the day I was riding shotgun in my buddy's '62 409 ( Jahns Power slot pistons, Howard Aluminum rods, align bored and balanced) 4 speed , 411 positrac , you get the idea, Hot 426 SS Plymouth pulls up next to us sounding really mean, light turns red, buddyis about 1/2 car length ahead, goes for second gear, misses second gear. motor revs to the 6.5 K mark and blows number one piston out the side of the block. One expensive street race that took a while to recover from as we made about $1.50 per hour back in 1963

Is This the fastest production muscle car of 60's/70's ? Maybe So Ya there were a few faster and few that were close but................ Max wedges were assembly line production cars that anybody could buy, They were affordable and available. Example: 69 Camaro 427 ZL1 : less than 70 sold nobody could afford it and were they faster than a max wedge??? Example Ford Thunderbolt : Not a true assembly line production car, how many were made? 120 or so, only for the elite with connections But then again max wedges don't count because muscle cars were not invented yet.

Seems like this was faster in the quarter mile than the Hemi Cuda, Challenger, Charger, Chevelle SS454 LS-6, etc. so that would mean that true power muscle cars peaked during the early 1960s rather than the late 1960s to 1970 which most people focus on as the “performance era” for factory muscle cars.
