The race you are about to see appear as originally broadcast and may contain imagery that is offensive and doesn't align with NASCAR's values. NASCAR has since permanently banned the display of the confederate flag at all events.

The quality's surprisingly good for a race during this time period.

Just a decent ¿16mm? film reel - There was stuff filmed in 35mm that, if properly shown, could surpass 4k broadcasts in quality

As far as I know, this might have been the only NASCAR race that Charlie Brockman, an original member of the IMS Radio broadcasting crew, ever worked. Brockman was most associated with USAC, and as mentioned, along with Sid Collins and Jim Shelton (who worked turn 4), were part of the original broadcasting crew for the IMS Radio network, going back to the early 1950s, and he was the statistician on the early Indy race broadcasts when IMS Radio first did the Indianapolis 500 live start-to-finish in 1953. He would also anchor the first ABC WWOS broadcast of the Indianapolis 500 in 1965, and would later become a central figure in the controversy surrounding the events of the 1981 Indianapolis 500, as it was his choice to penalize Bobby Unser one position for passing cars under caution and not Mario Andretti for committing the same infraction at the same time that caused that controversy to erupt (his was the swing vote, as two of those in the 5-member panel charged with making the decision voted to penalize both drivers and the other two voted not to penalize either driver).

First written entry here: It is REALLY strange seeing AJ Foyt driving a Dodge in this race; as he was strongly associated with Ford by this time in his racing career. Foyt drove a Banjo Matthews prepped Ford at the Daytona 500 in February 1964.

I believe AJ had a falling out with Ford that year because they would not supply him with a Ford engine for Indy so he went back to a roadster and of course won the 500. The last roadster to win. He then really stuck it to Ford by winning the Firecracker 400 in a Dodge!

@@brianrigney8795 Ah! That makes sense. And to further validate what you said about Ford not supplying AJ with an engine for Indy . . . a couple of years ago I saw a brief 1964 film clip of AJ behind the wheel of a rear engine Champ Car [aka IndyCar], with the familiar Number 1 on the nose cone, with the car being powered by an Offy engine. AJ said that car didn't handle to his liking, so he went with the roadster for the 1964 race.

Tremendous fight for the win late in the race with Chrysler vehicles going 1-2-3-4-5-6 with only ELEVEN cars finishing 90% of the total distance (360/400 miles) --- Kinda odd how they had qualifying races despite only 34 cars showing up 🤷🏻‍♂️ While Ford and GM clearly cared about other aspects, back then Chrysler opted to make their cars be fast in a straight line, reliable and stable at NASCAR speeds

No wonder Ford and Chevy didn't want the Hemi allowed. No contest really.

Any time one car can pull away from 40 car field that drafts behind him at Daytona…there’s a problem, big time. It should have already been addressed by this point of season.
