*POINT STANDINGS and WINS before the 1983 CAROLINA 500 (3 of 30):* #98 Joe Ruttman (326pts, GM) #9 Bill Elliott (-1, Ford) #22 Bobby Allison (-8pts with 1 win, GM) #21 Buddy Baker (-22, Ford) #90 Dick Brooks (-42, Ford) #75 Neil Bonnet (-54, GM) #44 Terry Labonte (-79, GM) #88 Geoff Bodine (-83, GM) Buddy Arrington (Dodge #67) was 11th, Harry Gant (GM #33) and Ron Bouchard (GM #47) were tied for 13th, Dave Marcis was 17th (GM #71), Richard Petty (GM #43) was 18th while Darrell Waltrip (GM #11) had a very bad start after getting concussed in the Daytona 500. The Daytona 500 was won by part-timer Cale Yarborough (GM #28). Drivers listed are the season's current top8, last season's top8 plus whatever race winner that doesn't fit any of those 2 descriptions. Yes, I’m using the unsponsored names of the races. In North Carolina’s case, the Spring race is the Carolina 500 while the later one is the American 500.

My home track AIR Atlanta International Raceway then AMS it was never the same Atlanta after the first re configuration in 1997. My first race was the 1984 Coca Cola 500 won by Benny Parsons was there in 89 when Grant Adcox was killed But still 1992 Hooters 500 was the best Richard Petty last race Jeff Gordon's first race and the Underbird winning the championship on the last lap from Bill Eilliot and also Earnhardts last Atlanta win 2000 but the original configuration was king.

"The Dean of Auto Racing," Chris Economaki, once again was astonishingly able to see three months into the future and tell us that A.J. Foyt would miss the 1978 Indy 500. Um...just a sec...what's that??? Oh...I've just been informed that Foyt did run the Indy 500 that year. 😂

All these old races..its like they're from a different planet. The legendary drivers, colors, tracks and cars. I realize things change. But damn its like I've been a rock/metal musician for 40+ years and its not only that things aren't the same, who is replacing the old legends? Nobody...Same with racing....jeez its just an entirely different thing now, not some updated version. Its not just 'nothing is the same', its not nearly as good🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Back when cars DID NOT have sponsor covered cars running. Love it. And REAL cars not cookie cutter templates, plus pushrod iron engines. And drivers were courteous. Not the demo derby of today's drivers.

**FACTS BEFORE the 1983 DAYTONA 500** · Several interesting drivers changed rides or numbers. Kyle Petty changed the number to #7 thanks to sponsorship by 7Eleven. Tim Richmond moved to the new GM #27 BlueMax car (in 1982 that was MC Anderson and Cale Yarborough drove it). Cale himself moved to the GM #28 Ranier car. Buddy Baker went from the #28 to Ford #21 from the Wood Brothers. Neil Bonnet went from the Wood brothers to the GM #75 from RahMoc. DiGard Racing added a 2nd car: Geoff Bodine would drive the typical #88 while Bobby Allison got the new #22. Morgan Shepherd started the season without a proper seat while Jody Ridley moved to a much reduced schedule after leaving the Ford #90 from Donlavey (Richard Brooks got that car). · The 5th Clash saw the first 2 accidents in Clash history. First, Bobby Allison lost control exiting T4 and hit the wall before the pitlane and then there was a small final-lap pile-up after Darrell Waltrip tried to block Terry Labonte from trying to jump from the 3rd to 1st starting in T3. · Ricky Rudd and Geoff Bodine got the front row for the Daytona 500. · On Duel #1, Bruce Jacobi had a nasty crash after he lost control exiting T2, caught air, bit the wet grass and flipped very violently. He went into a coma in hospital and died in 1987. Earnhardt won the race. Names like Arrington, DW, McDuffy, Phil Parsons and others didn’t make the field by finishing in the top15 so they had to rely on their qualifying speeds. · On Duel #2, Rusty Wallace had a very similar crash to Jacobi but his post-bite flip was less violent. Neil Bonnet won the race and this time names like Allison, Shepherd, Rick Wilson, Jimmy Means, Sterling Marlin, Slick Johnson and Joe Millikan all failed to get in the top15. · In the end, Shepherd, Millikan, Slick, Wilson and of course Rusty all failed to make the field. A total of 70+ drivers tried to make the field.
