My Grandfather had a 1976 J-10, I wound up with it and kept for several more years. It sat like a 2wd truck, which made it pretty easy to load, get into without climbing etc. I miss full-size trucks like that.

I think the Gladiator J2000 series ended in 1988 or 1989....the Grand Wagoneer in 1991....I had a brand new 1991 Grand Wagoneer..........I loved the Brook Stevens styling

@@OsbornTramain That sounds about right... but consider that the small Cherokee aped the look, and lasted to 2001 (or so?). That's 30 years!!

@@realbogus The XJ Cherokee was very much a 1980s design though. Park it next to an early Chrysler minivan or GM J-body wagon and they're clearly of the same era, the Cherokee wasn't trying to be '60s retro. That being said, giving it legs had to be a priority considering how AMC's last two clean-sheet desgins - the Pacer and the Matador coupe - had sold very well their first year, meh the second, and then fallen off a cliff once everyone who wanted one had one.

I currently have a 1982 Jeep Cherokee Laredo. It’s designed is timeless! The Rambler Jeep Dealer couldn’t sell the trucks until the “ Honcho” Then they were hot! My father said Jeep was losing in the early 60’s because they didn’t have a V8 and everyone else did, until the put the Buick motor in them.

AMC and Rambler wasn't involved until Kaiser Jeep was purchased by AMC in the very end of 1969. Sales were never good partly because Jeep had an underfunded under-capitalized dealer network. Things improved once AMC got involved. Rambler's last model year was 1969, the same year AMC acquired Jeep. AMC had already been selling V8 engines to Jeep, you could get a Jeep with an AMC V8 before the acquisition. The Buick Motor was the V6, not the V8. Jeep began to have year over year sales increases all thru the 1970's under AMC control. Jeep was a wholly owned subsidiary. AMC kept them legally separated to avoid future potential law suits due to the roll over issues.

Today’s Jeep Gladiator embodies the same spirit.

I knew a guy with a snow plow business that used these Jeeps. They immediately rattled apart like nothing I ever saw. It was freaking scary to ride in them after a seasons use.

That F 100 4x4 had a weird 8 foot box/body on a 120" wheelbase - so it doesn't look like it goes with the cab.

That was the result of Ford still suffering from thier unibody fiasco from a couple years earlier. Another one of Ford's "better ideas" gone wrong.

Note the 2-door regular cab so you can actually haul something in the bed besides a giant screen from Sam's club.

Interesting. Freddie the Clown is heavily influenced by Charlie Chaplin's The Tramp character.
