1964 Ludwig Drum Kit in Black Oyster Pearl - 13/16/22

Apologies for the shaky video, we didn't notice this until it was too late and the kit had sold.
One of those holy grail drum kits, only a couple months older than the kit Ringo Starr bought at Manny's Music and played on the Ed Sullivan Show. And, of course, in slightly large sizes. But that's not going to stop Ryan from playing some Ringo for you!
Sizes are 9x13, 16x16, and 14x22. Toms are fitted with coated over clear Ambassadors. Kick drum is a coated Ambassador batter with a felt strip and an old school translucent white Ludwig Weathermaster single ply head on the front.
Snare is a new Ludwig Legacy Mahogany Jazz Fest in Vintage Black Oyster, with a coated Ambassador batter and stock clear Weathermaster snare side and 16-strand wires.

I think the snare is different but I could be wrong. If you listen to Black Sabbath, I think the drums on the first album is almost the same too.

@@Paisteconvert he used this exact Ludwig kit in all his bands (with a swivomatic tom mount) from the mid 60s and then used it with sabbath till they recorded paranoid. He recorded paranoid on them and used them on the first couple months of the paranoid tour. He then moved on to a buddy rich kit from slingerland (24/13/16/18)

True, but this guy could run circles around Ringo whether it's 1966 or 2023. Ringo had a great choice in drum sound, but there's tens of thousands of drummers with more talent and creativity that will never get 1/10 of the fortune and fame Ringo fell into out of dumb luck.

That's it. That's THE Beatles drum sound you hear on their songs from 1964's Beatles for Sale all the way to The White Album in 1968 when Ringo switched to the maple shell kit towards the end of the White Album sessions. The heads and tunings probably differed but from May 31, 1964 thru September 11, 1968 this is the sound of most of the band's greats including Revolver and Sgt. Pepper's. It sounds amazing. People replicating Ringo's kit never realize part of the many keys to his sound is the 3 ply Mahogany/Poplar/Mahogany shells that give the drums a warmer sound compared to maple.

It's no coincidence that The Beatles used a similar kit for almost all of their recordings and those are still amongst the best sounding records ever. Forget about the mics, preamps, consoles...The sound was good at source.

Amazing how these drums can be tuned to resonate and sustain in perfect harmony with each other, yet have completely different pitch between all 4 drums. What type of heads are you using top to bottom and what's your tuning procedure?

(I put this info in video descriptions) Tunings on toms has the batter head about a whole step lower than the bottom. Honestly don't remember how I tuned the kick drum.

Hi, are the steel rims the original 1.6 mm ones? Or have you replaced them with 2.3 mm ones? I have a vintage Ludwig and some rims are slightly crooked! I would like to change them but I don't know which ones to choose! Thanks

Mine a down beat same wrap from 1967.with a club date bass drum countsole railing mount is on the side with seagull tips spurs don’t know if it came that way

Awesome! I have the same kit, also a 1968 100% original Ludwig Black Oyster Pearl. I was wondering, does the modern snare fit the set in looks? I was also thinking of getting a new Ludwig Jazz Fest to match, since the originals really cost a fortune! Thanks for the taking the time to response in advance!

Or find a Ludwig Standard snare drum from 1968-72 and change out the lugs. Same shell as the pre-1969 Jazz Fests as the Standards have the mahogany/poplar/mahogany shells.

Love this kit. It’s a shame the Ludwig Jazz Fest snares are so expensive, as they sound great. You might be better off buying a Ludwig Bronze Supraphonic…they sound even better..

Or you can just purchase a Ludwig "Standard" snare and have the same shell as the JF and change out the hardware as you like. That's my current "go-to" snare.
