Comparison between 63 Oldsmobile StarFire and 64 Oldsmobile StarFire. Take the tour button switches and knobs. Be sure to stick around for a name that tune at the end as well as would you rather two different scenarios. It’s something completely random.

My Grandfather bought my Dad a 64 Starfire, canary yellow with black leather and fully loaded, right before his Junior year of high school in Aug '65...it was stolen from the school parking lot the last day of school before the Christmas break...CHP found it 3 weeks later off of Highway 101, stripped out and then burnt to a crisp in East Palo Alto, Calif...my Dad passed last Aug, but there's still a color photograph of that car on the fridge in his garage to this day...he loved that car...🤘🏻🇺🇸

I personally prefer the looks of the 63 but I might be biased because I have one. I also like the 61 and 62 Starfires. I love the side aluminum panels that they had the first 3 years, I feel like it makes them stand out among other models of the era.

I’ll have to look up and see what the car went for brand new but that’s crazy. It’s amazing anybody buy new cars back then if they depreciated like that I would’ve just waited. I only bought one new car so far I don’t ever plan on buying another new car again it was a 2014 Blosser are spec turbo I love the car but man it was cursed. Three auto accidents one of them was my fault tractor trailer backed into it at a Mazda dealership that one wasn’t my fault the one that was my fault was I hit a deer. I’m going to look for one this year because it’s not really a new car it’s kind of like a used car it’s not really an old car but it would be 10 years old at this point. And that’s crazy saying that out loud. Foster was a car that was everywhere when I bought mine and I don’t hardly ever see them now I still think they look good Real quick story friend of mine bought a Volkswagen GTI the same gear that I bought my lost our spec turbo we actually bottom medium couple weeks apart. Volkswagen GTI was the name and hatchbacks that was the car to have if you wanted to hatchback. That was before the focus RS I would’ve totally bought the RS or the fiesta ST those were sick but that didn’t exist I don’t think when I bought mine. Anyway we raced I blew his doors off. In the velocity was cheaper and he is a far better driver than I am. And the look on his face was just great. Same guy I raised in the van episode when I reach the 2001 Honda Odyssey first of his Jetta wagon he had pretty much the same look on his face when I beat him in a 2001 Honda Odyssey I love the under dogs =)

Thank you for another interesting car review. Starfire was a sports luxury coupe back in the day. The Toronado came in 1966 and changed everything and replaced this car. The Starfire had competition inside the brand ( Oldsmobile) and inside GM and outside GM. It was just too much I guess. If that car had lived the equal today if Oldsmobile was still being produced would be an Aurora. They used that brush aluminum theme in the 1980's too in several Oldsmobiles. They paid attention to details back then too, You did a good job going through the details and sharing the car. It is appreciated.

I just loved 1963 with the brushed aluminum side moldings and the taillights. I love the 1964 interior over the 1963s. Oldsmobiles and Buicks were considered the higher end of the GM hierarchy, if you will, aka bankers' hotrods. Oldsmobiles were no slouches. In 1965 I had a picture (advertisement) of an Oldsmobile Starfire on me wall and a 4-4-Deuce. The 1964 394 Cuber vs. the 371 engine was basically bored and stroked and a tich of horsepower increase. The 394 replaced the 371 in Super 88 and 98 cars for 1959 and 1960 and a detuned version was used in the 88 for 1961 and the Dynamic 88 for 1962-1964.

'63 VS '64: making just enough changes to make you feel like you no longer had the latest & greatest! It's hard for us to believe today, but *many people in the 1960's actually bought a brand new car every year or at least every other year.* Normal working people too. In the early '60s most wives still didn't work and so many families just had one car with the wife driving the husband to work and picking him up with alcoholic beverage at the ready.

A lot of people do not know Oldsmobile was the first American car. Like David Buick, Ransom Eli Olds was a Scottish. When Olds sold Oldsmobile to GM he started REO. Like REO Speed Wagon and invented the first gasoline lawn mower. Oldsmobile dyed a terrible death when they decided around 2000 to compete with European luxury cars running off what was left of their aging loyal customers.

The transmission in this car is the Roto Hydra-Matic used in Oldsmobile full sized models (with the 394 engine) from MY 1961 through 1964. It was also used in Pontiac Catalinas & Pontiac Grand Prix models in those years. Pontiac Bonnevilles ('61-'64) had the 4-speed Jetaway (Controlled Coupling) Hydra-Matic. The Roto Hydra-Matic had 3 speed ranges plus a small rotor which took the place of the tall first gear that was in the Jetaway (Controlled Coupling) Hydra-Matic. The Roto Hydra-Matic was a troublesome unit prone to various problems. We had to have this transmission rebuilt after only 51,000 miles on our 1963 Oldsmobile Super 88. Oldsmobile & Pontiac got the Turbo Hydra-Matic for MY 1965. Cadillac & Buick got the Turbo Hydra-Matic for MY 1964.

Thank you for that correction I saw it in the advertisement that it says super range so I just wanted to set the record straight I saw conflicting information I think they put the turbo HydraMatic in a different car one with a column mounted shifter. But I finally found a piece of advertisement that said it so that’s why I wanted to see it right there because it’s really hard to find advertisement pieces that spell it out I only found two. And I wasn’t going to miss my opportunity to do so. =)

I go to a local car show on Monday nights and a guy drives a 55 De Soto wagon it is absolutely gorgeous until you look at the interior he changed out all the gauges and put custom seats in it and it’s steering wheel and I’ve been on the fence whether or not to ask him about featuring his car because changing the interior is very cringe to me especially on that car. But it’s a 55 De Soto wagon it was stocked from the outside aside from being lowered a little bit 55 Desoto wagon is like the cats meow. The only thing I don’t like about the 55 De Soto is that stupid gear shift lever I love the push buttons of the 56 that’s the only thing I would change about that car

The 394 was replaced in '65 with the 425, an enlarged version on the 330 in the Cutlass. The Roto-Hydramatic was used only in Olds 1961-64 and Pontiac Catalina and GP the same years. It was replaced in '65 with the TurboHydramatic. The Belvedere in the upcoming video is actually a 1952, not a '53.

That's an after-market clock of course. Going slightly outside the options in the "would you rather": I would chose a 61 or 62 Starfire over the later models. Grand Prix for the 2nd scenario. I'm not sure I am right about this, but I think front lap belts were required by law in 64, and the rear seat belts were optional. Again, not completely sure about this.

Seat belts - it depends, September 25, 1961. Wisconsin became the first state to require seat belts be installed in the front seats of all new cars. In California, vehicles were required to have seat belts for all seating positions as early as January 1, 1964. By 1965 all states had laws requiring seat belts be installed.

It would’ve been a really hard choice in 1964 all of the car companies brought their A game, and then you had Ford with the Mustang what I would give to have been able to go to the worlds fair and see that car for the first time. I might do a 64 1/2 mustang this year I was waiting for the base to get a little bit bigger because popular cars don’t do well on this channel. I know a guy who has a really cool mustang T5 fastback that went to Germany and has a stellar story. But once again I didn’t do it because those cars don’t do well on this channel and I wanted to try to get my base a little bit bigger so I can try to expand my horizons a little bit like I know where there’s some really cool muscle cars 71 Cuda 69 Daytona that I have access to but it’s weird like I don’t wanna pour my heart and soul into something that nobody will watch each episode I put eight hours of time into I would rather put eight hours of time into something people would watch. =) Plus this is the go to Classic Car channel for all the cars that got ignored. But Truthfully if it has an engine and wheels I’m into it I just hate traction control I think it’s the stupidest thing ever conjured up

You've got the transmission wrong. First, the Turbo Hydramatic never had the "R" at the bottom of the shift quadrant, always the next position below park. Second, what was called the Turbo Hydramatic from 1965-on, in 1964 was the Super Turbine 400 automatic, exclusive to Buick and Cadillac, which didn't have a middle gear position, nothing between "D" and "L". The "S" or "L2" position was added in 1965 and called the TH400 in all of the GM car brands. If this was a 3-speed automatic, then it would have been the Roto-Hydramatic. But that one ended with the 1963 model year. As with the senior Pontiacs, in 1964, being part of the Olds "98" series, this car would have had the 4-speed Jetaway HydraMatic, which was the last GM automatic to have the "R" at the bottom. In 1964, the only other automatic available in the Olds brand was the 2-speed ST300, which came in the Olds "88" series and the smaller midi-size cars like the F85, Cutlass and 442, if an automatic was ordered. The only reason that Cadillac used the ST400 is because they always had to be at the top of technology and the ST400 was the smoothest-shifting GM automatic yet. Cadillac buyers wouldn't have accepted anything less.

@@What.its.like. Yep, they had more different transmissions than any other carmaker used, probably to the current date. GM was extremely competitive internally among it's brands and sought to differentiate them as much as they could. With an eye on costs. Sure, the different brands may have shared chassis parts, but practically nothing else. In comparison, Ford shared it's transmissions with practically all it's different brands. Chrysler shared all it's transmissions with all it's other brands. Although everyone has shrunk it's offerings down today, you might find a running production change within a single model year. Most new car manufacturers are basically car assemblers and all the internal parts are outsourced, especially electronics.

GM had the habit of producing cars with standard or custom interiors. The Starfire likely was standard with the better interior because it was the top of the line modal. We had a 1965 Wildcat with the standard interior. I have seen other 65 Wildcats with the custom interior and they looked much like this Starfire. One of the features that came on the Custom and not on the standard was the interior door handles which were the same as on this Starfire. The custom interiors also got fancier seat belt buckles. Later we had a 1967 LeSabre with the Custom interior. It also had the interior door handles like this Olds and was an over all much nicer interior than the standard 65 Wildcat. Interesting to see how GM shared these interior trim hardware pieces across the different lines. I've seen those same 'custom' door handles show up on fancy Pontiac's as well.

The Olds car I would think that people would be request the most is the Olds Jetfire, which had a turbocharged 215 aluminum V8, is quite rare and used the 3-speed Roto Hydramatic. Here's a suggestion. get one of those mirrors on wheels, like the police use to inspect under cars, and put a remote camera or smart phone on it. With that, you can show the underside of the cars. Using one of those, you could use it to identify the transmissions(and show if the undersides were given as much care as the outsides of a car.

Never seen the dual mirror option. Reverb option, with AM/FM, also very rare. No air conditioning saved this original buyer almost $500, in 1964. Think about that. It was 10% of the purchase price. From a style perspective, all 3 years listed, have their own highlights. The’63 has a less is more early 60’s Kustoms theme. The ‘65 kind of the same. (Identical bucket seats btw) Whereas the ‘64, was somewhat over the top. And the cheaper model is the Jetstar not Jetfire. Jetfire was the turbo model. Truly miss mine and may need to get another one. Still cheaper than a ‘64 Chevrolet, which is nowhere near as nice 😊

The automatic transmission that was used in the 1964 Starfire and all other Oldsmobiles was actually a four-speed hydromatic not a 3-speed turbo hydromatic. The way in which you can tell is where the reverse is. If the reverse is between Park and neutral that is a turbo hydramatic 400 3-speed automatic if the reverse is next to low gear then it is a hydromatic dating back to 1939. Hydromatic do not have a torque converter they have a fluid coupling which is like a torque converter but without a stator to multiply torque. The fluid coupling does not.multiply torque. There are four forwards speeds in a hydromatic. There are two planetary gear sets back-to-back. When both are in low that is first gear, 3.6 to 3.9:1 2nd gear and third gear one planet is enloe the other is in high and it's reversed for the next gear. Fourth gear is 1:1 there is no overdrive. Now what exactly is the purpose of the letter S? When the transmission first came out in 1939 the range selector read the following NDLR, there was no parking gear in the early transmission. That came in the early 50's. Starting 1953 a high gear lockout was added in. When the driver selects S, fourth gear is locked out. This aids in hill climbing. Basically the S uses only gears 12 and 3. On the turbo hydramatic that would be used later that stood for second. And also locked out high gear. I can see that as a four-speed hydromatic because the shift range selector shows the reverse at the bottom.

Front seat seat belts WERE required for 1964 model cars, I had them in my 64 Monza. With the color match and the Oldsmobile emblem on the buckle, I would say that they were factory installed. That clock in front of the steering wheel is definitely NOT factory. It looks like a cheap stick on to me. Although it was built much like the Buick Wildcat, it was intended to compete with the Riviera, Pontiac Gran Prix, Ford Thunderbird and Chrysler 300 letter series.

@@What.its.like. not really. Car makers had been looking at safety since the 1930's. Many cars had recessed control knobs in the 30's and 40's. Chrysler had a padded dash board with recessed knobs and fold away window crank knobs in 49. Nash had the uniscope instrument panel with a tambour door covering the radio controls in 49 and 50. This was changed for the 51 model due to customer complaints, they wanted a more conventional glitzy style. Nash also offered seat belts, consistently, from the 49 model but there were few orders. Ford incorporated several safety features beginning with the 1956 model. They also offered an additional optional safety package encluding seat belts and padded dash board and sun visors but again, few people ordered it. By the late 50's, almost all US car makers offered seat belts, optional at extra cost, but few people ordered them. So the Government stepped in requiring front outboard seat belts for 64, rear outboard belts in 65, seat belts for all passengers in 66 and shoulder belts in 68.

You're right - it's a super gorgeous car. It looks original rather than restored. I couldn't quite read the odometer - did it say 48,000? Likewise I couldn't quite read the dash label that you said was for reverberation. I've never heard of that????? Might it have said refrigeration, for when aircon was fitted? Also the camera picked up the most amazing compound curves in the back window. Wow!

I couldn’t read that switch either I had to pause the video and sharpen it a little bit and that’s what it said because I honestly thought it said refrigeration as well but looking around the car I didn’t see any vents so I knew it couldn’t be that. I can’t believe that these cars never caught on they have everything going for them they look great, they have power and interiors to match Lincoln and Cadillac.. could you imagine how much getting a rear back glass would be that is a really complex curve. I wonder what that car is like to drive at night with headlights beaming through it

@@What.its.like. Well, I just learned something. Reverberation is indeed what it is. (I Googled it.) Apparently it works by delaying the sound to the rear speaker, so that it sounds like you're in a cathedral or somesuch. I sure hadn't heard of that one before!

Those early '60s GM tachometers were a joke! (Chevrolet offered them too!) Too small to be useful and itty-bitty speedometers in the center were a serious distraction from the road. Chevy in '65 offered a really nice one, and the vacuum gauge too. I liked the '62 Starfire better. They had ads with Florence Henderson in them. I would have loved to get her in the back seat of that car!!!!!! She lived to be 82. What I loved about the '62s and '63s was the cylinder speedometer, which GM tossed out the window in '64. That, to me, really cheapened up the looks of the car. I loved that thing! Lincoln offered that up until '77, the only manufacturer that did. Chrysler dumped it in '65, and Volvo in '68 I think.

The Pontiac hood mount tach was nearly useless but I assume a direct drive off the distributor as in my TR 6.

@@misterwhipple2870 My friend had a 400 convertable Judge. It was just a decal package. I thought they were all decals but I saw a rare 455 Ram Air 3 on the tube the other day. There were a few hot ones. I think maybe Firebird had a hood mount. The only good part would be if the mount was directly over the distributor for the PTO drive. Maybe some NASCAR rides had hood mounts. Electronic tachs were considered inaccurate in those days. On my Ninja 1000 I will hit valve float before the tach catches up so the float is my shift point.

Query... was that a tachometer or a vacuum gauge? I owned a 1969 Buick Grand Sport 400 with a console vacuum gauge as shown there, I know Pontiac Grand Prix et al had vacuum gauges of that era, no tach I had to buy an aftermarket tach!
