Larrabee won the 400m individual Gold. Putting him on the second leg proved to be a genius move.

Thank you for the rare video! The poor Trinidad runner on the 3rd leg. I have felt that pain. Once you chase them and they won't break, you can not recover.

What a superb race - I have never seen this before, thanks for posting. If Metcalfe had paced his 2nd leg slightly better, I think that the GB team could have challenged USA - though Henry Carr would have have been extremely difficult to get past. Interesting to note that on a wet cinder track in 1964 the GB team ran 3:01.7, whereas in 2021 (on a high tech track) GB could only muster 3:03.29!

Great run by Robbie Brightwell, but then he had to run well to match his GF and get a medal.

That just goes to show how great these runners were.I have often thought about what the USA four could have compared with the "68 team that set that "immortal" record.

A great race by the American team. Can't do any better than a Gold medal and a World Record at the same time.

Thanks for this-I was in HS when this occurred and I have never seen the entire race before. All of the athletes gave it their all but the USA 4 were just too good.Always admired the great Henry Carr-a runners runner. Sadly Carr and Larrabee are no longer with us-great champions both.Watching tese videos always reminds me of Roosevelt's "Man In The Arena".

Henry carr won the 200 meters gold medal. He was an outstanding sprinter. Had he chosen the 400 meters more than likely he would have won that gold. He was put on the 4X400 relay anchor for a good reason. He went on to play safety for the NFL NEW YORK GIANTS.

That literally sums it up for Carr-a runners runner. He made a 44.5 split on that track look easy.

USA relay wanted Henry Carr on the anchor because they knew he would bring home the baton in first place.

A great and gutsy race, the thing I cringed about was when runners fell at the end of their race onto those cinders. When I ran in high school in the late 60s and early 70s, we had cinder tracks and if you fell, well it was not a very good day. You could be months picking cinders out of your skin.

I'm not at all sure that era was as clean as some imagine: US, GB, Germany, SU, in particular. Dosages might not have been as high as later.

The US has dominated the 4x400 ever since this race. In 1964 They broke the 4x400 record 3:00.6. The current world record in the 4x400 held by the US is 2:54.21. Nobody comes close
