I always said the end of car simplicity was in the early 1990s when fuel injection was forced down our throats, then the "safety" regulations went haywire and now you need 10 billion airbags on the driver's side and cardboard unibody construction. You know how many of these features my old Peugeot has? None, the most luxury you get in the basic version of that car was servo brakes, no power steering, no heated seats, no parking sensors and no cruise control. According to these safety laws I should be dead about 40 times by now driving that car, but the car hasn't even seen a dent in itself for 3 decades. Also, you can still find a lot of old cars in good condition, and all you have to do with them is keep up regular maintanance the previous owner(s) did and it'll last you forever, doesn't have to be a beater.

We had a '66 250D and a 67 280S ex ambulances, these were around a foot longer then standard, in the seventies in Holland, the S for its time was fast 220 kmh on the clock was no real problem, the D 150kmh .....eventually, they both had "high speed" read 15" wheels and tyres on them, there is however no need to be in a hurry to get away from would be assailants, the things were built like tanks, just get in and your safe. My brother totalled another car ones with the S in the snow and sledge hammers could not take out the smallish dent in the guard of the S after the accident. If I recall correctly, the bottom right rectangle had three indicator lights: Parking brake indicator, High/Low beam indicator, and generator. My Dad had the 1966 gasoline version of this car and part of the right of passage for getting your driver's license was learning to drive stick on Dad's car. As others have noted, it was a column mounted 4 speed mated to a generous and rathe forgiving clutch. He taught all 4 kids how to drive it and we didn't break anything.

That glowing salt shaker was so comforting in below zero F weather, here in Minnesota. Even with one cylinder blown, I was able to start it down to -8F, with a JC Whitney dual voltage staring switch. It would supply 24 volts to the starter, and then go back to 12 volts after the car started.

That's the good old stuff! Such 'salt shaker' coils could also be found on tractors. I'm not sure, but I thought that it's a glow plug like the four in the engine?
The adjustment features for start up is reminiscent of the early automobiles. Even today's modern automobiles with fuel injection have a pressure priming function that is automatic. A well kept Mercedes. My father had an uncle with a 1962 model in rhd.

My dad had the exact same car back in the sixties. Same color same engine. He worked far away in Germany and in the weekend he drove back home to the Netherlands and always raced against Germans in big gasoline cars and had to win by doing crazy speeds in bends. The germans were chickens in the corners. They were only fast on the straight haha. But the result of the racing was that he had to change an engine every year. They couldn't cope with continueous high speed driving. I think it was an om621. I think he told me that these had only 3 main bearings. He also had 200 d heckflosse with the same type engine. The /8 om 615 and 616 were a lot better. They had 5main bearing cranck. Later he had a w123 with om617 that one was bulletproof.
