As a young person, I never really understood what was so special about these Mercedes & BMW vehicles. Looking back today, you really have to say that series like the W116 or SLR107 show more than just engineering at the highest level, at a time when other vehicles were pure tin cans. They reflect the time of a Germany & a world in which certain values still applied. For your money you got a vehicle that was carefully designed down to the last detail and everyone looked up with full respect. This solidity, the reliable quality of the old Bonn republic is reflected in every corner of this S-class. I can remember an experience in the middle of the 90s, it was the air show of the US base, open house and at the same time the last service of a friend there. He had fulfilled his childhood dream, a 450SEL 6.9. We drove to the site in the afternoon. An old US general saw us in the car and sat next to us on the stage. He said to my friend: If I had to explain to someone in America how Germany works and how its people think - I would show your Mercedes. Nothing impressed him more than this car in the mid-1970s.

That's what it would be like. That's how you built the best cars in the world. Even BMW, Volvo built quality at that time. It was so they became famous. At that time nobody came to Mercedes nearby. Japan, France's Italian cars did not hold the same measure. My dad had such a Mercedes. We went Eropa around and there was never any problem. He also had Ford and Opel and WW bubble but there were problem cars. Two brands that never left us on the road were Mercedes and Volvo. It was just filling up with gasoline and driving.

This is not totally true. Mercedes had not much concurrence in term of luxury, I agree, but they were not the only cars to be reliable. BMW, Volvo, Peugeot 404, 504. Toyota Land Cruiser, Hi-Lux or Celica in the 70's were really tough cars which were at least as reliable as a Mercedes. And all cars had 1 big problem by the time: rust. This was a main issue for Mercedes until recently.

Great footage! Wonderful to see an S class with manual. Think W140 was the last series with this option for the six cilinders

Dziima Wercigetorik

To me if the car is not an old Mercedes-Benz from 1972 to 1991, I don't want it

Lol. I love how the side mirror on the right (passenger) was 'optional' (the couple buying and driving the car out of the dealership).
