This would have been the chief rival to Ford for stationwagon duty! Nice three seat model, in great condition. Equipped the way most people would have had it...V8 and Powerglide. A nice way to see the USA, as Dinah Shore would have sung!

Bought a '65 Biscayne wagon same year same color in 1975. It was a 3-speed on the column, with power nothing. Solid steel dashboard. It was quite clean and I tried to keep that way. Caught a lot of flack from my friends for a "no smoking in the car" rule. (Too many people just automatically lit up in those days.)

Ah, the days of the metal dash! Smoking evolved over the years...movies gave it either a "tough guy" or a "sophisticated" air. Women were seen as "worldly" if they smoked, or they too had a "tough" appearance. Smokers originally asked permission, but that soon faded and permission was automatically assumed. Thanks! :) Jack

Wagons are always prettier than mini vans and SUVs. As a kid I recall seeing beautiful station wagons in the camp grounds.

Hey, Walter! I agree...the wagons continued the overall lines of the autos...suv's and vans were beings of their own. Thanks! :) Jack

A very, very nice wagon. It's too bad we can't see the interior all that well, but that's life.

From what we could see, everything about this car appeared top notch, A-1! A great example of a very nice and practical wagon! Thanks! :) Jack

This one looks in great shape. Starting in about 62 that gold color started to become quite popular. Station wagons really typified American suburbia in the late 50s and 60s. Great looking and very practical. In 65 a 327 mated to a Power-Glide was an excellent power train for the big Chevy. Throw your camping gear in the back, hitch up your little run-about and head for a secluded mountain lake. Nothing could be greater. :)

@@coolrides that's all to true. If the wagon isn't a tri five then most people didn't save them or think they are worthy, just like all the 4 door siblings. Besides my love for my beloved 3rd Gen camaros, I am a long roof fan and my dailys are all 3 burbans which most of them were crushed as were vans like my mid engine 60s chevy g10 everyone toys to get, but I also have a true modern day classic wagon an 06 dodge magnum wagon rt ,super sexy .sorry my phone unlike disliked and I had to use my tablet to relive the comment. Thanks for sharing ...I have a 2010 burban and want a 2022 burban rst but almost all new vehicles are hideous

I sure am glad that you are a fan....these vehicles need to be represented, for sure. The younger generation may sadly be unaware of how popular stationwagons and Suburbans have been in the history of transportation. They stand out in a parking lot...almost all the cars look the same! Thanks! :) Jack

LOL! The exuberance of giving rides to your friends as a newly licensed driver! Driving was actually a joy! If the truth be known, today it's more of a chore...something to be avoided if possible! BUT...if there were a new Corvette in the driveway, it might rekindle the experience! :D Thanks! :D Jack

@55points Great that this stationwagon brings back such great memories of family and fun times! I think that's how we associate this vehicle...packing up and taking the entire family to some destination! Hopefully for holiday! They made a fun movie about such adventures...National Lampoon's Vacation...and the Family Truckster driven by the hapless Clark Griswold! Thanks! :D Jack

Nice car there!..any of us that grew up with a large family will remember the family wagon..there were eight of us kids Jack..lol..and usually an extra along, and dads mom..3 seats and I still had to sit on a big brothers lap! the last one we had was a brand new 69 ponitac catalina, by then the two oldest were grown up and gone..I remember this car very well..saw it many many times..

@Seattlecarnut Hey, Jason! Chrysler minivans really began the minivan craze...Chrysler was not doing well as you remember, having taken the first government loan (which they repaid) so they had to work with what they had..and that was the K car chassis. They did a good job with it..but their attempts to make it all wheel drive were not very successful. The Astro/Safari did have the benefit of the more typical van layout of front engine, rear drive. Thanks! :) Jack

@Seattlecarnut Hey, Jason! I liken it to the preference people had to "McMansions" a few years ago..the bigger the better! Then the bubble burst! I think a similar thing has happened to the SUV market, now based on passenger cars rather than trucks. How is that different from a stationwagon..should have kept it all these years! Thanks! :) Jack

@Seattlecarnut Hey, Jason! Very practical vehicles...and they had the style of sedans! Thanks! :) Jack

@Seattlecarnut Hey, Jason! There's been a lot of speculation as to why minivans, the original replacement for wagons lost favor, and suvs became favored. Perhaps it was just time for something novel. Many have suggested that the high driving position gave people the impression of being more safe, more able to view traffic, more able to deal with large tractor trailers. However, with gas at its current price, the luster has started to evaporate from suvs. Thanks! :) Jack

@drewerz01 Hey, Mike! Yeah...I could agree on that Olds...upscale, but still great practical value! I think stationwagons are long overdue for more recognition...it used to be just the Chevy Nomad and the Pontiac Safari in the limelight..hopefully they will share it with lots more models! Thanks! :) Jack

That really sounds like this car was really more than a car to you and your family...it was part of the family! As such, you knew you could trust it to do your bidding...a very important requisite for a car! That even included hauling duties that the car, if it had a personality, would have been only too happy to do...a true friend! Thanks for sharing! :) Jack

@senorkaboom I'm glad this brought back pleasant memories for you! Your dad's driving experience with this car reminds me of my drive with a 1960 Chevy stationwagon...it did have a tendency to wander...I was using it to pick up materials. I can see the allure of the Tempest...smaller size and economy! Thanks! :) Jack

I just love these ! You just can't beat an old Chevy wagon. I would love to have a loaded one, with all available options including a 396 big block, Comfortron A/C, power everything, and an AM/FM, multiplex Delco radio. I wonder if there are any with bucket seats and a floor mounted shifter ?

Hey, Wilbur! Yes, these wagons are stylish yet versatile. I do believe an SS version of the wagon was available, so it's possible a floor mounted shifter was available! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet_Impala Thanks! :) Jack

There was no SS version available on any 4 door Chevy of this vintage. Bucket seats and floor shifting consoles were rarely offered on any 4 door vehicles during this year. Notable exceptions were the Chrysler 300 4 door hardtops and the 63 and 64 Ford Galaxie 500/XL 4 door hardtops and the 63 Mercury Monteray S-55 4 door hardtops.

Also you would be more likely to find a 66 Chevy Caprice Estate Wagon with those options that you described. Evev those wagons had an Impala interior with no upgrade option for a real Caprice interior available.

Beautiful, I love classic Station Wagons, Jack! My favourite is still the Oldsmobile Delta 88 Station Wagon, such a beautiful car :) ... Station Wagons don't get the recognition they deserve in my opinion :|

@Seattlecarnut Hey, Jason! I think one reason was poor quality control and another, lack of new, exciting models. K-car platform was the basis for all their new offerings as the older front engine rear drive cars faded away. But it was difficult to spruce up a K-car Chrysler as a luxury vehicle...I think they just didn't have a clear vision of what their new car lines should be. Just having the K-car platform was not enough. Thanks! :) Jack
