On "My Car Story" we're in the Suburbs of Phoenix AZ on 1-4-22.
We're looking at a 1965 Fiat Abarth 1000 OT Spider in Red Paint. The car comes with the factory inline 4 cylinder engine with Abarth engine upgrades.
The car's Owner is Chuck Maranto. Chuck’s had this car since 2021. Chuck shares he knew there were only about 30 produced from the Factory and when he saw it, he knew he had to purchase it.
ENJOY!

So why on Earth didn't the Zoolander movie crew use a standard Fiat 850 spider instead of wrecking an Abarth? A red 850 doing barrel rolls down the road would have looked exactly the same.

Nice car, I had the '67 Fiat 850 spyder bored over 900 cc's and bought the chromed headers with the dual tipped Abarth muffler. Car still struggled to get up to speed. Always thought it needed a slightly bigger engine and handling package. Got great gas mileage, though, and looked cool with the Jaguar style headlights.😁

Hi, Lou! Well, I'm not nearly as knowledgeable about foreign exotics as great American classics, and this is one I definitely never knew about, although I've heard about Abarth models of recent Fiats. Probably most other people don't either if only 30 or so were made. I do remember the X1/9 from the '70s, and looking at the rear of this Fiat, I can definitely see a resemblance between the two. Considering this car's quirks with the radiator cap, it's a lucky thing Chuck is a Fiat guy. Such a shame about his earlier one being totaled, but he is very fortunate to have found this one to replace it. BTW, the name Fiat stands for Fabbrica Italiana Automobili di Torino, or Italian Automobiles Factory of Turin. So thank you both for introducing us to this fun little toy, and ILL CYA in the next adventure!

This is a first for me. A Fiat Abarth sports car is quite unique. The rear engine is liquid cooled, rather than air cooled, making this car even more unique. European imports are completely out of my element, because my element is the American muscle car as well as the Detroit classics from the Big 3. This example is in the same league as the MG, Triumph, Austin Martin, and Ferrari, which I know very little about. Looks like it would be a blast to drive.

…Chuck Maranto is a charming guy, a Fiat encyclopedia and a great story teller…his story of the incorrect radiator cap is amazing… … these spyder convertibles were a rare sight on American roads, even when new…fue to the nearly microscopic list of authorized dealers or co-marketers… …but, as with all similar Euro roadsters in its class, it didn’t take a boatload of Lire to own one; but they sure delivered a ton of smiles per mile…just plain fun…

Oh well Lou I’m not necessarily a huge foreign car fan but since you do this so well I took a chance. I found it highly interesting that this man has owned two copies of a very rare car. Such a great little car and looks like a blast to drive!!! I really like the Abarth treatment especially the look of the headlights. The engine sounds really strong and very deep for a four cylinder car for sure and that exhaust header looks so cool how it dumps right into the muffler. Such a unique design to have a rear mounted engine and the radiator mounted at the rear as well, very unusual for 1965 I'm sure. Ya certainly can't go wrong with a red "rag top" sports car that's for sure!!! 🙂

Abarth did not touch the headlights. These were standard on Fiat 850 spiders until a 1968 restyling, and borrowed by another Bertone designer, Gandini, for the Miura. The rear location of the radiator was the rule on small European rear engined cars from Fiat, Simca, Hillman or Renault.
@theoldpcguy
@theoldpcguy Жыл бұрын
Fiats from the 1950s until the early 1970s were rear engined for the less expensive cars. The 600, 500 and 850 model ranges shared the same layout but the 850 engine rotates the opposite from the others.

@@halnwheels In one of my 850s, we put a 70 HP A112 Abarth engine. It was upgraded with coils in front, longer gear ratios and rear disk brakes. The original 50 HP engine struggled on highway ramps. I enjoy the improved torque and engine noise, but driving faster than before because would be suicidal. Carlo Abarth built a 850 Spider with some 130 HP. Giovanni Agnelli tried it, found it unsafe and vetoed it. The X1/9 on the contrary could handle an engine 2 or 3 times as powerful as the original. Fiat was not interested because it would overlap with its 124 and Lancia such as the Montecarlo but enthusiasts have done various swaps.

I had to finally sell my 903cc '73 project 850 because we were moving. It was also my second 850 spider (not an Abarth) ... Its rare to find a car that's as much fun to drive with such a small displacement. I actually dreamed of putting in a 1500cc honda engine (same direction of spin) but alas, no time to do it. Its too bad they destroyed an Abarth version in the Zoolander movie - and REALLY surprised they had to go to the states to find one!!!

Have had a couple of abarths, great little cars. The 1000 cc engines were actually the 850 engine stroked to 74mm with a different crank. But even the 850s had headers. Never had a overheating problem until a blown head gasket on my 1300/124 Abarth showed up. Also had a couple of Lombardi designed Otas, the basis for Abarth’s Scorpione. Of course the car to have was the Abarth 2000 made from the 850 coupe. Be interested it talking to you.

Nice car. The covered headlight Fiat 850s were sold in the US up until early 1968, I had a '68. I don't understand the donut spare that's not a thing in old Fiats. The pop riveted chasis tag should be in the engine compartment next to the one stamped into the body. That's a real red flag. There should be an electric Bendix fuel pump in the front compartment, pretty much standard on Abarths back then. The fake carbon fiber should just be removed. I'm pretty sure the gauges should be Jaeger, those look like stock Fiat. I should probably compare them to what's in my 1968 Coupe. The orginal engine was 843cc, not 850cc, they rounded up for the model number. The engine bay is missing the left floor pan, that effects cooling. The exhaust doesn't appear to be Abarth, if it was then the left floor pan would have been fitted to match the exhaust. The engine looks more like a Fiat 127 engine, it has the same spin on oil filter. You can also see the 127 steel oil pan where there should be a cast Abarth pan. The generator doesn't appear to be correct either, although it looks like it has a reproduction Abarth double pulley. The Abarth pulley had the same diameter for each belt. I'm no expert but I have owned more than 20 Fiats since the 1970s, 500, 600, 850, 124, 128, 2000 and a couple Abarths. I also knew Al Cosentino and Greg Schmidt. I bought one of Al's cars years ago and traded parts with Greg. This looks like a reproduction. Reproductions aren't bad but they shouldn't be presented as the real thing.

I agree but I think the engine is from a 127, it's a more common conversion since there are more of them around.

I'm afraid somebody was scammed in this story. Firstly, car badge is a fake. Roma 31xxxx is a badge number registered before 1958. Italian car badge is strictly coupled with the original chassis number and cannot be transferred from a car to another. Roma 31xxxx badges were registered from February 1958 to may 1958. No way this badge could be associated to a 7 year newer car. My very first car was a MG Midget Mk.1 produced in Q4 1960, imported in Italy in 1961 and registered in Rome in May 1961 with badge number Roma 475xxx. If the car details are at the same level of the badge, somebody could assume that it's a fake.

Yes, this does not appear to be genuine, weird that an expert could be duped this bad.

My brother's girlfriend had one of these BITD and it was blue, she bought it brand new and her father was a big Fiat nut so he could work on it if it ever broke down, it wasn't an Abarth though

Siempre he pensado como seria un 850 spider con motor Abarth 1000. Le he puesto un turbo de 7 lbs. Es igual de potente?

That Fiat is neat-oh. I bet Corvettes seem to tower over this car.

every damn time a car (or a cute animal for that matter) is featured in a movie, it gets destroyed...what is it about movie people needing to trash the precious? I almost didn't go to see Gran Torino cause I knew the car would be smashed up...pleasantly surprised when it didn't

I'm surprised they actually destroyed the car! I remember in "Duel", it was said they used toys for the big crash of the Peterbilt and Valiant at the end.
