The thing is, most all Ford products from that era had their gas tanks positioned way too far back, too close to the rear bumper...Many rear-end collisions resulted in fires, and Ford got sued a lot...stubbornly, they continued to place their gas tanks in a vulnerable position...a classic case being the first generation Mustangs! Even Lee Iaccoca eventually admitted to the horrible flaw, and recommended that people should stop restoring those older Mustangs. Too bad, as these Fords and Mercs from that era were nice cars!

My Dad bought the '66 Parklane. He loved the Lincolns of this period, but felt he could get enough of "a Lincoln" with the Mercury, and he was right. I was 9 then, and miss that car. I miss the time period too, let's be honest. I'm glad he isn't around now to see the utter shit show I'm living in now. He'd be horrified about what's happened to Canada going into ruin also.

Mom bought 5 different thunderbirds from 61-95 because she just couldn't justify in her head the extra cost of the Lincolns. I remember her always looking at the lincolns and saying she should have bought one of those. Funny.

Jay, you really should have mentioned that that particular Mercury appeared to have no power steering, no power brakes and a 3 speed manual trans. I don't think I have ever seen a Mercury (full size) with a manual trans and no P/S. On the other hand, with a 390 and stick shift, I'll bet that car could haul some a$$. In fact, that car seemed to have almost no options at all. Maybe the outside mirror and the AM radio. I have always liked the 65 and 66 Mercury styling. Oh, and Mariner is pronounced "mare-in-er" I enjoy your vids more and more, keep it up!

I like the 1964 dash better. WYR 1: Pontiac Bonneville. Great design. WYR 2: Galaxie 500. I agree with you that I can't recall ever seeing one of these Mercurys, even back in the day; guess it never made an impression. I do recall the Mercurys with the backsloped rear window; one of a friend's mothers drove one and the window would go down, which was a cool feature.

Always thought that was a cool feature Showed chloe and the face she made was priceless “that car rear window goes down” I was like “press a button and it goes up and down with the switch” I hope I can get her into classic cars

"in the Lincoln Continental Tradition" according to the vintage 1965 ad, I love those big Mercurys from the 57's to thec78's, 65 and 66 Park Lane hits the mark nice luxurious cars . Neighbor had a 65 Monterrey 2 door sedan loved the style of that cat especially the front, they should have offered hide away lights on those like the 67 Cougar. Glad you showed the ad with the "wrist twist" steering.First choice 65 Sport Fury with fender skirts , second 65 Mercury Park Lane .

I'm pretty sure that the wrist twist got axed because if the power steering pump died or the belt came off, I really doubt that you could easily steer it, if you even could at all. I'm old, I remember when that was first invented.

I was a big fan of the 65 cars in particular the whole GM line, Cadillac for example in my eyes how they incorporated the styling cues of the 55 Cadillac,but I gone sideways.I also agree "Stock Rocks". Anyway I have always been a fan of the 65 Mercury Fullsize cars and really liked the Parklane woody wagons.I will also add the 65 to 68 Mercury Fullsize line was the prettiest cars of the Ford line of that time,and more than held their own against its medium luxury competition at that time and their styling is immune to time,those cars were great road cars,dependable for the most part , pretty well screwed together,and extremely comfortable Comforta

1956 Belair unusual color combo…silver w/ white top… Dad always said it was his favorite car of all time!...Mom ran into the back of a bus at slow speed…totaled the car though…said I was horsing around in the backseat…lol…no one was hurt and the policeman let me sit in the police car and run the siren to stop my crying!!…1965 Impala, which I thought was a great car…Dad took it to a high school auto shop class for a “free” tune-up…never ran the same!!!... 1970 Impala by which time GM quality was in decline…I’m always looking for ’56 and ’65 chevy episodes on “What It’s Like”!!!!

I remember the " ride engineered" badging just above the glove box.. Also the commercial " Lincoln/Mercury the sign of the cat" . Pillar lights, I think they called them " courtesy lights" or reading lights. My father used to say that Mercury was the working man's Lincoln.

I owned a 1959 Rambler American with that 3 on tree arrangement. It was OK with me--until it broke down! AMC quality was suspect back then.

I totally agree about the boring styling. But this example would be a fun car to drive with the 390 Marauder and the three on the tree. I personally love big luxury coupes and I always enjoyed sawing away on the three on the tree. WYR I'd choose the 1965 Sport Fury and the 1965 Galaxy XL.

Hi Jay!: You are right, you almost NEVER see those Mercury's! Back in the day, there were a few, but since. . . Like this car because it is VERY similar to the 1966 Ford Galaxie 500XL My Mom and dad drove in the 1970's. Ours had the 390 but with the dual-range cruise-o-matic with a really long console with the chrome shifter sticking out of it. There were two drive modes on that one. The owner's manual suggested putting it the one that had a little round green light next to it that came on when that gear was selected. My Dad preferred the regular drive for some reason. The car was a two-door hardtop in that interesting color Emberglo. The interior was emberglo with a cream colored trim. The non chrome dash parts were body color as well as the rear of the console. Had a LONG flat compartment opened by a chrome button aft of the shifter. I guess you could put maps or something in there, it wasn't very deep. Spent a lot of time in the back seat as a kid on vacations and it was pretty comfortable for me. Liked the front bucket seats pretty well, too. Unfortunately the Galaxie got traded in for a spiffy new 1977 Granada 2 door! That one was a six cylinder with a Manual transmission on the floor! 3 speed with overdrive. But, I digress. WYR#1 Going PLYMOUTH on this one because I lusted after one of those in high-school! More big-block goodness! #2 gotta go Galaxie here, because of the fond memories I had of our '66.

My father bought bought one of these for my mother in 1968. It was white with a red interior and could pass anything on the road except a gas pump. Hers had spoke wheel covers with a 3 spoke center and a red "Merc" head. I blew the motor up when I was seventeen and my father made me put some of my cash to help buy mom another car (69 Impala). I learned to hate that car working on it (thus my love for Chevy's). I have the VHS tape somewhere of that car commercial you shown.

I was 10 years old in 1965 but already an American car mini Gearhead, and I do remember seeing these Mercurys on the road. By 1965, Ford was paring Mercury closer to Lincoln than other Fords. To me the front styling is in more of a Lincolnesck look, but with much less style. I think those sharp turn indicators are a little to stark looking, again giving the front fenders more of the squared off Lincoln look. I do like the taillights, the 2 split lights vertical taillights work to keep that square look going. But these taillights are very Mercury. Mercury liked to add the bright trim inside the lenses to give it a more dressed up look, and I do like that. I like black interiors, as you said, it makes for a more cozy feel, but at the same time is very formal looking. Ford offrred black interior on most of their cars in the 60s, I like that, black interior goes with any exterior color. I would say I actually don't like the very boring dash, which is unusual because Ford always had very nice and detailed dashboards in all their cars of the 60s and 70s. This one does not fit the Lincoln Mercury style, although the seats are very nice. The Breezeway rear window is a nice feature, I'm surprised it didn't show up in more cars of the era. So, between the 64 and 65, I vote for the 64. It has a lot more traditional style both inside and out. The 64 dash is very well done, nice to look at. One of my uncles had a white with burgundy interior 9 passenger Colony Park wagon. It was a beautiful car. He had that car well into the 90s and it really held up well. To answer your last question, between the Mercury, the Plymouth and the Pontiac, I vote for the 65 Pontiac Bonneville or Grand Prix. To me and to many others, the entire Pontiac line including the Lemans/GTO, are easily one of the best looking cars, not only of the 60s, but of all time. Everything about the 65 full-size Pontiacs is absolutely gorgeous. They are big and powerful looking yet very elegant both inside and out. A beautifully detailed dashboard and luxurious interior all around. I love your reviews of my favorite cars. Keep them coming.

A guy brought one to my garage 12 years ago. The engine ran rough and lacked power because of old leaking vacuum hoses. The entire air conditioning system ran on vacuum so there were many hoses that had to be replaced. After that I found that half of the vacuum operated actuators had leaking diaphragms that were not available and it was a big job to repair the actuators. All of them, because the next one might not last long. Otherwise it needed only a full brake overhaul.

Woo Hoo it’s Mercury day!!!! One of my aunts had a 1965 Park Lane 4dr with the Marauder roof. They were the wealthy relatives, so I was duly impressed with this luxury vehicle … and my aunt always referred to it as her Park Lane in kind of a snooty way. I think they are beautiful, though the interior is prettier than the exterior. Another of my aunts - my favorite one - had a 1965 Comet Caliente coupe, white with a red interior. That was my favorite car in the entire family. Oh how I wish I had that car. The same aunt would give me a car for college - a 1979 Ford Fairmont. I did not love that car. In scenario 1, I would take the Bonnie. My mom drove a 1966 Bonnie, and I do love those cars (so I guess I lie when I say it’s always the Merc). In scenario 2, I’m definitely taking the Merc!!! I flipped out when I saw a Merc in my feed today. Great episode Jay!!! Made me so happy!!! Thanks!!!!

1965. The dark days of the heavy hand of Bob McNamara were over at FoMoCo and Mercury left behind being a "Fancy Ford" and returned to being a "Little Lincoln"...

The Mercs kinda followed Lincoln styling cues. The Mercs had a few more flairs over the conservative slab-sided lincolns. As a San Francisco "talking head" said a few years ago when reporting about a Korean airliner crash in the Bay area, "Ho Lee Fuk"! I've never seen a full-size Merc, especially a Park Lane, with a manual transmission, and a column shifter to boot. I always considered the Park Lane Mercury's flagship. But I seem to remember one of the 1965 full-sized Mercs having a Lincoln V8 available. The car was referred to as a "baby Lincoln". A family friend had one. It could have been a '66. My best friend's parents had a '67 4dr. Park Lane. I don't remember for sure what engine it had, but it was either a 390 or 428. I thought it was the coolest car. In '67 full-sized Mercs went to kind of like coke bottle side panels. That car was a forest green with a matching interior. It was originally, from new, my best friend's father's company car. A couple of years later, when it was time for a new company car, the '67 got handed down to my best friend's mother. It would be considered a tragic mistake today, but the car she retired was a '58 or '59 Plymouth Fury 2 dr. hardtop. It had seen better days, but I remember when she would take off, a stream of smoke shot out from under where the engine was. Later in life, I found out that the older pre-PVC engines had downdraft tubes, and that was where the smoke was coming from. That meant that the engine was shot. Oh, well. I love the videos of the mid-to-late 60's cars. Maybe because that was around the time that I started noticing the different cars. The mid-60's car are probably the coolest to me!

From what I recall the interior was black and the exterior was the deeper burgundy. It also had chrome wheels I think I was 6 or 7 years old then and had Mustang and Cougar fever.

The front grille and bonnet (hood) look a lot like the British Ford Cortina GXL MkIII from the 70s. American styling was influential at that time with Ford, Vauxhall and Rootes cars taking inspiration from across the pond.

This 65 Park Lane is not run of the mill. Most were automatics and with power accesories. The original owner likely bought it more for performance. I owned a 64 Park Lane Marauder Conv. from..'69-'95. Although it was not maketed as such it was a factory built muscle car that would get up 'git. Restored the car in the late 70's, made several modifications to it for the sake of handling and safety Primarily front disc brakes and heavy up of the suspension. The mid 60's big Merc's are a classy ride with muscle too, what a cruiser. Sold it to a fellow, after all these years it's still owned by the same family. .

The semi fastback roof was called Marauder. Made it confusing as the top engine choice was also badged Marauder. You could get a Mercury Park Lane S-55 Marauder Marauder. Confusing enough? Maybe so. 1965 was a total redesign, reengineering of the full sized models at Ford/Mercury, General Motors, and Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth. Everything except some carry over engines and transmission.

Hi Justin, nice video! You see a large difference from the 1964 to 1965 full-size Mercury(s) as you will also see on the 1964 to 1965 full-size Ford(s). In 1965 the Ford Motor Company came out with a brand new frame, body shell, wheel base and track for these cars. The inside rear-view mirror is mounted to the windshield too high, or adjusted too high. The glass windshield washer bottle is "Ford Rotunda" brand washer fluid concentrate that you add with water to the plastic windshield washer tank. Please reply. Dave...

For WYR, it's the Pontiac Bonneville, and the Galaxie 500 XL. I used to see these out on the road, but never that many. I think, compared to the '64 model, the styling isn't that interesting, except for the taillights. I would have to agree, the mid-sixties box styling did it no favors, although this is a nice specimen. I wish they didn't eliminate the breezeway window later that decade, just like I wish they didn't eliminate vent windows after 1968.

Always been a fan of the big Merc, and it was the Parklane's return that started Mercury back to where it should have been - an upper medium car. 57-60 Mercs were their own car, but then McNamara rationalized everything and the 61-62 especially were just Fords. Whie the 65 was totally redesigned and much more modern, I really prefer the 64. The 65 took rectaliner all the way to boring (styling?), becoming a little better with the 66 - with a Merc exclusive 410 cube engine. Full flowing in 67-68 and then the glory years through 74. The Park Lane would be gone by the time a Marquis Brougham was a serious rival to the New Yorker and Electra, (as it was in 59). Parklane it laid the groundwork. 65 though was just a llittle 'off' - even the dash missed the mark. Imagine that column mounted stick was pretty darn rare in a Parklane; most of the manuals in this series would have been with the sport package and floor mounted. Hey! there was nothing "phantom" about Ali's famous punch...you actually showed what happened there. Ali threw a short, but very accurate punch, that caught Liston right on the chin!...It clearly was a quality punch, and down went Liston. However...many people feel that Liston-for whatever reason--purposely stayed down, for the count. IMO, he just realized that Ali would continue to beat him like a drum, so he decided to no longer participate!...I do not believe that he was bribed to take a fall. That punch by Ali was right on the beezer, and most anyone would have gone down from that punch. So why would a proud guy like Liston, want to be badly beaten around?

One fine Saturday my dad came home with a brand new 65 monterey convertible. It's funny- I still remember that smell of hot rubber and roasting engine paint when he opened the hood. It was a decent car, it never really gave him any problems... The '66 facelift was a much better looking merc though.

J... thank you! I have been having an epically shitty week at home, and here you are posting big Chryslers, wagons and Mercurys to bring a bit of a bright spot into it! Try comparing the '65 T-bird to this, you'll see more of a similarity, and the "pillar" lights are called "courtesy lamps" 😉 Mercurys for some reason, were never big on rear seat room. Every big Merc I've had, the rear seat room paled in comparison to it's GM and Chrysler counterparts. It made up for it in ride and trunk space... I've always said there's a reason mobsters drove Lincoln/Mercury cars... you can fit 5 bodies, intact, easily in the trunk... LOL... Interestingly, my '09 Grand Marquis (LS Ultimate) has a "Parklane" package, from what I gather is a Parklane decal, a special C-pillar badge and half cabrio roof with B-pillar coach lights. WYR: 1) and 2) Do I REALLY need to say? 🙂 Thanx again, J for making an Olde Pharte's week a bit better... you truly rock!

I wanted to add one more thing, somebody in the comments made reference to the Pontiac Bonneville,and I wanted to add that in my eyes the sixty seven,and sixty eight Pontiac had one of the nicer looking instrument panels of that time that looks great today,as always another great presentation.

The red Mercury is a very low option car for a Park Lane. I have a 65 Montclair with way more options on it Power Steering power brakes,am fm radio tilt wheel, automatic transmission.

I really like almost all of the the different auto designs of the'60's including this one, and I think your descriptives nailed it, they do seem have a bit of a blount look, and as you said ,boring in that way. I do like the front turn signal lights, and tail lamps, which do add alot of interest, imo anyway. The interoir looks great and I'm sure feels as good as it looks! All of the WYR's are each great in their own way,( the Polara, in the convertible only) for me). I like the hulking,i powerful look of the Bone ne ville😊, but the beautiful racy look of the Sport Fury, would probably be my pick, and the Galaxy in the second scenario. 😎

When I was a kid, m dad bought a new 65 Mercury Monterey with the 'Breezeway' rear window. But his had the regular gas version of the 390, with a 2V carb that was rated at 250HP. Sp that engine was not available in the Park Lane, then?

Glad you could get a Marauder! 5:54 The '65, Mercury went to '61 Lincoln Continental inspired styling. If you'll look at the rear of the '64 Merc, that is almost from the '59 Lincoln. WYR: -1- Pontiac -2- Ford

Very cool jay one of my favorite cars I actually had a 66 parklane marauder 2dr fast back with the 428 super marauder. I personally think mercury cleaned up the design in 66 changing grills lighting roof lines the 66 fastback was arched and seemed to melt into the rear fenders/trunk etc all for the better. One cool little detail on the dashboard you didn’t notice was the mercury man emblem on right it actually lights up and really looks cool and the instruments appear to float with the backlighting much like the Chrysler’s of the late 50’s- early 60’s. This was a bare bones car for a parklane as they could be highly optioned with power everything 150mph speedometer and tachometer , but still very cool, I’ll take the Pontiac and the XL please

Exceedingly strange to see a Park Lane without power steering, power brakes or automatic. That was the luxury model of the upscale Mercury brand. I would love to know who originally ordered it that way and why.

I had a friend who bought a 64 Breezeway 2 door that was a 390 two barrel engine for like 200 dollars back in the 80's and it was in great condition until he got ahold of it. Didn't the 65 Model also have a 410 for an engine option? Always wanted a 65 to 68 one of those. I will pick the Chrysler products.

I’m not sure about the 410 I didn’t see it in the advertisement pieces I’m pretty sure the 410 was used from 66 to 67 the lesser cars had a Detuned 390

Honestly I found conflicting information on that because they listed their engines as marauder engines.. I couldn’t find anything in advertisement that said anything different so I kind of sort of left that part out any time that I’m not 100% or at least 90% I just leave it out because it could be anything

I am with you on those ridiculous tires/rims and that jacked-up high-profile look. And “stern” is indeed the rear. Bow: front. Stern: rear. And a “standard” transmission in a Mercury? Maybe that’s where the “standard” jargon came from in describing transmissions. Clutch and shift were standard, automatic was an option.

I've always liked the boxier straighter look of the mid-60's Ford products, which this exhibits well. I've never seen one of these IRL either, and have not seen one of the big Fords with a clutch either. My, what big pedals you have grandma! Those old cast-iron transmissions eat abuse with glee unlike today's lightweight aluminum stuff which 'goes boom' at great cost if you even look it it sternly. With a torquey 390 boat anchor up front you needed that. Maybe too much 'chrome' embellishment (actually anodized aluminum) but not greatly so it's a nice looking car indeed. WYR the Sport Fury was my first regularly-driven car, but the Pontiac is beautiful and faster with the right engine options. And Dad bought a 65 Galaxy 500 (not XL) new, which we picked up in Colorado during a cross-country trip, trading off the 63 Galaxy I loved for it. Not sure how all that was arranged but I remember having to swap all the luggage over in the dealer's lot then hitting the road again right away. Still, even with the memories the Park Lane is a sweeter car in every way. Still some quirks in the audio, are you using the new mic? Great vids, keep 'em coming!

I thought the 1965 Park Lanes looked rather bland compared to other cars of the same year. Even my dad's '65 Galaxie which he purchased new , looked more interesting than this one. I also preferred the styling of the 1964 Park Lane, and its dashboard looked way better. My cars of choice here would be the 1965 Sport Fury and Polara.
