It was totaled then buried after the tragic accident at the drag strip. According to another video of the Petty's sold it with the agreement that it never be rebuilt.

Actually I believe they expanded their shop and had to dig it up to pour the foundation. The guy that dug it up asked if he could have it but he couldn't restore it. I can't believe this car has any original parts because it was totally destroyed.

I actually got to wax this car when I was 15 years old, My neighbor Howard Parks in Atkins, VA bought this car in 1967 after Richard had quit drag racing, and went back to NASCAR. It looked exactly as it appears here in this video. Howard owned the local community grocery store in Atkins, and after he closed the store for the evening, he'd go fire up 43 Jr., and give it a quick test blast across his parking lot a couple of times. I lived about a half mile away, and would hear the awesome noise, and jump on my bicycle, and furiously pedal my way up to the store. By then he had shut it off, but you could still smell the racing fuel, and burnt rubber from his test session hanging in the summer air. The aluminum fuel injection stacks would be cracking and popping from their cool-down. For a teen like me, it was absolutely the most awesome thing I'd even experienced! Howard set a world record with it before finally letting it go after only one season of racing. He said it was "too much car" for him to control on the track, with it's short wheelbase. My dad, who owned a machine ship just two doors down the road for Howard's grocery store, actually welded up a new drive shaft for the car, after Howard twisted one off in competition at Bristol that year.

I believe that is the second 43 Jr. The first 43 Jr. was totaled in a wreck at a Dallas Georgia dragstrip. That car's wreck sadly. resulted in the death of 7 year old, Wayne Dye. The reason I know this is because Wayne was my second cousin and his casket wast the first casket I ever carried. So, I believe this is not the original 43 Jr. I'll add, I've always been a RP fan so no ax to grind here.

Dear Lou, Yes I do Lou, I used to work for a person in Antioch IL, and that's where MR Beswick used to bring his PRO MOD car in for service.And in the early 80's I worked for very famous family in the driveline and brakes manufacture. You name it they made it, That's the earliest time that I can remember of Arnie. He is one of the GREATEST DRAG RACERS to live. I was talking with him down at INDY one year, and a 8 year old chasing a person to sign his autograph, and this very famous person fell on his face, and this person was racing for a great big oil company, Arnie walks over and signs his autograph for the 8 year old! He's a man with all class. All the work you guys did, and the money raised, You are in a class all your own. Job well done Lou!!!

That 426 Hemi is massive, but there’s still tons of room in the engine bay of a small car of the time.

Glenn, this is the second 43 jr, the first crashed. It was called "43jr OUTLAWED"IT had 2 4 barrel carbs, a standard wheelbase. The second one pictured here had the Hillborn fuel injection and an altered wheelbase.....Richard Petty literally created the "funny car" genre.....I am actually building a 1/25 scale model of the first car.

There must be a dozen of these Petty drag cars out there, but this one was build by Petty's shop, that must make it the original, WTF. Richard was lucky he was racing in GA when that boy was killed by Richard, anywhere else he would have been charged with manslaughter.

Richard raced two Barracudas on 1965. This is the the second car, 43jr. Built by Petty Enterprises and restored by Petty's Garage. No WTF.
@ThomasDSullivan8 жыл бұрын
The darkest time in this car's short time on the drag strip, came on FEB 28th,1965 when a 8 year old boy from Austell, GA was standing hand in hand with his father. With in a blink of an eye, The eight year old was dead, And seven others were hurt, including the boys father, One of MR Petty's wheel assembly came off the race car.and do you know we still have the same problem 50 years later.The rear wheel assembly came off and hit one of the drag racer wife on the return road,And if you were watching that film, they only showed the team owner hugging the driver?What about the family that just lost there mother??Please tell me I'm WRONG

Dear Lou, Please do not take that information Lou the wrong way, In know way was I trying to hurt you, or the other gentlemen. Oh yeah the other person that Richard was racing on that sad day, was, Arnie "The Farmer" Beswick!!This year at RT66 Nationals in Chicago your car was on display. It was so HOT 90*/80% Humid, I've would have love to talk to Arnie, When in the future you have the time, get hold of the Farmer, he love's history, and still live's in Illinois, He is one of greatest DRAG RACER"S to ever live.# 42jr is a GEM. THANK YOU FOR SHOWING IT TO ALL OF US LOU!!!

Sometimes (in driving cars) we have the best intentions, and the wrong result happens, and yet I know God is in Control and we pray for His grace knowing all things work out for the Glory of God. In the end we find out His plan, and it's always better then my plan :-) Changing topics, do you know Arnie, and does he still have any of his cars? Lou
@43jr428 жыл бұрын
This is not that car. The car involved in the accident wasn't raced again. This is a different car and it first raced on March 28th, 1965.

Hey Lou. I was just trying to help you, the car owner, All the people that work for the Petty family, where told what to say Lou, And yes Mr Petty did not go down any drag-strip for the rest of his life Lou. You have a PC of history an put it to bed Lou. Your brother an your self did a GREAT JOB on it!! I take my hat off for you two, and can't wait to see what's next. A job well done
