This week on the WorkBench I am building the 1965 Pontiac Bonneville Fast Back Sport Coupe by AMT. This kit has been wonderful to build with nearly zero flaws. I initially had painted it with the Pastel Blue ColorShift paint but couldn’t get it to lay down really well. So, after stripping the body three times I decided to go with a paint that I had never used before. The color is called Blue Chrome and is manufactured by Rustoleum. It’s a beautiful color that layed down so smoothly that it really didn’t need a clear coat but I decided to use the remaining Tamiya clear that I had purchased for this build anyway. The front and rear bumpers were a little bit of a pain to seat in place and left gaps between them and the body.
I hope that you enjoyed watching this video as much as I did building the kit.

That's a beautiful build! I just got one of these at Ollie's (add me to the list!) and thought I was going to build it stock with fender-skirts, but, just for fun. I also painted all of the custom body panels and, right now, I have it mocked-up all lowered down with the custom wheels and white-walls, side-pipes, fender-skirts, mild custom front end and full custom tail, and it might just get built that way!

Thank you! A little advice to you when you get around to building yours... The little piece that goes between the grille... Make sure to grab that before you start painting so that it is painted at the same time as the rest of the body. I totally forgot to paint that at first and had to go back to the booth to get it right. Other than that this was an easy build. Have fun!

Yours turned out very nice! I built this kit over thirty years ago when it was released as a Prestige series kit. I recently bought one again for the decals to complete a 65 Grand Prix. Like almost all Round 2 models that they have released since acquiring the molds. They opened all the runners and you get parts that sometimes aren't in the instructions and don't seem to make since. In 1965 AMT made a convertible promo using some of the same mold for the 3 n1 kit. That's why it come with a convertible boot/cover, engine insert, and the convertible interior. Don't know if you realised, but typical of AMT/MPC/Johan promos at the time this is a convertible interior.

Thank You! I never owned on of these until recently. I remember seeing them when they were in the Prestige Series but for some reason it wasn't appealing to me at that time. I was unaware that this was at one time offered as a convertible. I have a second one of these that I might just give it a go as a convertible. They do, after all, provide the boot for it!

Thank You! The blue chrome came out really well. The only downside was that it wasn't quite glossy enough for me. That's why I applied the clear to it. I just shot the body of a future build with the red chrome. The can color is misleading. It envisions a bright red metallic but it isn't bright red, it's more of an orange than a red. The color is really nice but it the finish came out more of a matte than a gloss (that's why I like clear coats). I also have a can of the bronze chrome but haven't tested that out yet. These cans, so far, don't spray like the 2X cans. These come out as a light mist in comparison. I've sworn off of the 2X cans. The paint just comes out to heavy for my liking.

When I found this Blue Chrome, I thought that this would look perfect in that color. The interior had me a bit confused for a minute. I had it completely painted and decided to go a different way with it. Stripped it and re-painted it to what you see in the video. I think it turned out better this way. Thanks for watching!

Nice build! Engine compartment filler and top boot originated from the model’s promo model roots. One of the carried-over issues from the original is the 4-speed trans on the engine with the A/T quadrant on the console. The ‘stock hubcaps’ are Pontiac’s iconic 8-lug aluminum wheels, quite advanced for 60 years ago. If you’d look at the instructions you’d see the custom front and rear pans. What else would they be? What does a ‘65 Bonneville look like? Having a little ‘beforehand’ reference on the subject car would help your presentation a LOT.

Thanks! I have had to make this same adjustment on several builds here lately for whatever reason. I think that all cars of the 60's, 70's and 80's should at least sit level or maybe slightly lifted in the rear. Growing up in that era and being a gear head I have a thing about the way a car should sit. Squatted in the rear is a no go in my book.

Brother, I have a story about this kit. It was purchased with the intention of having me build it up as an unpainted display prototype of the full custom version on the front of the box. I agreed to do it, as a 30+ year model builder it was going to be the easiest model job I'd ever done. The basic car is very nice, but the deluxe custom options DO NOT FIT the body, and require hours of fitting and filling. It took 3 days to complete, due to the custom interior being a chop job (I had to cut the seats loose and switch sides, left seat on right side, vice-versa) to get the custom center console and shifter installed. The custom engine option with the through-the-hood intake was another issue as well, as the engine sets crooked within the engine bay, and with the hood cutout removed the whole deal was so askew it's shameful. Despite the finished car being a Franken-machine, they responded with "It actually went together?" I was disappointed in having presented such a bad finished piece, not knowing that there was really no expectation of it actually being done. I was only 1 of about a dozen platform testers to actually build that version, and I had plenty to say about the deluxe custom parts being so poorly done. I have the car back now, and I grin every time I look at it. The way you built it looks really good, but the box cover version is next to impossible without an anxiety-inducing amount of modding and clamping. Although I don't have too many good things to say about this kit, you did an incredible job with it. I'm impressed. 👍🏻
@scaleautoguysworkbench
@scaleautoguysworkbench Жыл бұрын
Thank You! I almost went with the custom parts build but decided that I liked the stock version better. Sounds like you had your hands full building that. Their reply to you of "It actually went together?" was a hoot! Like they knew that it wouldn't and you blew them away when you presented it to them. I love beating peoples expectations of my abilities. They think that they have played a joke on me then I prove them wrong. When I was a young lad and still active duty I had a few E6 and E7 types try to pull stuff on me that they thought I would fail at. I loved the look on their faces when I proved them wrong. I actually have another one of these kits laying around. I might just try to build it with the custom parts next time... I love a good challenge... Thanks for watching!

@@scaleautoguysworkbench Painted up and detailed the full custom version would look phenomenal, for sure. 👍🏻 There's a trim accessory that runs along the lower rocker panel, which can fit nicely, but needs inner material removed and then held in place at an angle. To compensate for the misalignment of the engine intake and the cutout in the hood, I trimmed one edge of the cutout. I managed to hide 99% of the problems, but oh my goodness there are plenty. 🤣 Yes sir, those military days were some unique times, I had the benefit of being raised by a Gunny-turned-Staff Sergeant... 🤣 My old man was a Vietnam vet. Going into MCRD Diego wasn't so bad, my old man was easily 17 times meaner than any Drill or Gunny I dealt with. Every time they started screaming, I'd just think to myself "You don't know my old man!" Crazy booger volunteered to go back to Nam twice! 🤣 The only good story I have from field combat training was during the bayonet course. We were supposed to affix our bayonet, yell like a madman, and run up through the course stabbing targets... Simple enough... The blade on the training bayonet broke and I didn't want the Gunny thinking I was a quitter, so I just kept stabbing the targets with no blade. The gunny broke character, both hands on his knees, laughing so hard he was crying. I can't repeat what he said, but my nickname throughout was Bulldog. Have a good one, bud! 👍🏻 OOOOORAH!

Sorry to see your color shift paint didn't work out. I have been using craft paint on occassion and have had times where it went on perfectly and times where it wouldn't work no matter what. Do you use a bit (3-4 drops) of glycerin? I found that putting a bit of it in the mix with the water or washer fluid (either one) helps.
@scaleautoguysworkbench
@scaleautoguysworkbench Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip. I haven't tried adding Glycerin to the mix yet. My daughter has some that she adds to her soaps that she makes. I'll have to get some from her and give that a try. 99% of the time I have zero issues with craft paints. For some reason this particular color just wouldn't go on and flatten out. When it dried it felt like 60 grit sandpaper. Hopefully, the Glycerin trick will help out. Thanks for watching!

@scaleautoguysworkbench
@scaleautoguysworkbench Жыл бұрын
Thank you for the sub! I haven't done one of those types of videos yet. I have done a promo on a Harbor Freight airbrush and I don't remember if I showed how to break that down and clean it. My go to airbrush is a Paasche Model H single action airbrush. I only spray acrylic craft paints and clears through it. So, I don't know how I could demonstrate cleaning lacquers or enamels out of it. I would imagine using the exact same techniques only using a solvent instead of hot water. Yeah, I'll look into that. I may post that up as a bonus video on an off week. Thanks for the suggestion. By the way, as far as air pressure goes... It varies depending on the medium that your attempting to spray. As a good rule of thumb, the thicker the medium (paint) the more air pressure is required. So, if your not thinning down the lacquer before pushing it through your airbrush, you may want to give that a try. I typically use around 19psi and a .3-.5 nozzle when pushing thinned craft paint. Your paint should be about the consistency of skim milk before you spray. Good Luck!

What happened to the colorshift blue for the body?
@scaleautoguysworkbench
@scaleautoguysworkbench Жыл бұрын
I couldn't get the colorshift paint to cooperate and lay down smooth. I painted and stripped that body three different times and finally gave up on it. I was disappointed that I couldn't get the paint right. I'm not sure what the reason is for this problem. I used three different thinning agents, three different primers and two different spray nozzles on the airbrush and still it came out rough and blotchy. I even played around with the air pressure a little and it just wasn't working. It is a new to me bottle of paint straight from the shelf at Hobby Lobby so I can't even guess what its age is. Normally, I never have problems with this brand of paint. It usually lays right down smooth as silk. This felt more like 100 grit sand paper. I even tried to smooth it out by lightly sanding it but it change the appearance to the point that it no longer did the color shift. I worked on this paint for a good three weeks and came up empty. I found the Blue Chrome at the local Meijer store and decided to give it a try. It wasn't the way I wanted it to be but it still turned out great IMHO.

It very well may have been as that was a Bonneville as well and was a kit during the AMT/ERTL days. I don't think it should have been, if it were correct. It gets confusing with Pontiacs because, although you could get a 421 motor and (I think) bucket seats in a Bonneville, the '2 + 2' that those came in was based on a Catalina.

@@wilburross9709 Both of those cars were remarkably similar in body styling and thus the confusion between the two. There were subtle differences with the taillights and body side moldings. @wilburross9709 8 ай бұрын
@@scaleautoguysworkbench I did some research to confirm a suspicion and it turns out there was a wheelbase difference too. Of the full sized Pontiacs those years, the Catalina was the smaller cheaper one, and the Bonneville was the longer more expensive one. Don't know how that translates into 1/25 scale or if AMT even bothered to be that accurate. They were making the promo models for the auto makers, though, so maybe they did bother to be that accurate!
