Man, you really had me on the edge of my seat there. Especially when you had that engine about 4 feet off the floor. Why don't you get a friend to help once in a while? But fortunately everything worked out. :-) I'm pretty sure you already know that you can remove the lower engine compartment apron to facilitate easier removal of the engine.

I use a chain hoist to lift the engine onto my stand. I have a 6' long steel bar to spread the load across 3 roof trusses. Nylon tow straps go under the cylinder heads and hook to the hoist.

We used to drop the engine right on the floor. It is much easier to get it out from underneath. Just put a blanket underneath or something else to soften the landing.😊

Not to be some criticizer, but I'm still of the thought that the best way to move things around is the cherry-picker or "the crane", because of the hanging it will not run away from you and the same time it's the hight of the reach. If you can put your claws on it, you're probably get a "score" for life. =) I made my own, extra dimensions, which has a long and short arm, both extendable. It reaches from -10 cm to 3,4 meters. Obviously you have to account the weight you're working with. With the longest reach is capable of lifting 200kg, otherwise it's made for 1,25 ton. As it is made it trades off some "compactness" for capacity, but I made it completely disassembly capable. For some works though it's better a platform. It's your call, whatever makes you more comfortable. Cheers!

Just a thought: for pulling engines, a car lift would be handy, plus a small crane on wheels to move the disconnected engine down onto some sort of heavy - duty "table" or dolly. But anyway, the US - made "Beetle engine 2.0" really looks like this Great Leap Forward in Beetle engine technology; those aluminium pulleys are just awesome, and so is the exhaust manifold. My God, if Ferry Porsche could see this😋....!

Hi CT, nice to see this one today. I think I told you I plan on getting a VW motor someday to play with around here to shoot some videos and possible rebuild? I looked yesterday to see what's out there and someone has a 1965 or so FO 1300 50hp for sale that they claim turns freely. So they do pop up. So maybe for the winter after this one but hopefully pick one up this next summer. Someone was also selling a VW stand like yours.

Buy yourself a transmission jack. The ears and tilt function would help stability, especially since you insist on working alone. Since you went with the stand, put the adapter on the engine and then use a engine hoist.

Well, I have reached the end of the road (for now) with this restoration series. I started somewhere with a middle episode and that would have been it, but I decided to watch from the very beginning. It is hard to imagine that this bug used to be stuck in the mud / dirt at one time for a long time. You did it and just like dr. Frankenstein you can say: "it's alive!". Still think you should paint it, but if you think that this bug is not special enough, maybe some cans of spray paint? How about adding a ragtop and/or converting it into an oval or split window? Enjoyed all the episodes so far.

Would a short socket and a flexible extension work for the carb intake bolt issue. Thanks for the great video and a nice clean engine. And i agree flange nuts are a lifesaver in tight spots. And that way of removing the engine brought back memories of working in my dad’s garage as a kid. No lift just a jack and jack stands.

CT, CT, CT, CT...😖! It is more simple than you are making it out to be. It's all about center of gravity to get that engine to balance with 3 fingers. If the engine was ONLY a long block, then you jack position is right beneath the oil drain plug, but because you have 20lb alternator at the end, 50lb exhaust at the same end, distributor, pulley etc., pounds are adding to the one end, and adding downward force, hence your engine wants to slide back and upwards. Therefore, adjust your center of gravity by moving the jack position towards the pulley end until...as you jack up the entire engine, you will see the flywheel side tilt more forward. You can actually have the engine be on a level balance when you mate it with the other that it is too balance 😊. Yes, fabricating a perfect VW engine adapter is great, but the reality is that VW mechanics, techs, DIYs and just simple people who want to wrench on VW have been doing it for over 60 years with no covered, cemented garage. A $20 one tone jack, non low profile is how I remove my engine 😂. Awesome videos! Pops and I are good with your 1hour+ shows. Keep them coming!
