Today we fit and weld the crossmembers in the 1965 VW Beetle restoration. Preservation, restoration, repairing antique, vintage cars and trucks is my passion. This car was forgotten in a field in South Georgia for 40 years. Let's bring it back to life. ctmoog, ct, ct's garage

i think I may have commented on this in a previous video of yours, but what you've done in this very video is EXACTLY where my VW is needing the attention. Because of that, I'm voting THIS video as one of the very best on KZbin. Your camera angles and lighting are spot on. But also, your welding and attention to detail are very good. Thank you again for such great content!

That is exactly how you do it. Start on the new metal then work out to the old. Perfect You will get best penetration that way. Same on buts too. You just have less time. need to move fairly quick to the old metal.

Drill rosette holes, weld them up with as much heat as you can for hood penetration. If you do that you don’t need to pile the welds up as much. Therefore less grinding. It’s a learning process. Great job.

Only those who have done this type of work will appreciate that wonderful feeling when all the bolt holes line up albeit sometimes with a little persuasion! Your video editing is excellent, must have taken a while. My dad worked in Kenya for 5 years. We did many a safari in his Beetle. Never let us down once. I really admire your patience and taking extra time to get everything to fit. Great work sir, from an admirer here in England.

Mate I said this on your last video but I'll say it again - you should be SO PROUD! You're doing brilliantly well, I love it. Can you remember the state this bug was in when you first got the body off? Trying to get all the dirt and mess out of it with a fork? Now look at it. I saw a good trick for you on a recent video by 5150mxVW where he's working on a '59 ragtop - after you do a line of welds and you think there are holes in there - shine your flashlight through from the back, put it behind the welding you just did. It'll shine through any holes and you'll clearly see where they are. I recommend you watch it yourself, as it's full of good advice. Stick at it mate, I'm right with you. Julian.

Hey buddy I have to agree with many comments, you are really working straight through this resto. Nice job. 😊A tip for welding and grinding around an exposed thread is to put apiece of rubber tubing over it. Also, I’ve noticed your air grinder sticks. Try getting a bottle of air tool oil and work in a few ounces. It should start on its own. ..........keep going man!

If you tack two pieces of fresh metal together and had a frame puller you could grip both pieces of metal and see that the metal will break before the weld

Looking good. If it’s not perfect it’s ok cuz the point is to getting it working and then driving. The next time you can do better. Can’t expect perfection on your first try. It you will never get perfect if you don’t try. Also think about the bus and how much less intimidating it will be to get that metal work done. It will your second rusty weld project and it will come out better than the first. Then you also have the Porsches that prob need some weld work but. It as bad as the bug and bud so those will seem super easy since it just a few areas. Like I said I just bought a welder so looking forward to learning. Mine is gas less though so we’ll see how it goes.

I have a question for you about your luggage rack installation. Wouldn't it be easier to repair the rear window channel without the rack in place because you will have an area to stand and work vs. on you knees? I have followed all your 65 VW refurbish and they are great, just my opinion.
