I love this project almost as much as your van project. It reminds me of the 1973 1303 Käfer I bought behind a McDonald's in Germany. The owner said it broke down and wouldn't start, and when he tried to jack it up to change the flat tire the jack point ripped through the floor. I paid him 500 DM (about $300 American at the time). I put in a battery and a set of points, changed the tire with a borrowed floor jack, and drove it home (illegally). In Germany a rust hole in the chassis is forbidden. So, like you, I slowly made pieces to fit and welded them in. The car had a 1963 40 horsepower engine and transmission, but I drove it all over Germany and even brought my son home in it when he was born. Wish I still had it.

There you go CT, gettin' 'er done. You've come a long way in many aspects. facing these body work and welding challenges like a champ. Those doors will seem easy now with all your experience in more complicated task. Can't wait to see this bug on the road. I finally made some progress on my bus, but now I learned the hard way a mistake I made and trying to save money is costing me more money. I have to buy a narrowed beam and it's gonna cost me $1,500 for a narrowed adjustable beam.
@CTmoog Жыл бұрын
Thanks man! 👍 why do you need a narrowed beam? Who are you buying it from?
@SanDiego_VDubLife Жыл бұрын
@@CTmoog because I used empi drop spindles and they push your wheels out plus I’m using adaptors to keep my wide five pattern which pushes my wheels out further. Haven’t bought it yet but probably Vintage Vdubs

Will respond after watching the rest of the video but just want to make sure you know don't have your face in the path of the cutoff wheel even with a face shield. That's why they come with guards on them. I worked with them for years cutting fiberglass and open with a 24 thousand RPM small air 90-degree motor like yours made by Dotco. They would explode once in a great while and went flying. Make sure you test them for cracking before starting. If you lay them down sometimes, they can get damaged.

I think you still have the bottom of the side window steel that needs to be repaired and the top of the rear window that needs to be repaired. I would close up the rear of your rocker panels at the rear wheel fender well or water and road debris will get thrown in there and cause it to rust out again.

For the love of everything automotive get rid of the patina. Its just rust that hasnt penetrated yet and will simply leave you with a rust buck in 5 years time. Use it to practice spray painting before moving onto the Ghia.
@lennym1636 Жыл бұрын
But it has penetrated threw in some spots, been telling him for months that what he has is not a patina but just a rotted car, a patina is where you have some warn out paint and maybe a very light surface rust and don't get me started on the large overlap patch's ...

What would be quite useful is to use some sort of spray wax that is applied wherever two sheets of metal form a hollow space, to avoid corrosion from the inside, especially when driving around in Florida with a 90 % humidity rating!

That's is a good question about that section, you think vw would have thought about that on the later models? 68 to present. I'm not sure what year vw stop producing this style. But I do know that they finally decided to stop doing it last year as far as parts.

Get a broken drill bit that is thinner then the hole and just cut it flat and grind. It will clean the hole. Most likely a flat bolt would be enough to clean that hole. What harm would it do just to test?
