A look at a 1966 Austin Cambridge. 1622 BMC engine. HON 594D
An updated Cambridge model, now called the A60, was introduced in October 1961. It included a new 1.6-litre version of the B-Series straight-four engine which had first been used in the MGA. Power is 61 hp (45 kW) at 4500 rpm.[22] Modified styling included side chrome stripes - some models with contrasting colour infills - and reduced fins on the rear wings. The style continued to be known as "Farina". This body covered a chassis that was slightly longer in wheelbase and wider in track than the A55. This allowed three people to be accommodated on the rear seat. Anti-roll bars were added to both front and rear suspension. An estate version with the petrol engine, called the Countryman, was also offered.
A diesel version was introduced in 1961 for export cars and was available in the UK from 1962. Early manual models had the option of column gear change. The Borg Warner three-speed Type 35 automatic transmission was an option, the first British car to be fitted with this type,[23] with the selector on the steering column. A 1.5-litre diesel option, mainly for the taxi trade, was introduced in November 1962. With only 40 hp (30 kW), top speed was limited to 110 km/h (68 mph).[22]
The A60 Cambridge sold well, with 276,534 being built before production finally ended in 1969. Its intended successor, the front-wheel-drive Austin 1800 of 1964, did not affect sales, so Cambridge production was continued until 1969 at the Morris plant at Cowley when the Austin Maxi took over production and the Morris Oxford version continued in production until 1971, when the Morris Marina was launched.
Austin A60 saloons assembled in Ireland by Brittain Smith of Portobello, Dublin 2 were identifiable by the use of Morris Oxford series VI tail-lights. The last of these were produced in 1970, and some were registered in 1971. The A60 Cambridge was effectively replaced by the Austin Maxi hatchback in April 1969, while the Oxford continued until early 1971, when it was replaced by the Morris Marina.
The car was popular with the UK taxi trade, and had dominating popularity with the Hong Kong taxi trade. In 1967, taxi versions of the Austin A60 accounted for nearly 17% of car sales, helping BMC to a total Hong Kong car market share of 28% in that year.[24]
Both a manual and automatic version of the A60 were tested by The Motor magazine in 1961. The manual had a top speed of 80.4 mph (129.4 km/h) and could accelerate from 0-60 mph (97 km/h) in 19.8 seconds. A touring fuel consumption of 25.1 miles per imperial gallon (11.3 L/100 km; 20.9 mpg‑US) was recorded. The test car cost £883 including taxes of £278. The automatic was slightly slower, with a top speed of 77.9 mph (125.4 km/h) and acceleration from 0-60 mph (97 km/h) in 24.9 seconds. A touring fuel consumption of 28.9 miles per imperial gallon (9.8 L/100 km; 24.1 mpg‑US) was recorded. The car cost £982 including taxes of £309.[23]

My dad had two. A blue saloon and a red estate with a black roof. Beautiful cars looking back, especially compared to the generic boxes nowadays. Would love to get my hands on one now.

Lovely, quite beautiful cars! My grandfather had a white Austin Cambridge and I think he loved it too.....I spent many happy hours sitting on the back seat, which incidentally, was leather.....

My Dad had one of these back in the Seventies. Maroon with a cream stripe. It had no performance worth talking about but was a beautifully driveable and comfortable car. I learnt to drive in it. All credit to whoever restored HON. It's a superb restoration!

Superb car! Many comments on here saying their grandfather had one and so did mine. Seemed enormous inside (for a 9 year old). He sold it about 1973 but in the early 80's I passed it on a country lane. I tried to trace it recently in order to make an offer but it's probably scrapped.

My first car was a 1959 A 60 Cambridge. 4 speed column change. 1622cc engine. Rubber mats in front and carpet in back. Not much in top speed but tremendous pulling power. I was cheerfully accelerating up 'Pretty Sally Hill' whilst towing a Toyota Landcruiser 🙂

In the late 1970s, these cars were still popular with men in their late thirties and forties. The younger men were driving Japanese cars, Ford Cortinas and Volkswagen Beetles. 😊

My dad had a dove grey and white Morris Oxford. I loved the beauty. Sadly, to my dad it was just a work horse being on the road all day every day as a rep, but I loved the thing. It had a good turn of speed too. I remember trouncing it all the way to Middlesborough and whilst it was taken to top speed, it never missed a beat. That old B series engine was pretty much indestructible. I have since looked up its top speed and it comes out at a laughable 78 MPH. Okay, but this was 50 years ago.

in 1977 my mother gave me my first car,, an automatic austin cambridge,, my friends laughed at me for having a granny car,, funny thing , my friends had v6 and v8 cars and so many times they would ring me up to come and help them because they had broken down,,, i wish i still had the austin because i loved that car, unfortunately rust took hold and the car was written off the road,, one thing i liked about the car was ,if you had a flat battery you could pull out a crank handle and crank over the motor to start it,,, now i just have a boring Mercedes AMG C 63S.

My father had one of these in the 1960s. I thought the performance could be improved and wrote to the Shorrock supercharger company and was sorry to hear back from them that they had no model suitable for it.

I wanted the engine sound too, but it couldn't be heard as it left the gates, too much wind interference and a revving escort behind me. They're quiet cars really, lovely purr. I may well meet the owner again soon, i'll ask him to start her up and i'll get my rode mic on the case and record it.

You're quite right, engine wise they are particulary quiet, mainly transmission whine and the exhaust throat sounds are my pleasure :-) I owned two Oxford Countryman's and a lovely black A55 Mk2 Cambridge,, probably inspired from childhood memories of Dad's 1957 black A55 Cambridge.
