1966 Ford 7-Litre R-Code 427 Convertible Muscle Car Of The Week Video #20
This episode features another super-rare car from the Brothers Collection, a 1966 Ford 7-Liter 427 4-speed convertible! The 7-Liter came with a 428 V8 under the hood, but just 2 people opted for the high-performance R-Code dual-quad 427 to power their 7-Liter convertibles, and this is one!

I owned a 7 Liter 1966 Ford convt. it had the 428 -4 speed with some work done on it. The 7 liter got 20 mpg on the road and 16 in town. I had all of the option on it what a joy to drive and yes to stomp the Chevy and GTO, etc. The 1966 7 Liter Convt. was a great car to say least. Wish I had it back

Love the 65-67 Ford full size cars. The 65 Galaxie 427 is my favorite but the the 66-67 7 Liter's with the 428(especially with a 4 speed)were beautiful cars and were smooth and quiet but still would go like hell. The 427 was basically a race engine de-tuned just enough to be streetable but the 428 was a great street engine and had plenty of balls when you needed it to. I only would've opted for the 427 if I planned on drag racing the car. Otherwise the 428 or even the HiPo 390 4 barrel were plenty good enough

Ours was a 1966 7-Litre 2-door painted in Arcadian Blue. She was a 4-speed, loaded with every available, power everything, locks, windows, even stereo 8-track (accept AC) and was a 428/4-speed. The Reese trailer hitch use to scrap the asphalt when did pulled a hole shot. She was the true muscle car with full luxury in our neighborhood. All the 1970s muscle cars in our town were only flashy with their graphic strips/etc and their "smogged" engines, de-tuned for emissions and lower compression ratios.

Hahhahah!! That car wouldn't get 20 mpg if you pushed it off a cliff!!!....please.....that 428 gets 11mpg if you grandma it.... and floor it, you can literally see the gas needle drop..

The 427’s were rare by 1966. The 427’s were never a favorite of Ford Motor Company because it was more difficult to produce than other engines. The 428 was sort of a replacement but the 460/429 was definitely on the drafting table by 1966-67 so the 427’s were being put in vehicles to get inventory down.

True. Plus the 427 was big bore, short stroke. The 428 was small bore, long stroke. Both FE series big blocks but that's pretty much all they had in common.

@deanstevenson6527

@Keith Coppage The joy about the FE is that the castings varied but the 428 was the economy engine which didn't break through the cylinder bore castings with its smaller bore. The 427 was a bigger 406, with a tendancy to be scrapped when bored. Ford made it a Le Mans winner though. And NASCAR, and SCCA. And Daytona. The so called 425 hp 427 and the 335 or 345 hp 428...were so very different. The sound, the vibe, it's like the R code was on acid. The 428 and the later Cobra Jet...just weren't the same. All the 427s were advanced swiss Cheese who took USA Cleveland Engine Plant 1 stuff to Europe and slaughtered everyone with Shock and Awe. The 428...just Pizzas. Maybee with all the topping and extras, but just Pizzas. Dispite having no semi Hemi or polyspheric heads or triple Cam SOHC's s or huge bore spacings and canted valves or Cross Rams or lineage to some kind of Top Fuel engine...it busted b@||s everywhere it went. Because it was three times the engine the 428, 429s 460's or Super Duty Truck engines were. Who uses an overhead valve wedge 7 liter V8 to eat Ferrari's, Porsche's, Vettes Mopar Hemis and GTO's and Catalina 421 Tripower 2+2's. The Side Oiler was the toughest Ford engine, with the toughest gearbox and 9 inch duff in only the toughest cars. Vale the 427!

My dad had one of these in a hard top, rust metallic over white interior. I have exactly one B+W picture of me as an infant in my car seat sitting in the back of it. No memory of it myself. He traded it in for a '69 Merc Marauder X100 that I do remember a little bit. A couple cars earlier he had the 427 '63 Ford. By the time I was old enough to understand cars at all, he had moved on to two decades of wood-paneled station wagon ownership. That's what I learned to drive in. Dang.

Looks like a plush luxury car...sounds like a Holman Moody built stock car. That is one mean Ford and I'm a Mopar guy. The Ford R-Code 427 cars are my favorite muscle cars ever that weren't built by Chrysler... particularly the 63 1/2 R-Code Galaxie and 66-67 R-Code Fairlane. The Ford 427 had success in basically every kind of racing you can imagine...NASCAR, NHRA Drag Racing... Even the GT-40's that placed 1-2-3 in the 1966 24 hr LeMans Race were powered by the 427. My favorite American production big block V8 ever that wasn't made by Chrysler...followed closely by the Chevy ZL1 427 and Pontiac 421 Super Duty

This year was my choice of Ford body style for the 63-69 large sedan Gal and LTD . The Country squire look nicer for the 1965 year because I liked the tail lights and a narrow section for the wood trim compared to the 1966 . A very rare 7 litre is the 1967 Country squire with bucket seats and a 4-spd top loader. The buyer insisted on a 4spd 428 so he got his choice while the wife got her station wagon for the family. He sent a letter to Lee Iaccoca explaining why , FORD agreed to build it and it was the only 428 4spd Squire for 1967. VIN 7U74Q143183 74=6+4 passenger deluxe wagon but it had bucket seat as a 5+4 passenger. The Q=428 4 bl .

The 66 Country Squire w as much better looking than the anemic looking 65. The 66 was an inch and a half wider and sported the premium die cast grille shared with the XL, LTD and 7 Litre models. Full wheel covers became std equipment. The dual facing rear seat models came with power drum brakes as standard.

Correction; the Pontiac GTO was NOT a competitor to the 7 litre because the GTO was a midsized car, like a Fairlane. For Pontiac the 7 litre competitor would be the Bonneville or Catalina body.

The GTO was a mid-sized car (Tempest/LeMans) with the 389 V8, while the 7 Litre was a full-sized Galaxie body with the 427/428. I believe a more direct competitor to this car would be the Pontiac Catalina with the 2+2 package which came with Pontiac's 421 V8. In addition, Ford only sold a few of these 7 Litre cars (even with the more sedate 428) while Pontiac sold a ton of GTOs. Great piece on a great automobile!

Saw one of these in an auto wrecking yard in Wilmington California. Was looking for some parts for my 61 Ford country sedan. In 1971 the Galaxy had the forest green. And a 428. The owner of the auto wrecking yard owned the 7 liter. He said he'd sell it for $4,000 remember that was back in 1971. But he asked me what are you trying to do resell it and make more money? I said no that we are a Ford family and we would like to have it in the family and we own Stock in Ford motor company. Well I was just a young kid out of high school had no money.

The way is ... These factory wheels with hubcaps and skinny white or red in some walls tyres .... Man these designers back in the 60's and 70's they were pro .... They had taste , these designers and engineering were true car racers they knew what they were doing ... These designers where born on the back seat of a racing car and they first toy were a wrench and greaser oil gun! Back then they need to do things under the Henry fords lll radar , do things like secret and fight for the B.S. To get they idea approved , these guys single handed fought for they vision of what people wanted to drive , bless those guys that had to use they imagination using same parts of different cars to create others cars cs the rule was saving on parts tooling , same windshield , same most interchangeable bits and pieces and they made magic with , Nowadays so much hi tech , computer 3 D all this things and no creativity , today is the classic " All hats .... No cattle "

When you are comparing cars and manufacturers, please be accurate in those comparisons. To even show this car in the "same" class is sacrilegious to both cars. The proper comparison would have been more like the 1966 Pontiac Catalina 2+2 421/4sp.. You've done this on many of your videos. Educate the right way, or don't even attempt it. Having said that, thanks for bringing this generation of cars to the masses. Keep it up!

I remember in shop class in junior high school we used to argue Ford and Chevey, the Chevy guys said this car looked like a box, yeah I guess it does . 😆

He's wrong when he says that the engine blocks are the same. The 427 is a sideoiler with cross bolted mains, the 428 is a centeroiler with 2 bolt mains.

OK, love the show and it's good to see the big mean Fords, but what about the Mercs? I had a 4-speed full console loaded bucket seat Merc S-55 that was one of my all time fav cars. Sort of the one I wish I still had. Any of those in the Bros Collection?
