1966 Ford Mustang Exhaust Sound Before and After Headers

1966 Ford Mustang A Code Fastback. Holley 600 Carb with vacuum secondaries, Edlebrock Performer intake, mild cam and Hedman longtube headers. Chambered muffler.
The before is with stock 289 exhaust manifold and after is with Hedman longtube headers. Mufflers are the same before and after.

Thanks Brian. I was quite surprised too. The existing pipes and mufflers were in too good a condition to replace so decided to keep the for a while but it sounds great so ill keep the system as is.

I've always liked the 66 GT exhaust holes, so I bought a repo valance and cut my own holes. Added trim rings and painted to match, installed GT tips. Now have a 67 with 66 GT exhausts....

Yes there was definitely a power improvement right through the rev range, particularly the top end. No heating issues at all.

There's a company here in the UK that does them too. They have essentially made a press for an entire firewall that's mirrored to the normal one. You deconstruct the whole front of the car, remove the old firewall, and weld in the new one. Then you rebuild the car with the steering column and pedals on the other side.

Any performance increase noticeable? Really can't decide on what setup I want (just not single exhaust) for my 64 comet 289. On one hand, it's kind of a grandma car. But this is a 2 door caliente with cragar s/s wheels and is reminiscent of the late 60's roofline with the convertible top up, so I want it to be a bit aggressive but not obnoxious.

@teamgforce75 hey there man! I just got a 67 convertible with the good ol 289 and I need help on choosing an exhaust! Very stuck on it. Want it to be loud but not annoyingly loud since the top is down. Also, i heard headers good for the engine? Do you recommend I put them on? Wouldn’t want the inside cabin to vibrate too much, not sure if it causes that. Appreciate your help a ton

Hey Ryan I have Hedman headers and there is no vibration or anything close to that. Smooth as silk. I've got chambered mufflers but am about to put a stainless steel system in and put in either Magnaflow or Borla mufflers. Do yourself a favour and get headers and nice mufflers!

Its the original 289 block with a 302 crank.

The crank is actually what makes it a 289 w/ a 2.89” stroke versus the 302 with a it’s 3.00” stroke…they both share a 4.00” cylinder bore (of course if one hasn’t been bored due to wear)
