People forget that ND can't get some of the players that teams like LSU and Florida get because ND players actually have to go to class and pass or not play. They've always had a disavantage.

USC loses at home 51-0! The greatest game in college football history. :-) Clay Helton had not even been born at this time but USC fired him after the game anyways!

I saw this game. Notre Dame came in determined to avoid getting upset like they had been in 1964, and to win convincingly in order to rise in the polls, which they did. I thought they ran up the score; of course, they were better, they needed that big score, and SC helped them, sort of, by going for risky plays here and there. The first half of the 1974 game had exactly the same feeling as this one. I was watching on television then, and I almost turned it off...but didn't.

For years afterward Parseghian would justify keeping his starters in by saying "Should I have told my players to lay down and play dead?" Well Ara, ya did the week before against Michigan State, and you WEREN'T EVEN WINNING that game.

He properly pronounced "NO-TRuh" Dame, not "NOter" as people pronounce it now.

Against MSU, ND had lost their starting Running Back, starting QB, and starting center. Their diabetic backup QB was obviously floundering late in the game, and it became obvious that ND wasn't going to be able to move the ball offensively. Having rallied for the tie, the most prudent thing to do (though not popular with fans of either side) was to try not to lose the game instead screwing the whole thing up trying to win it. If you watch the entire game, you might see it differently.

Wow...Notre Dame actually had a defense. ;-) I hope that they bring some of this to the Sugar Bowl.

MSU played for the tie, not the Irish. With 1&1/2 minutes to go in the 4th quarter, MSU faced a 4th down and 5 yards and elected to punt to the Irish, content to take a tie with the mighty team from South Bend.

To proffromgview: People said the same thing about USC back in the 80s and 90s, and look at them now. For you to say that ND will never be back is absolutely moronic and makes you sound like an idiot. USC went winless against the Irish for 12 straight years. You're only half-way there and already boasting ND will never win again? Wow...
