Glad I found you videos on the vintage merc! I'm resurrecting a 1968? That's been sitting in my friends shed for 6 years

Great video, the old service manual I have for this motor didn't have the spacer called out. I was having water flow issues in neutral, opened it up and the nylon was melted flat not sure how any water was flowing... Swapped out the part and barrel tested today and flow was great. Thanks for the upload.

Are you able to verify the condition of this spacer with just the lower unit removed and cowl off? I’ve never pulled a power head yet

I just picked up one of these motors for my father-in law. I was told when I bought it that it needed a pump impeller. I picked up the parts and realized right away that the pump kit had the wrong impeller. My impeller drive has a pin not a key. The pump kit came with a key and impeller with a slot. Now waiting for correct impeller. My concern is that the pump and impeller was actually not in bad shape. I say this video and I'm thinking..... I hope I don't have this same issue. Thanks for the video though, at least if it is overheating I have a good idea what the problem could be. Great job!!

Jeff Griffith… The rule of thumb is that if your going to dismantle the lower unit you should always replace the water pump impeller if you don’t know it’s age. Any impeller over two years old should be replaced anyway. Therefore you didn’t waste your time or effort by changing it. It probably needs replaced anyway. I hope you don’t encounter the same problems I had and hope you get her running in good working order. Thanks for watching and commenting. I appreciate your tuning in.

@@LivetofishOutboardRepair I replaced the impeller and other seals on the shift shaft. Ran it at home. It had great flow from the pump. It did misfire a little running here in garbage can but I figured may clear up on Lake. Got it to the lake and it slowly ran worse and worse. Have to go through carb and fuel pump. I also found the ignition condenser was ripped off under the flywheel. I saw a wire hanging down beneath the flywheel. When I looked upward I saw the bracket of the condenser hanging down. Once I remove the flywheel I found the remains of the condenser trapped above the magnets. It was shredded. The points looked newer so I think someone positioned it incorrectly before me. Would you happen to have a picture or video of location of condenser or points replacement. I know on an automobile a bad condenser will cause a misfire or improper timing due to arcing at the points. T

@@jeffgriffith5594 Sorry but I don’t have a photo of the position of the ignition components under the flywheel. You can purchase a service manual at www.marineengine.com I’m pretty sure the manual will have photos.

@@LivetofishOutboardRepair yeah I can’t even bring a carb into the house, but also I make such a mess and spray so much crap everywhere it’s fair. My garage floor is littered with 2 stroke stains and penetrating oil spots lol

I found a 1967 Mercury 60 6 horse and seems to have an overheating issue as well. Took the power head off and the dang thing looks fine. it pees, but the water comes out hot. I don't get it. Also another issue is it won't change gears and is just stuck in forward. Any ideas?
@LivetofishOutboardRepair
@LivetofishOutboardRepair Жыл бұрын
Idaho Mountain Family… I believe that the hot water out the telltale is normal as long as it’s not scalding hot. You may want to replace the water pump impeller if it’s over a couple years old. The impellers lose elasticity and do not pump water efficiently enough to cool the motor effectively. If they get to old they become dry rotted and break apart and sometimes end up in the powerhead cooling chambers. As far as not shifting into reverse…you will probably need to take the gear-case and examine the gears, prop shaft and ratchet (clutch dog) for wear.

Thanks for the great tutorial. I have a merc 45 4.5hp 75ish, same setup as your 3.9. Could it be that the water outlet tube has a small orifice in order to create a water pressure inside the water jacket so as to make sure water reaches every area of motor internals?

In part 6 I show the problem is the small nylon grommet that joins the water tube into the powerhead. It was so restricted from heat that it caused the pee stream to come out boiling hot. Once I replaced it the pee stream was cool.
