1967 DC-9-15(F) Kalitta Charters II LOUD Rocket Take Off

In 1967 this DC-9 was first delivered to Continental Airlines. Today it works as a small freighter under Kalitta Charters II N915CK. An incredible experience to hear once again how much more noise these older aircraft produce compared to the big jets of today.

The DC-9 took you up to the skies like no other passenger aircraft, ever. like straight out of a sling. The power you felt against your back on takeoff was just incredible. And of course the deafening engine roar, especially in the rear of the cabin. That's what was called flying! Still the most beautiful, graceful, elegant plane that ever flew.

I have flown on DC9s (Continental Airlines) as a kid. Sitting in the near back row looking out the window to see the fan hub from 4 ft away and hearing the shrill scream during take-off was a hoot.

This aircraft is still flying g in 2018 at the age of 50 years. A friend of mine used to fly these for British Midland, he said they would climb like a rocket! I always wanted to fly them myself along with the B757, never did get to fly the DC9 but am very happy spending my working life taking the good people of Manchester to and from the Mediterranean holiday resorts in B757's. Happy days!

The 9 dash 10 is a hot rod. You have to be careful during takeoff without leading edge slats not to walk the spoilers if you lose an engine. It has the same roll rate as F-16's. I still liked the 72 and 75 more.

Spent quite a lot of time riding the herd of DC-9's flown by Northwest Airlines in the late 80's thru mid 90's. The model in this video was a particularly enjoyable aircraft in which to fly. These felt as if they were falling "up" when departing the runway. Real quiet up front and an enjoyable engine whine in the back. Those were the days when aluminum aircraft powered by mighty turbojet engines ruled the skies!

Am l missing something Here? The whole plane is a visual work of art. How you stayed focused on the forward fuselage for 3/4 of the time is one for the history books. Do you know the pilots? An original plane still active is probably on borrowed time. Opportunity lost. The proportions of the DC-9-15 are so balanced it's a treat for the eyes to see as a whole like the Learjet 23 is. Otherwise, the subject was excellent. Thank you.

+John Bryant Well, it's kind of a problematic statement. The DC-9 is a special case in that it was very over-engineered (a Douglas trademark, at least until McDonnell took over). In this regard, we could say that even other US-built airplanes fail by weight of comparison. The early 737, for example, was not certified to anywhere near the same number of cycles (75,000* for the 737-100/200/200 Advanced versus 110,000 for the DC-9). Keep in mind that, with deep pockets, an airplane can fly indefinitely, so long as it undergoes the required maintenance. I am sure there are plenty of Airbus airplanes that will withstand the test of time just as well, but the airline business is a competitive one, and it will often cost less to sell or scrap an old airplane and replace it with something newer and more fuel-efficient. The DC-9s got a pass here for many years because the sector lengths were so short that the extra fuel efficiency of a newer airplane didn't make any real difference. *That number is for line number 292 and upwards, by the way - for the first 291, it was 34,000, due to the original fuselage lap joints.

Well the oldest active Airbus (according to airfleets) is XA-TWQ, flying for AeroUnion. Originally delivered to Air France in March 1977. 40 years old is pretty close so I wouldn't doubt an Airbus. Plus you have to consider the fact that Boeing and Douglas were around much earlier than Airbus
