Several L-188’s tragically broke up in flight due to a phenomenon called “whirl mode flutter” in 1959. Lockheed discovered and resolved the issue but the damage had been done. Commercially it was dead, however, it enjoyed a very successful career as the military P-3 Orion. Great to know that a few of these magnificent turboprop’s are still flying !

In case you're wondering about all the brazilians flooding the comments section, Varig had a shuttle service between Rio and São Paulo that operated for 30 years so folks tend to get all nostalgic when they see an Electra. In 1960 my grandmother, brother and I flew fro m Burbank to San Francisco on an Electra at Christmas. I was about 8 years old and loved airplanes. I sat next to a window on the right side in line with the prop and was fascinated at how the pitch changed as we began rolling down the runway. The Flight Attendant later took us up to the cockpit for a look. As we landed the fog was extremely thick. My parents waiting for us told us that only 2 planes were allowed to land because of the fog and they had ''special instruments'' to guide them. That was my first airplane flight and I will never forget it. You could feel the huge power as soon as those props bit into the air. I was thrilled to hear that my best friend's dad worked on building the wings on the Electras at Lockheed. He used to give us 1/4'' stepped drill bits with built in pilots that were used on the wings. I still have a few. Great video, thanks!

In Brazil the "Electras" (as we Brazilians call them) are regarded as "flying legends" as they reliably and proudly flew for 30 years (1962-1992) in the most important air route in Brazil: the São Paulo-Rio bridge flight, operated by Varig Airlines.

These videos remind me of being a kid in the mid - late '60s and getting all dressed up (of course) and going to the airport to pick up incoming family members or to "see them off". Back then it was common for passengers to have to walk outside between the terminal and aircraft and use the boarding stairs, and the terminal had a rooftop observation deck where you could stand right over the gate where your passenger was arriving or departing and wave and call out your greetings or goodbyes to them while they walked to or from the aircraft. Such trips to the airport were always an exciting, big event, and in retrospect exposed me to a "who's who" of mid to late '60s airlines and aircraft. Lots of TWA 707s, United DC-8s, American 727s, and Delta DC-9s. Many Electras and assorted other prop aircraft were operating then, especially with regionals such as Allegheny and Piedmont. Being outside on the terminal roof gave us the full effect of the sights, sounds, and scents of the prop, turboprop, or ear splitting jets of the day as they taxied up to or past the gates. On one such trip we were out on the rooftop deck when two fighters took off together in full afterburner and shook the airport (F-100s I believe). On another occasion in 1969, I was excused from school to be picked up by family to go to the airport to "see off" my Marine big brother, who had been home on leave but had to report back to Pendleton for deployment to Vietnam. Being in such close proximity to aircraft of that era made an impression on me at a young age, and I eventually ended up in the USAF on heavy jets.

I was 8 years old and flew "unaccompanied" on a Holiday Airlines Electra from Oakland to Lake Tahoe to visit my cousin. He and I made a few trips back and forth between OAK and TVL during our elementary school years. Holiday went bankrupt soon after our first trips, but Air California and PSA kept flying Electras to Tahoe for another couple of years. I think I did that round trip four times over a couple of years. Love the sound of those Allisons turning those big fat blades. The L188 was a large cargo and passenger plane that we flew throughout Colombia and in the US, so we experienced all the vicissitudes of an aerial operation with bad weather in the Caribbean and Central America, where Topography is incidental and volcanic. The L-188 Electra was the first transport type aircraft I ever sat at the controls of. A very impressive, powerful aircraft to a budding aviator. The early models had a design flaw that led to several fatal accidents before the flaw was identified and corrected. But by that time the damage to reputation had been done, and jet airliners were making their presence known. Interestingly, the L-188 wasn't much slower than the jets that took over. It would also out climb the earlier jets of its size. I remember Western Airlines started Los Angeles/Mexico City service with the L-188. Don't recall the other airlines that were operating the B-707 at the time, but flight time between the two cities was only 15 minutes faster than the L-188. In later years I checked out in the Convair 580 which used two of the same engines as the L-188, and weighed about half as much. I had expected the CV-580 to perform like the L-188, but it was about 100 knots slower. The difference was the Convair was a mid 1930s design converted to the Allison Turbo Props while the L-188 was designed for those power plants.

+eloyex .... you just gave me an idea to sleep better. Put a CD together with interior noise from different piston engine's like this one, dc-3 etc. Hook up my girlfriend's vibrator for the right vibration to the bed frame...... YEAH that will work better than the thunderstorms CD. "keep the faith people, and keep on keeping on"

I'll bet the passengers felt the intense vibes of these massive engines during the 1950's.

At about 2:20, you get this howling sound from the Allison which is one of the best parts, as you know it's about ready to take off. Then when they go full power the howling increases in pitch then goes away. Must be some airflow dynamics from the exhaust, but it's pure music for sure.

This video is incredible, Excellent catch, I love these Electra's, I always hoped to fly in one of these but never have, The company I work for makes parts for these & also for the P-3 Orion (Military Version of the Electra) WOW talk about using all the runway. Thanks so much for sharing this historical aircraft.
@TheHDAviation9 жыл бұрын
Ed Whisenant Thanks very much, I appreciate it! It really did seem to use up most of the runway, definitely a tricky airport with the steep hills on both ends of the runway. I'd love to see a P-3 Orion in person some day, hopefully I'll get lucky!

US Navy is still flying a derivative aircraft, the P-3 Orion, as a sub hunter. The Australians sent theirs out to look for that missing airliner a few years back. The Navy had them based in Brunswick, Maine. While in Hilo, HI I saw Orion's with various squadron markings doing touch'n'go landings at the civilian airport there almost every day. They'd make an approach from the north parallel to the town's major thoroughfare, H-19 Hawaii Belt Road. Same plane would circle around so it must have been training or practice using that runway as an alternative landing strip.

Very pretty paint job . And nice sturdy looking plane. Propeller planes always freak me out as the mechanics of the engines had to been so extreme. When I was a kid, luckily the jet engine was already popular and I never had to ride in that type of plane. I always thought they were going to fall off.

The Electras used to come apart in the air because of vibration problems, as I understand. They obviously fixed it with the "Orion" variant. Even without the faults, the Electras would have been out-of-favour by the early '60s once that jets had come in.

If there was ever a cadillac of the turboprops in history, this is it! L-188. And they still fly to this day! ;)

This reminds me of the PSA Electra. I flew on it twice. Once out of Burbank to Lake Tahoe, and then the return flight. I was always paranoid it was going to crash, and on the return flight, we hit severe winds, and the plane dropped quite a bit, and it freaked me out. Now, I would love to fly on it, and wished they still offered commercial flights in/out of TVL.

I love seeing these old airplanes but If their fighting fires you would think they would be moving a little quicker to get the airplane on its way. Looks like an Air California paint job. Great airline.

We all have to have respect for the Electras, they flew for 30 years in Brazil by Varig Brasil, mainly in the Rio-São Paulo airway, the Electras were iconic planes both in Brazil and Varig. This plane only brings us good memories. I miss you, my Electra. The aerial bridge was never like before without you.
