1967 Ford Thunderbird Commercials [& More]
The Thunderbird's fifth-generation brought the second major change in the car's design direction since its debut in 1955. From 1958 to 1966, the Thunderbird had remained fundamentally the same in concept as a sporty two-door coupe/convertible with two rows of seating. However, the introduction of the Ford Mustang in early 1964 had created a challenge to the Thunderbird's market positioning for it. Like the Thunderbird, the Mustang was also a two-door coupe/convertible with two rows of seating. The Mustang had an advantage in that it was substantially cheaper. To prevent overlap between the two cars, Ford's response was to move the Thunderbird upmarket. The result, introduced for 1967, was a larger Thunderbird with luxury appointments more in line with a Lincoln.
The new Thunderbird abandoned unibody construction in favor of body-on-frame construction with sophisticated rubber mountings between the body and frame to reduce noise and vibration. Two significant departures from the previous generation of the Thunderbird were the elimination of a convertible model and the addition of a four-door model, which used suicide doors for rear-seat access. The available four-door design remained a unique feature to this generation, as it was not carried on after 1971. One of the most noticeable design elements of the fifth-generation Thunderbird was the gaping, fighter jet-inspired grille opening that incorporated hidden headlights.

In the summer of 1966 my Dad got complimentary tickets for a preview film showing the 1967 Ford line at a local movie theater. The preview was a 30 minute feature to be followed by a screening of the new movie "Fantastic Voyage". The theater was packed and the house lights dimmed. The audience hushed as the Ford film began. When the Thunderbird 4-door appeared on screen the audience gasped then flowed into ooohs and aaahs at the stunning beauty. I was in awe of that car and all these decades later still am. Dad was indeed in the market for a new car that year and he cross-shopped many cars including the TBird but chose a Bonneville instead. Years later I asked him why he didn't choose the Thunderbird and was shocked when he told me he thought it was UGLY! I still shake my head in disbelief.

@@radioguy1620 The first year; 1968, 429 got the highest compression ratio of all the 429 thunderjets. It had 11:1 ratio. After 1968, they increased the deck height and it dropped compression to 10.5:1

Although, many 428's found their way into 66' T-Birds, 428 was definitely the way to go in the new heavy "Glamour Bird". 427 R was only for Fairlane and Galaxie platforms, apparently. 427 R 1966 7 Litre Galaxie is the ultimate full size collectible, they only built about 44. I should be considered a muscle car, as it's wheelbase was only 3 inches longer than the GTO and would certainly outrun it.

That first bit of the Thunderbird was not a '67. Notice the steering wheel. All '67 Fords had the 'flower pot' steering wheel center.

SO Ford killed the Thunderbird convertible and brought out the T-Bird suicide door sedan which was a puny Continental wannabe that had lower sales than r the rag top.

I've read that they killed the convertible over concerns it wouldn't pass changes in Federal Safety standards. But they didn't kill it in the other lines. I always felt they wanted the Mustang to be the focus for convertibles, and the 4-Door Bird (while kinda sorta cool with the suicide configuration) was just an oddity.
