I found this 1967 AMC Rambler Rebel SST 2 door hardtop in my travels wasting away in a farmyard. The car had been off the road since 1981. It's got the 290 cubic inch V8 with a 2 barrel carburetor and an automatic transmission. Other than "Cruise Command" it doesn't seem to have much for options. Let's see if we can get this thing back on the road! I do have brake parts on order and a carb kit as well. UPDATE: This car has been sold to a new home in Colorado!

During that period of time I used AMC for over the road sales. 50K per year, kept them three years. Never had a major problem, no oil burners, and very comfortable cars. Wish I had one now. I drove station wagons. Sold tv parts to tv shops and covered southwest Oklahoma on a weekly route. I started using Fords before AMC and got tired of replacing starters, water pumps, and altenorters. The acronym has surreptitious meaning. The " Concorde SST " ( Super Sonic Transport ) flew its maiden voyage in March 1969 ! But there was a lot of advertising hype to promote it almost 2 yrs prior. The acronym " erupted " into the automakers vernacular well after they dropped the grotesque tail fins. Now they were in the rocket age not the jet. So SST it was. But you are correct, the vehicle moniker was Super Sport Touring. I had a '68 Javelin " SST ". I am fortunate to be able to write this !

My dad had a 1968 Rebel wagon that he got from his aunt. We rebuilt the engine and automatic transmission on it. As we restored it, I noticed the body looked like Mopar design, including the flat style door handles. It looked like the Brady Bunch station wagon except ours was green and white. Under the hood, the 6 cylinder engine looked like a Chevy 250 except the starter was mounted on driver side. And that little 3 speed automatic looked alot like the little C4 we pulled out of a friend's 67 Mustang. It most likely was Ford because the bell housing was detachable on our rebel and the mustang as well, so a person could've put one of those in anything. I like those old Rebels but I just wonder if the AMC people just lacked imagination during those few years and just copycat the other guys. Wish we still had that Rebel wagon.

@@HowardJrFord our 68 Rebel wagon was often mistaken by admirers for Mopar until they got closer to it. Maybe it doesn't look exactly like a Road Runner but at a distance someone could mistake it for a Plymouth. Perhaps what upsets the Mopar people is that someone commented and said the Rebel is where Chrysler got their design ideas from. Well, I would definitely agree to contend with such a notion myself. In my guess, the reverse is true. AMC Rambler probably got their design ideas from other manufacturers. That's possibly what could have put AMC in the low ratings amongst the big 3. It's just too bad they couldn't get ahead because I hear some of those AMC V8's were serious contenders in the performance field.

That thing ran really well once it finally fired up. That was one of the easiest first starts you have ever had, lol. You can't kill an AMC. My mom had a Gremlin ('73, I think). She had three rollover accidents in that car, and it barely had a scratch on it. Nothing like an AMC.

Don't know about using a dime to clean points. We always used the striker from a book of paper matches. And either the cover of the match book, or a buisness card to gap them.

We know you’ll make us proud in the next Rambler SST video . I like AMC . Growing up , we made our own HiPo amc ( clone rambler SST ) out of a hand me down ‘67 rambler rogue , no amc 343 to be had . When we got done stripping a ‘66 el Camino that someone graciously rapped around a pole , the rouge was sporting a 4:11 rear spring over axle , LT1350 , Cragar sst’s all around . I tried to,talk the owner into swapping in a Ford 302 but he was a GM guy like me . The rogue chewed up turbo 350’s every few weeks . I told the owner and my brother ( two know it all’s ) to do the SOA and to get the drive line angle right , re - clock the rear axle so the yoke was in phase with the trans output shaft . Was told to STFU . Not to my amazement but their embarrassment , it threw driveshafts regularly . Finally , we torched off the freshly welded axle perches and set them right . Over time , we got proper accelerator linkage and shift linkage . No more 1/4” aircraft cable with a loop tied into it and reaching under and tripping a home made lever bolted on the trans and shifted using an umbrella to select positions . Yeah , there wasn’t much aftermarket in the late 70’s , just headers and aluminum intakes and ignition systems . But we were spoiled because we didn’t have to build our own headers and use magnetos from 50’s era cars . The car was dubbed the Maytag mobile ( it was white ) by the neighborhood drunk . The only radiators that fit were two, core which did nothing but give excellent heat in the winter but needed cool, down every 1 - 2 hours or IMMEDIATELY after spanking someone after a two lane blacktop run . I had my own plans for this car after the owner acquired a ‘70 GTO with a crushed front urethane bumper ( ram air hood intact ) and a 400 featuring spun bearing in the bottom end . I didn’t have enough cash in time to buy it , so his dad junked it to avoid any more tickets ( no plates ) . His dad junked the rogue too 😢 . He got a ‘72 GTO that was sweet but of course he always had to ruin a classic . He made his own interior mods ( tacky ) and swapped in a poncho 350 ( supposedly worked 🤣 ) from the smog 400 . At least it had an m22 . Life was never the same after the rogue was gone . If I wasn’t so poor as a kid , I would have had the rogue , the ‘70 GTO and after a while his ‘72 also . Well , this comment is as long as this video so no time to tell about my two CJ5 ‘s . Real quick ; the 1980 has a swapped in 258 with a T5 ( real short rear driveshaft ) . The 1973 is in dry dock for repair / resto . Ok , first comment on your channel and I wrote my life story . AMC has history in my past and present . Did I mention I had a 1978 Jeep Cherokee FSJ ? ………….. BTW , I dig that windshield washer pump pedal . Wish the rogue had one . 👍

One can only imagine what AMC would have looked like today. They had some badass looking muscle cars in the 60s and some of the 70s. Who doesn't love a Jeep ya know. Great find Mortske, you found a gem for sure, and to have it fire up so easily was crazy!! But i still think you need to go back for that orange Pontiac Astre wagon, if its not rotted plum out, those are very desirable little cars when you transplant a v8 into it. We still drag race a little Vega hatchback that we've had for 31yrs. Love those H bodies!

That car is a SERIOUS diamond in the rough. Did you see how white that car turned when he started power washing it, WOW. That car is really nice for as old as it is and that Engine Runs GOOD! Dude, that's a going to town vehicle. Flat Black paint on the top with a flat clear get another set or red correct size tires and rims to go up front and OMG, you have it made Bruv. I see the real potential in that car and what you could do with it. Mortske you have yourself a real gem there "NO JOKE"! I am not even finished watch the video. I just had to write what I was thinking about before I lost it... TE HE.
