I remember years ago watching this documentary on TV and was so thrilled when I found it here on KZbin. I was 10 years old that spring, and although I grew up in St. Lambert (a suburb located on Montreal's South Shore) and loved the Habs, I didn't mind the fact that Toronto beat us. After all, it was Canada's centennial year in 1967, and since we were hosting Expo 67 as the crowning jewel of the celebrations, many of us in Montreal felt it was only right that the Habs should win the Cup too. But the Leafs had other plans, and full credit to them. In my case, I simply thought it was great that a Canadian team won it in our country's special year. I didn't care if it was the Habs or the Leafs. It's funny how time has shaped all this. Toronto has not won a Cup since then, while Montreal has prevailed 10 times. And there are some Habs fans who think of 1967 as "the one that got away", in spite of the fact that Montreal won the two years before (65 and 66), and won the two years after (68 and 69). Also great to hear both Danny Gallivan and Bill Hewitt calling the games. And the commentator at the end? None other than Alex Trebek, who would go on to host Jeopardy. So many wonderful memories, thanks for sharing this video with us.

I am a 45 year old die hard Leafs fan born in 77. You can do the math. Through all the torment of the 80s and early 90s we thought things would change in 93 and 94. To our wishful thinking. Then the early 2000s showed promise but once again led to the disaster of the following decade.Now once again there is hope. What will this lead to? If I could see one Stanley Cup in my life, it's one of the few things I would want before I die. If I had 3 wishes, that would be one of them. But that is where it ends. Because it is just a wish. All the greatest players find there ways to win. I hope that applies with Matthews.

Narrated by Alex Trebek, who has passed away today/8 November 2020 The opening line of text with which he is furnished here is inaccurate on two counts: • The Black Hawks (as it was written at the time) were not the defending Cup holders in 1966-67 --in point of fact, the Habs had beaten the Wings in the '66 final; and • The Hawks' most recent Cup conquest at the time had come in '61 --and it was neither their first nor only (also '34, '38)

So to finish the thought: between 1937 and 1967 (i.e., after the first expansion and the discontinuance of existing honors [sic] for a regular season "league championship" until 1986), "National Hockey League Champions" and "Stanley Cup Champions" are not of necessity synonymous in a given year (but: since 1986, has a President's Cup-winning squad ever once been referred to as ""National Hockey League Champions"? Not to my ears) Nor would it seem that the 'Hawks were called "Prince of Wales Trophy Winners" at the time, even though they in fact were -so it's a passage of time/expansion beyond O6/changing nomenclature thing, with ambiguity in the first instance; sorted

It was pretty sad to watch what Harold Ballard did to the Leafs after this unexpected win. The guy was such an arrogant, pompous ignoramus. He lied, cheated and stole his way to controlling interest in what is now the MLSE. Then he tore it apart with his pig-headed attitude and horrible mismanagement. He hired nothing but yes men, and traded his best players when they voiced their displeasure. As a Canadiens' fan, I would have loved for the intensity of their rivalry with Leafs to carry on, but it waned as the Leafs sank into oblivion through the eighties, nineties, and beyond. Sadly, the Canadiens joined them in the toilet in the late nineties. Both teams have had spotty success in the last few seasons, sparking the rivalry somewhat. I want the teams to rise to prominence again and intensify the rivalry at the top of the conference instead of the bottom.

It was in our blood, in our DNA. Davie Keon was my first 'celebrity' crush. My dad took us to our very first hockey game in '67 - Game 2 of the Stanley Cup, Toronto@Montreal. As kids, we didn't know any better and cheered when the Leafs got their first goal. I'll never forget my dad putting a gloved hand over our mouths and saying "Cheer to yourself, not out loud." The end of the "original six" era. But "original six" is a misnomer: The NHL began with four clubs in 1917, had as many as ten teams in the early 1930's, only to see there of them go out of business during the Great Depression and a fourth (the old New York Americans) suspended in 1942 due to a manpower shortage thanks to World War II (the New York Americans were supposed to return to the league after the war, but never did). The era from 1942 through 1967 should be called "The Classic Six Era".

I heard that the LA Kings, Sabres, Panthers, etc aren't going to make the playoffs this year. Since i was born in '66 i can say the Leafs have won a cup in my lifetime...though i don't remember it...I'm sure i was there cheering with my baby bottle.🤣 Blows my mind watching the old footage of not just players not wearing helmets...but goalies without masks.😱

With the Chicago Cubs winning the world series in 2016, The Leafs now join the New York Knicks among top elite teams in the Big 4 North American sports leagues still waiting for a title. Like the Knicks, the Leafs still out the entire season and have a loyal fanbase in the millions. With Mr. Mathews there is now hope for the Leafs to break the cup drought the longest (as of end of 2017 season)in the NHL.

A few things...Montreal Goalie Rogie Vachon hung with the Canadiens for a few more seasons playing on the Cup winning teams of '68 & '69 until Ken Dryden showed up in the '71 final then he was sent to the LA Kings where he played for...Bob Pulford who scored the OT winner in game 3...Goalie Terry Sawchuk was claimed by the Kings in the '67 expansion draft where he played 1 season before going back to Detroit for a year then to the Rangers where during his time there would see his life end...

To be Canadian is to love hockey. God I miss Bob Cole narrorating Hockey Night in Canada on Saturdays. And then Wednesday nights on CHCH TV 11. Winter would be blasting away in Toronto, warm wood burning fire place crackling in our home. Mom sitting on couch knitting a sock and dad nursing a Labatts stubby beer bottle. Me? Im taping my hockey stick so I can prepare to skate in the backyard Sunday morning pretending im Wendal Clark. Sighhhh the good ol days.

I’m not a Canadian, but I’ve really enjoyed (and still do) watching the NHL. I’ve really enjoyed how the NHL expanded to a growing American market especially with my hometown Florida Panthers. The 1967 Stanley Cup Finals between the Maple Leafs and the Canadiens was the last in the historic “Original Six” era before the NHL doubled its size to 12 teams, comprised of the Philadelphia Flyers, the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Los Angeles Kings, the St. Louis Blues, the Minnesota North Stars (now the Dallas Stars), and the now-defunct California Golden Seals (merged with the North Stars).

I didn't think Rogie Vachon wore number 29 during his days in Montreal. I had always thought that Ken Dryden was the first, last, and only Montreal Canadien player to ever wear that number.
@odiecalodie5 жыл бұрын
Rogie Vachon was called up from the minors in March 67. Charlie Hodge wore number 1 and Gump Worsley wore Number 30. When Charlie Hodge was picked by Oakland in the 67-68 Expansion Draft , Worsley switched to number 1 and Vachon switched to number 30.
