A lot changed at American Motors from 1962 to 1968, and one way to unravel that history is to follow the lineage of this 1968 Rebel SST convertible. Plus, it's a lot of fun to drive on a beautiful fall day...
Visit our Facebook page: / americanmotorsmovie
*Last as in the last AMC-branded convertible built in the factory. We acknowledge the AMC Eagle and Concord convertibles done by Griffith in the early 80s, as well as the Renault Alliance convertible, but neither of those meet the same criteria as the Rebel.

What a lovely way to start my day. Well done. I have a couple of 67 convertibles, an Ambo 343 buckets and console, and a Rebel SST 343 4 speed. So nice to see someone else appreciate these under appreciated cars.

I owned one of these cars. It had every conceivable option you could think of including air conditioning, bucket seats, AM FM radio and cruise control but it still had the crank up (And down) windows). Painted a beautiful gold color. It was a blast to drive. One of my biggest regrets was selling it in the early 1990s.

You write exceptionally well! You are also preaching to a receptive choir as I owned 5 AMC cars, and my Father 5 others. I would still be driving the Best car I ever owned, my 1969 AMC Ambassador SST, were it not for a 73 fat mustang running a stop sign at 50 mph. I wasn’t badly hurt, but the Ambassador was. Though “repaired” as they say it was never the same. It hD that Great 343 Typhoon 4 barrel V8. Thank You!

A mechanic who worked up the road from my house had one of these in the early '80s, same color. By the time he had a For Sale sign in the window a few years later, it was looking worse for wear and beyond my skill set. I wish I bought that car anyway since it's so rare. It had the 343, black interior and those Appliance Crosswire aluminum rims that were so typical back then. One of those "The car that got away" moments.

Hi Joe, Like all your videos, but really loved this one. You really put owning a convertible in the northeast into perspective. I to enjoy convertibles the most in late summer or early fall. During the hot months I reserve my top down driving for those cool nights. I grew up with convertibles, (I'm old LOL) and have owned several over the years. I currently have a 63 Cutlass conv, which I saved from the crusher many years ago, and a 66 Valiant conv which is supposedly one of only 400 equipped with the 273 V8. In addition I own a well preserved 61 Buick Electra 225 four dr hrdtp that is cosmetically original I have to say that I think your videos are some of the best on KZbin. You are obviously very knowledgeable, and do comprehensive research. You also have a great sense of humor. (loved the unboxing of the new vinyl top material) Would be great to meet you someday. Thanks for the quality entertainment. Pat

I was looking for a 67 Marlin but as of yesterday I am the proud owner of a pristine 65 990 convertible, two tone paint, wire wheels loaded with a/c, pb, ps, pw, power top. Now I am a proud AM owner of two fine vehicles. I was looking to sell my 57 Thunderbird for a 63 Thunderbird Roadster but the 65 - 67 Ambassador caught my eye. My younger brother a car dealer convinced me to purchase it over the T-bird.

That’s a great-looking car! Thanks to the owner for keeping it up! Rambler had a big plant in Brampton, Ontario. Then it was a Jeep plant. Then they built a brand-new plant in Bramalea (Brampton) in 198... 3 or 4 that briefly made Renaults, then AMC models, I think the Premier. Bought by Chrysler as AMC went bye-bye, still making Chargers, Challengers (Hellcat, Demon, Redeye) and Chrysler 300. Soon to go the way of GM in Oshawa we think. Enjoyed the video!

Excellent video, premise, and narration, I hate October, actually September too, while your at it, hell, August makes me a little uneasy, cause I know the end is coming, cruise nights are coming to an end, weekends are tough, leave the beach early for a cruise night, car shows, live my 73 Grand Prix, and the reason why is, it's a factory sunroof car, for us 70s guys, that meant, AC on, nice breeze with the roof open, not overkill, it's just about March as we speak, NY is still too cold, to open that roof, and with salt on the road, no way I'm driving a 46 yr old car, till nature does its job, and spring rains wash away all that might cause rust, rumor has it that mid 70s cars were starting to rust on the showroom floors, the Vega for example, I'll smell the spring rains, and know it's time again, till then I drive to my garage every weekend and start her up, it's a 455, so I park it in October w 3/4 of a tank, by spring it needs gas, a nice set of plugs, and a long ride, with the roof open, I can't enjoy it with the roof closed, it's coming

Fate and history to place AMC where it went and still is, in a category , a not-so well popularity car. A real American machine, quite well built, plenty of unique things about it. I own two Jeeps, a J10 & Wagoneer. I’ll put their classical uniqueness , character and muscle and 4X trac ability against the other three, any day! Absolutely LOVE the character the J10 & Wagoner has over any~!!! The wagoneer is the real beast, It’s like driving a very well put together Bus , tons of room, way universal generally in space, cargo, OEM roof rack, space for ppl, hauling, ease of maintenance, Tough as any, the body lines are superior to the others IMHO. I have owned chevy, fords. I like the Wagoneer over them for all those reasons. Perfect unit to take a few days , go to mountain in the snow in 4X4, tear thru the SNOW and camp In it! Sit on the tailgate in a lawn chair and enjoy the sunshine.

Manual brakes and electric wipers, I see. I'm a longtime AMC fan myself. My father was anti-power brakes. He didn't want them, plain and simple. All of our AMCs - '62 Rambler Classic wagon, '68 Ambassador and '74 Hornet - had manual brakes, although I was able to convince my father to go with front disc brakes on the Hornet.

Nice video. AMC styling was greatly improved in 1964, a little plain but not so goofy or dowdy as before. The Rebel SST equipped with bucket seats, 4 speed manual, disc brakes, and 4-bbl carb was long way from grandpa's Rambler, but it did not have the cache that the muscle cars from the Big 3 had. Same problem with the Javelin compared with the Mustang, Camaro, Barracuda, etc., nice car but lacking "something" that the other pony cars had. I think the first gen Javelin was a very attractive car, maybe you can do a video on one of those with the performance package. I enjoyed your brief review of the AMX for Motorweek. 👍

Nicely done and beautiful car. If I wasn't into Studebakers I'd be playing with AMCs. One thing about driving convertibles, my daily driver is a late model Mustang convertible, and I drive it all year round. Often if its too hot or cold I'll have the heat or AC on, and maybe the windows up, with the top down. As someone once said, "I didn't buy a convertible to drive in the shade!"

Imagine a Rambler SST that would of competed against the 90s mustang or Camaro of the 90s? I wonder if AMC carried on, would they go American route or would they kind of go the DSM route?

Hmmmm. A modern AMC would really be something special. If only...

Well the six cylinder engine got GREAT gas mileage. Around 30 miles to the gallon. But that was with leaded gas.

Love wires hanging under dashboard ? and add on Radios ? Back in the 60's AMC had little to no Dealer Network. and didn't improve with Renault. Even Harley Davidson at time owned by AMF Bowling .was on the verge of Bankrupt.. Japanese have entered .USA Market.. Lawrence Welk TV Show . Commercials were AMC.

Beautiful car with nice restoration but it's one drawback is the cheap ratty sounding exhaust system. Need to install better mufflers that have a nice deep tone that V-8's are known for.

Be nice if the quality of the car you’re discussing matched the quality of your video.
